I'm not sure when I'll get around to reviewing DW9E. I still haven't opened my copy on the Switch, but I did a video on the demo and talked about how the Switch played.
It's cool whenever I see someone this excited for a dynasty warriors game because I also grew up on this series. I got hooked from dynasty 4 and I recently went back to play empires 4 and 5. The worst thing about old games was the funny combo lock on and lack of a camera just as you stated. It felt so relatable when you mentioned that in the video. I assume that anyone who played the old games spammed the guard button to reset camera as well.
I still spam the guard button out of habit in modern Warriors games, the difference is that now I will sometimes try to move the camera on older games and nothing happens.
Yes!!! Everything you said is the same for me! Loved DW4. It was my first (then SW2 Empires) but definitely spammed the guard button. Lol😅didn’t mind it much back then

The biggest thing that I like about classic DW games is that all the characters plays DIFFERENTLY. Some of them are straight up out of the balance while others need some adjustments like wind scroll. Different power levels, different feelings. It's cool. And not to mention how hard this games can be on higher difficulties and later stages, especially if you're playing a character with short range attacks. Nowadays, it's just you're being a god that can obliterate armies in a few swings and no matter what character you're playing, it's all feels the same.
Dynasty warriors 4 was the one that got me into the warriors series so looking forward to it! be good to see you back to ur old self again also looking forward to the Clones part 2 video going up :D
My first introduction to this series was from a ps2 demo that featured the Nanman Campaign from DW3 with a 10 minute time limit was immediately on the series. Finding DW3 at my local Broadway Video I rented it for a month straight they ended up letting me keep the game. Then came DW4, Dynasty tactics 2, Romance of the 3 Kingdoms 8, and DW2.
I still enjoy this title. The best of the classic games. Steve Blum as Sun Jian was a nice surprise growing up in the 90s. Choosing stages with consequences and alternative battles. The shear amount of campaigns with hypothetical. Custom bodyguards and officers. The shear amount of items to unlock. The infamous difficult Nanman campaign.
Watching this and wishing Koei would return Dynasty Warriors to these significantly smaller scale battles. Seeing a small group of soldiers in their distinct rank and equipment run to engage you and your allies/enemies was just so much more exciting; slowly fighting to close that active "gate". Whereas post DW5 there was so much on-screen it felt generic, and as though one swing of your weapon against the drones that would stand in-front of you could net you about 50% of the kills you'd achieve by the end of any DW level from the 2nd to 5th games. Plus 4 had, for me, the last proper iteration of bodyguards... I want those back, Koei!
I love to see your passion for these games. I had a lot of fun playing DW4 as a child with my best friend. These days if I play a classic warriors game it's usually 5. For some reason playing 4 alone I die a lot lol. Good on you to be able to unlock all the extra stuff single player, you are a true warrior of the three kingdoms
I remember receiving a demo disk that had Dynasty Warriors 3 on it and the only 3 characters you could play was Zhao Yun from Shu, Zheng Ji from Wei, & Huang Gai from Wu. and it featured a singular mission to play. And that mission was, the Rain Forest mission [edit: it was called The Nanman Campaign] where is was pooring raining and you fought the Nanman Tribe lead by couple Meng Huo & Lady Zhu Rong. Also fun fact and my favorite part of the demo was riding and crushing the little minion ai with the giant elephants after taking it from the enemy Nanman Tribesman.
@@ChrisGildart ah yeah Demo Disc 33. I still have the uhh cd case-which had 500 cd sleeves in it-it was a black zip up case. I also remember the demo discs GameInformer used to give out when they did paperback magazines and not these all digital only ones. [edit: Demo Disk 33 had Dynasty Warriors 3, not Dynasty Warriors 4. That was Demo Disk 70.]
Might sound crazy, but DW4 is my favorite game of all time. The gameplay is so simple yet satisfying, sessions are very pick-up-n-play, and there is a TON of content for replayability. Might sound even crazier, but I've actually emailed Koei asking about a remastered collection, and they said there are 'no plans at this time' :( But hey, the seed has been planted :)

I played pirate version of this game A LOT in my childhood and then bought official disk version, which you showed, and still play it times to time =) DW8 best for me, but DW4 still aged well =)

I have been playing a ton of Dynasty Warriors 5 on PCSX2 and it holds up pretty great. One of my favourites in the series. Although I forgot how annoying the lack of a free camera can be at times.
Recently got my hands on this and was so happy to get it set up on my Steam Deck! Thanks for shining a spotlight on this perhaps more obscure version of DW4 :)
If Koei Tecmo EVER get to Remaster the Old DW Games, it should be based on the Xtreme Legends Version fused with the Base Game like they did in 7 on Steam, & 8 on Switch.

This was really the only of the classics to get released on PC in the west, so I imagine it would be this, unless you're thinking of Samurai Warriors 2 or Warriors Orochi 1.

The lock on function is a pain in the ass. On hardest difficulty this is suicidal thing update: I found cheat code that unlock the lock-on and now it tastes better than DW5

I've been searching for it forever as well.... I think I played it first in 2007, when my uncle Torrented or got the game from Pirate Bay back in the day.... Like you said, I can't find any English hard disc copies. And any pirate bay torrents never ever worked for me.... I'm not THAT tech savvy either, so I have no clue what I'm doing/trying.

Well, this certainly puts my 2 copies (25 rubles each, it's about one third of a dollar) into perspective) About technical stuff - yes, old games tend to run finnicky on modern systems. This was not an exeption. And yes, russian version is based on japanese pc version, which in turn is a port of an XBox version. And it was released in Russia in 2009.

I got DW4 Hyper and DW6 on PC last year for cheap (they are in Spanish, my native language). Having them is nice, but if the price gets stupid, downloading them is the way to go, they are abandonware even.
And were back!!! I remember almost bricking the family computer trying to download this and SW1 back when DWO wasnt compatible with our computer. I wonder how easy it is to mod the game?
I mean, you don't have to suffer through this Russian version, it's very easy to download an English version of the game. I personally wouldn't like to resort to that, but with the game going for as much as it is used, plus no modern method to buy it, downloading is the way to go.
Couldn't run hyper on my laptop due to compatibility. So I try Dynasty Warriors 8 Empire instead. It has better graphics, but get pretty repetitive after a few hours with the button smashing and combos. P.s how CZcams know what to recommend? It's like they knew I couldn't run hyper and here they offer me a video instead to completed me.
DW5 Special is still THE BEST imo. The introduction of Dragon Arms provide a new dimension of gameplay. On hardest difficulty perform quality Dragon Arms is needed.
Great to see that you are still doing all right even though you're feeling a bit woozy at points. Also we really do need like a dynasty Warriors remaster collection because a lot of these games no one can get anymore and even if you try to get their original versions they are expensive. I would love to replay the older games on modern hardware whether it's on console or if I can stomach it PC. But considering this is a certain company we both know that's an uphill battle because they're not like say Sega where they will gladly remaster their franchises. 9:40 - Michael's Discord has a .exe that both removes auto lock on and the delay when performing musou. Just copy it into the hyper directory and run it. Aside from the auto lock on, my only gripe with DW4 Hyper is they should've put DW4:XL's content onto it, that way it would be the definitive and best version of the game to play.
Yeah, the exe doesn't work with my Russian copy. I also agree that the XL content should have been here. But XL doesn't add that much, so I'm also cool with not having it.
I'm halfway through the video and I'm stunned by how important shadows are to you. Since when did people spend any time looking at shadows in these games? 🤷♂
Nice video. It's not that the old pc ports don't support higher resolution than you mentioned, but they only support 4:3 resolutions. You can easily get 4K resolution on hyper by just adding a custom 4:3 resolution of 4K into your nvidia settings, it will then be choosable in the game. Only problem is HUD being tiny because it gets smaller the higher the resolution- but still cool that such old games already support 4K if not more.

25 dollars for a russian copy is still quite expensive, in Russia you can find brand new sealed copies for just a couple of bucks... But yeah, it's definitely worth it nevertheless. And still much better than 69 euros lol

Are you naive? Direct2drive sold a digital copy. I bought it and can still download it today. I dont think it can come to steam. Direct2drive was bought out by gamefly. They lost the rights to download that game. I can still dl dw6 but not 4. But must be some licensing rights that prevent dw4 dw6 to go to steam as they are elsewhere. Just like romance of the three kingdoms xi. I still have it installed dw4 hyper on laptop, a pc and back up drive.

Tho there is chinese pirate server where you can still play but it doesnt have DW9 weapons and many stuff like DLC weapons joke weapons gear and weapon buffs that JP server had

I've seen people mod it. I haven't tried because I'm not really good at it. Most I've does is use dgVoodoo for the dynamic shadows.

I've been playing all the version of dynasty warriors 4, 5 & 6 using free Ps2 mobile emulators and it's still holds up really well!

Also we really do need like a dynasty Warriors remaster collection because a lot of these games no one can get anymore and even if you try to get their original versions they are expensive. I would love to replay the older games on modern hardware whether it's on console or if I can stomach it PC. But considering this is a certain company we both know that's an uphill battle because they're not like say Sega where they will gladly remaster their franchises. To my knowledge, the publishing rights for some of the classics are up in the air for Europe, which is a large part of the Western market.

9:40 - Michael's Discord has a .exe that both removes auto lock on and the delay when performing musou. Just copy it into the hyper directory and run it.
Aside from the auto lock on, my only gripe with DW4 Hyper is they should've put DW4:XL's content onto it, that way it would be the definitive and best version of the game to play.
Yeah, the exe doesn't work with my Russian copy. I also agree that the XL content should have been here. But XL doesn't add that much, so I'm also cool with not having it.

Nice video. It's not that the old pc ports don't support higher resolution than you mentioned, but they only support 4:3 resolutions. You can easily get 4K resolution on hyper by just adding a custom 4:3 resolution of 4K into your nvidia settings, it will then be choosable in the game. Only problem is HUD being tiny because it gets smaller the higher the resolution- but still cool that such old games already support 4K if not more.
European copies of DW4 Hyper also go for pretty cheap if you every want to pick up an English text version.
I've been keeping an eye out, but the European versions I've been seeing have all been pretty pricey.

The game does allow keyboard mapping. There are no mouse controls.

25 dollars for a russian copy is still quite expensive, in Russia you can find brand new sealed copies for just a couple of bucks... But yeah, it's definitely worth it nevertheless. And still much better than 69 euros lol

Are you naive? Direct2drive sold a digital copy. I bought it and can still download it today.
I dont think it can come to steam. Direct2drive was bought out by gamefly. They lost the rights to download that game. I can still dl dw6 but not 4. But must be some licensing rights that prevent dw4 dw6 to go to steam as they are elsewhere. Just like romance of the three kingdoms xi. I still have it installed dw4 hyper on laptop, a pc and back up drive.
