I like to think that William sees Mike as actually his mini him and sees him as the most useful among his other kids. Like he was a bully and murderer and his son is one too. His entire life nearly being reflected by his first born, I also think he wants to manipulate Mike. But some part of me thinks that William actually did love him because he was his first child and he and his wife had to love each other at some point that they decided to have kids or even marry as well, so I headcanon that the disagreements began only after a few years after Mike was born. So he might’ve not shown any love to Evan and Liz when they were born those times, unlike Mike.
