    As some others have mentioned, outside of the raw food diet and the some of the treats (bones types such as the antler), I really enjoy your videos. I’m a licensed veterinary nurse who has primarily worked ER and critical care; as such, have seen a lot of pets hospitalized for malnutrition with the raw food diets. Most veterinarians don’t recommend raw food diets. Moreover, I’ve seen a lot of the bone type treats get caught either in their throats or on the roof of their mouths so not a safe treat regardless of whether your watching them. I’ve been a veterinary nurse for over a decade so I have experience with these items. However, your training videos are great.

    There is a trick I inadvertently (my dog isn’t very food motivated and he’s old so I wasn’t looking to train him) taught my dog. When we got him we started putting his toys in a toy basket, and he would go and get a toy from there whenever he wanted one. What was funny, was that he watched me put his toys back so many times, that if you tell him to put his toy back he will. He will walk over too his basket and place the toy in front of the basket. (He’s small and the basket is kinda high up so he has to sit on his hind paws to reach it) it’s so cute watching him trying to please me when I ask 😂

    Top Puppy Essentials: 1. Insomnia and Endless Caffeine 2. Towels, Paper Towels (Tons of them!) 3. Enzyme Pet Pee Cleaner (Yep, gonna need it). 4. Exercise Pen!!!! A Nice Safe TALL Pen ( it's bigger than a standard crate - I rec' having both) 5. A Zillion Safe to Chew Objects ....Its gonna be endless chewing. *Earth Animal No Hide Chews* have been a safe option in my experience (Must still supervise!!!! Everything is still a choking hazard). *Nylabone* has several options for puppies. The SmartPet Love Snuggle Puppy is wonderful to have for your puppy to chew on, and keep as a sleep pillow 6. a ton of Band Aids and Neosporin for YOU (Puppies have razor sharp *fangs*) 7. Hopefully you are on vacation or have a simulated robot that takes over your job from that 8 - 12 week period. It gets much better after that 12 week mark. Before that, you might be a zombie. 8. Pet babysitters are great (Borrow your family here) so you can get other things done, and trade off supervising the pup! Seriously!
    Okay really, this Puppy Essential should be said, lol. Don't get a dang puppy! SKIP IT! If you have the chance, get an adult dog. It's a helluva lot easier, and you will be happier. *SERIOUS* * SERIOUS* *SERIOUS* I don't know why people want puppies, except that they're blissfully ignorant of ever having had a puppy. Honestly, I look forward to that 6 month mark. The first several months are a pain, and a lot of work. It's just that you're loving that puppy cuteness to the point that you're forgiving the fact that the first several months isn't really that much fun, lol. I mean it's not fun. You're trying to keep up with a puppy that pees every hour, all the while trying to avoid parvo, and getting chewed on. Its not fun. Get an adult dog as a first choice. They adjust faster, and often appreciate you more.
    Oh, those pee pads are not good for chew crazy puppies. Don't bother buying them. Your puppy will shred them.
    One extra fun Puppy Essential: *Kong Brand Stuff N' Easy Treat * - Puppy Version Cheese Flavor (They luv it, and you don't need a Kong chew to use this stuff, but it's nice if you do have a Kong for your puppy's endless chewing)
    Last (useful) Puppy Essential: *Plastic Electrical Cord Covers* -- Yes, hide those electrical cords!!!! Look up cord covers.
    Final (useful) Puppy Essential: *Bitter Apple Spray* -- Spray this stuff on all electrical cords. Corners of fabric furniture. All sorts of things your puppy is going to chew! Spray those objects you don't want chewed up with this bitter apple.
    *Yessss on the Pet Insurance!* Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye! Puppies honestly try to kill themselves through curious chewing. They will put EVERYTHING in their mouth. It's insane. Trupanion pays your vet directly. They're likely less fuss, but I have to say I've not had to use them yet. Great for the accident that could cost several thousand bucks. But aim to do your best NOT to use your insurance, lol. That's the point. It's insurance. You don't want to have to use it.
    Sign up for puppy socialization classes with a reputable trainer or canine training class. This way, the puppies in the class have likely all had their vaccines, since most trainers are going to require proof.
    Keep your puppy ULTRA QUARANTINED at least until the first two series of vaccines are done for Distemper, Adenovirus (Hepatitis) Parvo, Parainfluenza. Best to have these vax done by an actual vet, not yourself, or a friend or anyone that says they can do them for you. Just no! No puppy class will accept vaccines not done by a vet. You will want the Bordatella vax. too. But the biggie you're aiming to avoid is Parvo. This means that as the first two series of vax. are kicking in, you really should keep your pup away from other unknown dogs you don't know are vaccinated. Don't let pup get around free roaming dogs at all. *Carry* your puppy in and out of the vet clinic when you go. *Carry* your pup everywhere while waiting those first two sets of shots in the series of three. I mean, if you're traveling by car, don't even stop at rest areas. Avoid places other dogs have been. Basically you'll be quarantined with the pup at home for that first couple weeks to avoid Parvo. Maybe that's a bit diligent, but that's how I do things.
    Last but not least, get your pup a toothbrusth and pet toothpaste (Nylabone makes toothpaste for dogs), and get your pup used to this routine so you can brush your dog's teeth daily for life. It makes a huge difference to their health. Now is the time to do it, even while that pup has the razor teeth. It's to get the pup used to this routine. Right now that pup is a mind sponge and needs to get pleasant happy experiences to plenty of different things. It's a lot to do!

    • @frostellebuilds9085
      @frostellebuilds9085 Před 3 lety +1

      Biters spray isn't the best option cause dogs have different taste buds from humans and it can attract them it's better to puppy-proof your house plus if it attracts them and it have alcohol, it's best to use it with contain. When vaccinating it's best to give the core vaccines then titer test cause sometimes it can do more harm then good. And when buying treats for dogs in training it's best to use natural treats and smaller ones (training treats) since you're going to use a lot of them. And be careful when feeding dogs human food like milk, goats milk is better tolerated then cows milk! Also consult your holistic vet before doing anything! @@frostellebuilds9085 You've mentioned even better tips! Thanks. True about puppy proofing, that's why I mentioned electrical cord covers. I still swear by Grannick's Bitter Apple Spray as a chew deterrent. It has worked in my case, and it's readily available. After having dogs for nearly 20 years that have all lived high quality lives that were for the most part cancer free (arthritis was the issue that was tough to manage with my large breed dogs over age 15) I've come to the conclusion that a good middle ground is relatively effective rather than being a strict organic everything anti-vax type (but, I entirely agree with not over doing vaccinations, and using vaccinations based on a dog's risk to pathogen exposure). Personally, I never want to see a rabies case so, I'm all in favor of vaccines over the dreaded diseases that are out there but states requiring a rabies vax on an annual basis is a bit much. The vaccines are viable for at least 3 yrs or more. I highly rec' the leptospirosis and canine influenza vaccines. Anyways, your advice is absolutely excellent and entirely top notch.
      It's funny, I can't eat dairy, lol, but having a pup try it in small amounts is probably harmless. I don't have dogs that have any intestinal sensitivities. However, yes, I've heard the same thing you say about goat's milk. True! It's a better option. That Kong cheese stuff in a bottle is practically junk processed food, lol. But, oh my with a puppy many people are just trying to survive the first four to five months. The chewing can be unrelenting, and keeping that pup occupied can be a challenge . Kong products are likely available in any local pet supply store. I'm going to say that over a lifetime, using this Kong treat stuff for a short time in small amounts is likely harmless, but if someone can source an even better cleaner option, go for it, exactly like you suggest.
      I do have a holistic vet but I take their advice with a grain of salt (some are selling you placebo supplements with a higher price tag that don't have any real proof of results), in addition to consulting with trusted traditional vets. In my case, my main vet consults with a holistic vet that she sends clients in on referral. Im lucky to have a nice vet school nearby if need be.

    • @Starry_Night_Sky7455
      @Starry_Night_Sky7455 Před 3 lety +2

      Don't use the grass that's in the airport they've designated for dogs that are coming through the airport. Absolutely *NOT* !!! That's a parvo risk. Your pup is going to have to pee someplace where other dogs have NOT been. I suppose you could carry those pee pads. You also know to get the soft carrier. Hmmm, I do hope this pup is going WITH you the ENTIRE way, and never in cargo. You'll need a health certificate. Pups typically can't fly unless 8 weeks or older. Check with your airline regarding health certificates required. Have the microchip information up to date so it's all set, just in case! Usually, puppies that young will honestly sleep most of flight. Hope it's a short and very direct flight. Expect a lot of attention, lol. I mean it's a puppy. People are going to gravitate to your puppy, lol.

    Ok! Love this video!! But I need help ASAP! We ar picking our puppy up on Christmas Eve. Yay!! But here’s my dilemma, we are picking out of 6 puppies. Can you give me pointers on picking out the best pup of the litter? We want a more mellow but playful puppy. My boys 7 & 5 have autism and an 18 month old baby girl... so we have enough energy our house lol! Our family just functions a little differently and I feel a lot of pressure to pick the “perfect” puppy. Any tips?

    • @anariveros5438
      @anariveros5438 Před 3 lety +1

      I learned this in a book, so the author wanted to pick the calmest and controlled dog of the group, not the pick of the litter, so he set up some chairs, and the pick of the litter went off first, to explore. another one of their sisters went off fairly quickly after, but the one they eventually got was the last one off of the chairs (this is cesar millan btw) based on the energy level you want, that might help to choose which dog you want.

      @Starry_Night_Sky7455 Před 3 lety

      You ask the breeder for help.
      You pick the litter first based on traits you seek by having done your research on the parents qualities, then pick the pup based on preferences. Some of us just fall for the pup we like, like magic, and that's it. Really, I know too many top field trial trainers that have done this for YEARS. It's an art. In your case, you need a very tolerant temperament since small kids (yikes!) are involved here. Really, the pup is going to need to be confined away from such small kids on occasion, and supervised, all the while the kids must be guided on how to behave with this pup that will have razor sharp teeth for quite some time until the pup's adult teeth finally come in. It's never the dog's fault if kids get bit. It's the adult's fault. Just being up front because it surprises my how many people don't realize this.
      There's no "perfect" puppy. Every puppy requires a lot of work with training. Your breeder should be your guidance here. That's what a reputable breeder does. They're your guide for the lifetime of your pup.
      Understanding temperament testing can give you some idea of how to nitpick over each pup's behavior to try to select for a more mellow pup.
      This is a good evaluation page to assess temperament. landofpuregold.com/puptest.htm
      Here's a little snippet of info on the same topic. It's about assessing temperament in puppies. Should help you out.
