- Though Wave Hill's Conservatory is currently closed to the public, we were able to do a socially-distanced, mask-wearing tour for all of you viewers. I hadn't been to their conservatory for quite some time, but I was happy to see it was much how I remembered it-and maybe even slightly more organized!
This Field Trip is powered by one of my new partner-sponsors on the channel-Wildling, which is an eco-conscious shoe brand based out of Europe. You can find them here: bit.ly/3ih410W. Additionally, they are offering the code WILDLING21 for free international delivery for new customers (1 use per customer, min. purchase €50, valid until Jan. 31, 2021). When ordering abroad, first return is free. And they have a winter sale up until today Jan. 24, 2021. So take advantage of that!
Special thanks to all the Wave Hill crew and gardening staff for opening this up for us. Especially Jess Brey for helping organize. More information at: www.wavehill.org

WOW what a FANTASTIC Succulent Greenhouse tour at Wave Hill, so many really beautiful and many different types of succulents, thank you so much Summer for sharing your wonderful visit and taking us all along with you XXXX
My greatest pleasure
Spot on regarding the root Mealy bugs. Even if you grow them in habitat here in South Africa, it is the main problem. The only way I notice is if I know a succulent should wake up and grow and I see no new growth. Either for winter or summer growers. If they don't start growing, I check the roots and repot. If the succulent looks dehydrated for a long period (it should plump up within 24-48h after watering) it could be root Mealy. If the plant was recently repotted or has sensitive roots I would flush the pot with water and surfactant (e.g. soapy water). This will remove a good portion of Mealy as well as bacteria (but few succulents require a specific bacterial microbiome for continued growth and bacteria can be added back in after the root Mealy bugs have been dealt with).
It works on Gasteria, Haworthia, Crassula, Aloe, Asclepiads etc. so I adopted it as a nice management plan for potted succulents.
Thanks for your sage tips. Even above ground mealies look as of the plant is dehydrated. Good recommendations to folks to look for them both above and below ground!
Summer, I love your humbleness when that employee complimented you “sounds like you know your plants”. You don’t claim to be “an expert” and recognize that you are still learning and discovering things about the plant world along with your viewers. Thank you for you dedication and great educational content! 💙
It feels like I'm walking through the greenhouse with a friend. Thank you for being informative and introducing new plants to me!
OH MY GOD SO TRUE
Sometimes I want to look at the plants but can't help but get distracted by Summer's awesome outfits, always!
I still struggle with succulents, still learning. Love the moonstones. I think the only reason my moonstone is alive is because I ignore it. Great video.
Regarding the resilience of Kalanchoe plants: my mother's neighbor had about 10 or more kalanchoe delagoensis plants. We live in Houston, TX and unfortunately most of them died after the weird winter storm in February that blacked out most of Texas.
Luckily, a couple of them managed to make a comeback! I found a fallen bud from one of them on the ground and my mother's neighbor let me keep it. I went and visited my mom and set my little bud on the table and the next thing I know, she set a large serving dish on top of it and squashed most of its little leaves!
I planted it in a tiny nursery pot immediately when I got back home and she is now thriving and has grown so much! I honestly thought she wouldn't make it after getting crushed.
Kalanchoe are tough as nails. 💪
I love when you involve the gardeners to the vídeo, Big hug from México
Hi edagdwg God is always around enjoy seeing so many new plants thanks for sharing a forever fan Linda j. Peace
I dunno how many times I've watched your wavehill tours but everytime I just feel comforted.
Loved hearing from Mr. Singh!!
Wow, super interesting and so many gorgeous succulents to see. What a nice guy the curator is, and I really appreciate the mealy bug tip for looking into the roots and changing out the soil every so often. Just the other day I noticed my Crassula Ovata has mealybugs. Hate them!
I begun my succulent collecting just last year and its very addicting🤣. Whats interest me is how each one of them grow differently. Propagation is also more fun. Seeing them grow and get mature till their flowering stage is totally rewarding. Love the tours. Another great video👍
I love the whimsicalness of succulents. There is so much variety of forms that there is something for everyone. Thanks for this content.
You are like a plant god,you know so much about them.watching from Zambia central Africa.
As always,,, love love & love- sharing your love for plants through endless exploring,, makes me excited to grow my collection!!

Divine sunlight. Very relaxing video! Stay safe, Summer! ☀️
MORE FIELD TRIPS PLEASE, Summer Rayne!!!!! We wouldn't be sanely making it through this pandemic without your soothing botanical knowledge and guidance :D
Hello Summer, very interesting tour of "plantes grasses" , I have some echeverias agavoide miranda which are prompt to rot but beautiful nonetheless when they behave... Thanks, I always appreciate your tours, they are the best.
Thank you for the new video this was super helpful! My succulents will be lively now
Wave Hill is a great garden. Thanks for the greenhouse tour
Looks like a candy shop!
So colorful ❤️
Love the field trips
Hi i really love following you in this kind of video as we can’t visit tropical gardens cause the pandemic!! So thanks.
Ahhhh, my stomping grounds. I grew up In Kingsbridge and went to school in Riverdale. I would always go to Wave Hill after school ( I would sneak in. This was a long time ago. Shhhhh.)
I loved walking the trails, checking out the greenhouses, and sneaking out to the train tracks by the Hudson River. I know this sounds cliche but it felt very magical to me. It was harder for me to go to the Botanical Gardens on a daily basis, so Wave Hill was my spot. Loved that you ventured out to the Bronx and included Wave Hill in your episode.
Wow its such a stunning green house full of so many kinds and species of succulents it's just so amazing ✨✨✨😍
Really a mask in a greenhouse with such purified air
great more field trips.
Beautiful....
Yes, I would like to see more videos like this.
Sedums and Huernias are my favorites ❤️
I finally identified a plant I have because you pointed it out. Thank you! I love Wave Hill but haven't been there since I got the plant. I crave visiting there, NYBG and all the other "wild" places in the city and Westchester. Trying to hang in there! You're vids help!
Thanks Summer I needed that!
Wow! Again u shared such a beautiful video (as always) on succulents . I like to collect succulents , I stay in Mumbai India, climate here is not suitable for them...but still i collect and try to grow and observe their growth..
Thanks to the care taker gardener for showing the bugs with so much of interest...
Like your coat...
And lots of love to you!
Love your field trips! More please. 🌿🙂

Hi, I really enjoyed this video ! Thank you 😊
Hi Summer Rayne, I've been watching your vlogs since a month or two ago and I already watched more of your video. I was inspired by you, now I'm a plantaholic. ❤️ Love from the Philippines
Welcome to the plant world!!!
Really enjoyed watching your vidio.
Have a good time!
I love how she loves all plants common or rare, Big or small. It doesnt matter to her.
wow! even though I'm moving way more into foliage type plants, succulents are still unmatched with their incredible diversity (edit) as soon as I saw the dyckia I immediately thought of chanin. rest in peace💕
lol, he introduced brand new bug, and didn't tell us how he's getting rid of them :D
I've had to deal with them for a while now. So far I've only found them in my succulents. You'll notice that the plant will stop growing and basically stay the same size for a long time. Also the lower leaves wilt off and die rapidly.
When you uproot the plant, you'll see that the roots are covered in a white fluff. Also the mealy bugs are usually clustered around the roots which are just below the soil and not too deep. You can wash the roots thoroughly with water, then dunk em in a solution of soap water and neem oil for 15 mins and plant them into fresh soil.
I would think releasing some predatory mites (stratiolaelaps scimitus) upon them should work. They will establish themselves in the soil and eat the eggs and larvae of various insects... worked for my fungus gnat infestation!
wow i really love your tours!!!!
Glad you are enjoying!
i quite like the ruellia makoyana at the start
I love your field trip videos and would love to see more :)
Very good. Thanks for letting me know!
Hi Summer- love your field trips -keep’em comin’. Oh, and by the way, in almost every video, you say “ is that a jungle boogie”? It’s just something that I’ve noticed, and giggle when you say it!
Garfield Park Conservatory in Illinois is definitely worth a trip! & The Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco! Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Lakeside, VA🤯 Then there’s Longwood Gardens here in PA that I’ve seen maybe one time too many 😅 My husband always finds out where the closest conservatories are whenever we’re on road trips (even though he is tired of them) to help keep it exciting for me 🥰
Best video ❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Awesome video! I would love to see you do more Interviews :)
Wonderful tour! Loved the shots of your amazing shoes too! Will go check them out on their website...
I actually just bought my cameraman a pair because I thought he’d like them!
@@summerrayneoakes fantastic
Waoow sangat bagus sekali...,
So interesting ... I m Indonesian
Your ad worked... just HAD to buy some Wildling shoes!
I am fairly new for your channel and am really amazed by the quality of the video and insane amount of the information that’s given! I think this is the best plant channel I’ve come across and my new favourite! Just curious where you are from, because you don’t seem to have a European accent?
I miss going to our local conservatory so much
Summer Rayne, you know you're our Queen, but I really loved having Mr. Singh as your guest star today. I only wish he had been mic-ed. He was dropping some great information and I only caught bits of it. Can we have another field trip with him in the future, please?
