  • There are a lot of new people who are finding out about Evercade. I wanted to make a video explaining what the fascination is with this platform and these games. Is Evercade worth it? Who is Evercade for? I will do my best to answer that in this video.

    As someone new to the system, I have purchased nine cartridges within a few weeks. I found I was too eager to play them all and now i have a couple dozen of games started.
    Reigned it in and now I am completing games on one cartridge before moving onto the next, (ploughing through Alwas Awakening now).
    When I was a kid I only had two or three new games a year, NES and SNES cartridges weren't cheap! So I played those till they were mastered.
    This system is a breath of fresh air (and a trip down memory lane for a middle-aged gamer such as myself).

      It’s really easy to get caught up in the early stages of getting the games. Yeah I didn’t have that many games myself when I was a kid. We live a really wonderful time with how much access we have to video games with so many great options. It really is a breath of fresh air.

    I’ve just just bought a super pocket taito edition, and I had no idea about evercade and the evercede EXP Handheld, or any of the other gameing systems, and there are cartridges to buy to put into your super pocket. I thought all the games were already built in. I have been watching a lot of videos on CZcams to try and figure it all out, and you have explained it really well to me, Thanks a lot 😂😍👍

    Great video pal, I love when you do an in depth dive on Evercade, to be honest I've never yet been disappointed with Blaze, in fact the old gaming giants have lost me for good (Nintendo, Sega, Sony and Microsoft), I recently bought a Steam Deck, it's good for what it is and offers a certain freedom and I love it, but I will always be a dyed in the dung, old school physical game collector, it's what I prefer, I prefer to have something tangible, besides Evercade's not just for us (i.e. Gen X gamers like you all the way to early Millennials like me who loved the 8-16 bit era games), but it's also for the younger generations who never knew about these games or this era and are discoverin' it for the first time and love it cause of it's simplicity and fun.

    There is one collection that's considered unplayable by many, myself included and that's the Atari Arcade 1.
    Almost every title on there requires analogue control to play even enjoyably.
    Warlords pong nightdriver superbreakout need the spinner/dial to even work, and theres also the trackball games like millipede and crystal castles, and the evercade doesnt support any of my trackball or spinners made by GRS. The choice to even produce this cart is baffling to say the least, but hey I own a copy so I guess I'm the idiot.

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah, it’s one of those game collections that the primary reason I even own it is because it came in a bundle of three. I definitely can’t say that I’ve played much of it because I own two Atari 2600s , and I just got the 2600+ recently . I showed a few screen caps in this video about times I’ve talked about the legacy collections. In one of those videos I talk about the Atari Legacy games announcement. My opinion is that most people should maybe go for the Lynx games since some of those games aren’t on the Atari 50 collection , but everything else I would not recommend because those games can be found so many other places, including on the original systems for pretty cheap. I really need to make some type of Atari 2600 buyers guide video for my channel.

    Been tempted by an Evercade for a while now. Which would you recommend exp or vs? I know they both play the same games, hand held & tv etc just wondered which would you’d say is a good option to dip into?

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  Před 6 měsíci +1

      If you are just looking to dip into it , like handheld gaming , and want to spend the least money I would recommend the Hyper Mega Tech Super Pocket ( the Taito or Capcom version) which plays Evercade carts. If you want a console I recommend the VS ( wait for a sale, I’ve seen them go as low as $89 on Amazon and other places). If you get the VS don’t get the Namco collections they won’t play on the VS ( it’s a licensing issue and they are out of print now but still available in some places ).

    "Get off my lawn" lol at that very moment when holding the gun you reminded me of the blind guy you meet early on in the 1st Borderlands game! 😎
    Something that goes back to the good old days of gaming is the main reason to have an Evercade, along with hdmi as some classics have yet to receive the hdmi treatment officially! So yeah, I don't mind buying games I already own but on that same cart there might be another game you never did own or always wanted to play but never got around to it. Plus the arcade machine stuff which was never part of Evercade in the early days is an added bonus! Arcade ROMs in the palm of your hand?!?! Yes please!!
    And the fact we are supporting Devs, and this feels more personal in our support than you get from a cold hearted download on a modern day console!
    Plus, as the new releases are spread out it actually gives you something to look forward too just like the good old days. 3 months wait felt like a year back in the 1990's lol, so in a small way it helps slow time down and gives you something to think about and look forward to.

      Ha! PK meet TK! 😎👍
      If you don't mind first person shooters the 1st Borderlands game is a classic, and the perfect Co-op for you and your son when he's older, say 12 years old or older type thing... It has a rouge-light feature to the guns, from around 12 types of weapons they have made many 1000's of guns so weapon drops are random and can be sold to vendor machines to buy better ect. Keeps your brain thinking as you play and you can go at your own pace.
      Note that the physical Switch version is just a download, the cart works as a license to play the download once it's downloaded. It's cheap on Switch as a download in the sales any way. Other versions available of course including the xbox360 one which is also great and the one I originally played. I never got on with the 2nd game but the 1st is superb!

  • @Orpheusftw
    @Orpheusftw Před 6 měsíci +1

    Hm, good tip on video games plus. I'm in Canada, and each cart there is at least 5 dollars cheaper than amazon (before figuring out shipping.)
    I'm fairly recent to Evercade, and unfortunately have pretty much bought all the carts I'm currently interested in, but if I had done it at VGP I might have saved a significant amount of money.

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  Před 6 měsíci

      I used to get Evercade games from Amazon too . What was really frustrating around here was that I would pre-order a game and not get it the day of or even close to the day of. They would be like it’s delayed and you won’t get it for like 10 days later. I’ve had times where VGP would send me the game a day early. Well, if some new cartridges peak your interest, at least you’ll know a more affordable place to go.

    I only got an EXP for Christmas. Been following it since it origianlly came out. Ive already bought 11 carts. Mainly the legacy ones as i hope to get a full collection and felt it better to get thrm before prices get too high. Technos collection 1 cost me £68. Rest all retail price. Yes there are some carts I'll probably not play or games im not interestes in but i have the bug. If they hadnt numbered them i might not feel the need to collect thrm all.

    • @SteveODonnell
      @SteveODonnell Před 6 měsíci +1

      @PKInTheUniverse it's a good marketing trick I'll grant them that. My OCD kicks in when I see 1,3,5,6,10 and so on. There certainly are a lot of good classics dotted around the carts and many I remember from growing up. I'd rather get some of the newer ones and the arcade collection first but now with Atari, Namco and others going Legacy I feel I should stick to the older ones first incase they are next. May even get a Vs at some point too.

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  Před 6 měsíci +1

      @SteveODonnell as a proof of concept I printed off some inserts on nice brochure paper of the games without the numbers . The biggest struggle was getting the colors to look right . I wish they would go the limited run route and just start putting the numbers on the back. I always recommend the lynx collections because those really aren’t available a lot of places. Everything else is pretty much available on wide variety of other systems. The one downside to the Namco collections is they don’t play on the VS , and they are the only collections like that because of the licensing.

    • @SteveODonnell
      @SteveODonnell Před 6 měsíci +1

      @PKInTheUniverse the Lynx collections are already going up fast in price and there seems to be hardly any on ebay at the moment. I'm gutted I couldn't pick them up last week when they were still in stock at funstock.

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  Před 6 měsíci +1

      @SteveODonnell that sucks man . I noticed VGP doesn’t have them either. I really wish Blaze would stop announcing when a collection becomes legacy. It’s a catch 22. On one hand, I see where they’re coming from and wanting people to know that they have a limited time to get these collections . But the downside is because people know, there’s a scarcity mindset and you got people who are on the fence about going for a complete set buying these up . There’s no right answer in it all I guess.

    I love Evercade, but i have also witnessed first hand, how janky this system can be. All sorts of hardware and software issues. Cartridges failing, games crashing, consoles refusing to boot, bent PCBs in cartridges... If they want to grow, Blaze needs to ramp up its quality control signifanctly. It would be a shame if such a great system failed due to petty bugs.

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  Před 6 měsíci

      Of course Evercade is janky , this stuff is very cheaply made. I feel like I’ve seen significant quality control upgrades in 2023 compared to 2022 and I hope we see more in 2024. But then again, I don’t buy every single cartridge nor will I so my experience may vary compared to others. I wouldn’t call it a great system at all. It’s a system that contains a lot of great underappreciated games from my perspective. I really wish Blaze had a direct competitor who is following the same business model, and was making a system that was maybe a little more expensive but a of higher quality. Competition always increases quality.

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  Před 6 měsíci

      Well, I backed it on Kickstarter before I even played it because I’m friendly with the creators. When you get anything on Kickstarter, you’re taking a gamble. I got the game before I even knew it was even coming to Evercade. I did not buy Indie Heroes 2 for the one game on there I already own. Nothing really holds its value when it comes to video games especially newer stuff. $50 is nothing in the grand scheme of gaming. I don’t have to justify any purchase I make , I flat out will tell people it’s better to get it on Evercade ( which has save states). I said I paid $50 for it , I never said I thought it was worth $50. If I thought it was, it would be strange to recommend people get it on Evercade. Heck if you want to you can just buy it on Steam for $5 which is also a great option.

    • @BanditsBest686
      @BanditsBest686 Před 6 měsíci +1

      yeah indy devs got it rough they cant get top dollar to recoup efforts/costs/work into a game, at same time I always get confused when people make price comparisons to stuff back in the day, whether entertainment value or inflation comparisons. You said mario for $50 back then and this indy game for $50. Dont feel it adds up the same way.
      Maybe thats where and has been argued digital is great for indy devs, they can get their game out there and cheap, where as they cant compete putting out a indy game on physical all the time, hence where limited run comes in etc but I dont support those places@@PKInTheUniverse

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah, games are cheaper than they’ve ever been. $50 in 1986 is like $144 in today’s money. And back in the day. Of course the work was a lot harder because of the technology and they had a whole team working on that stuff. I’m glad technology has advanced the way it has to give more people an opportunity to realize their dreams.
