Radiation for Throat Cancer

  • In 2011 I went through treatment for stage IV throat cancer. It was in my left tonsil. It is a curable cancer but the treatment is brutal and the side effects can be life changing and permanent. I post this video so that those facing this treatment and their friends and family will know what one session of radiation is like. I went through 33 rounds of radiation and 3 rounds of chemo (Cisplatin). In this video the you see the first part where I am placed on the table (my feeding tube visible under my shirt) and the radiation mask snapped down. The techs leave the room and the next part is the daily x-ray to check my position and the alignment of the machine. At 7:38 the actual delivery of radiation begins with two arcs encompassing my neck. At 11:33 the machine stops in front of my face, directing a concentrated beam directly at the tumor through my mouth. Have questions about what to expect? Contact me through the comments and I'll be glad to tell you about my experience and survival. BTW I am also an RN.

46 years old & just started treatment for voice box cancer. 7 sessions in with 28 more to go. So far so good. No real pain to treat ( yet ) Mom’s still making me grill cheese sandwiches & I’m swallowing fine. Just have to keep properly hydrated & use the solutions & mouth rinse Dr gives me. No sunburn yet, no mouth sores, phlegm is fine, airway 100%. All I’m lacking really is a good night sleep. Probably stress. No dramatic drop in weight as I still have a good appetite. Couple light THC/CBD gummies for that😉🇨🇦. I realize it’s still early with more to come but I’m happy that my sense of well-being is staying intact. You can’t run & hide from this shit so ya just gotta be strong & fight it! I also now realize that many who go through this experience vary differently from one another. I don’t smoke tobacco, don’t drink alcohol or soda pop.
Just want to say to anyone who is scared of this treatment, that you’re tougher than you think❤All the best to you!

Can't swallow food on liquid diet. Had my third PET scan completely clear. 50% chance of recurring the first and the second year after treatment. I hit the two year milestone a while back. For the first time I'm having to cancel my appointments for the rest of the week so my neck can possibly heal up a little. I'm also going through chemotherapy and it's certainly a miserable life for me right now, I can no longer taste or swallow any food and I'm trying to deal with a feeding tube, but that stuff is making me very sick due to the chemo I guess. I'm right now half way through my treatments and I've lost close to thirty pounds due to being sick from the chemo and the radiation damage to my throat.

Don't let them fool you into think they're a harmless machines along with the good that they provide. I've currently just passed the middle mark of under going 35 scheduled treatments. I'm also now canceling my radiation appointments for this week due my neck being so radiation burned and blistered that I can't even wear a shirt. I get my treatments every day and my shirt sticks to my skins then dries and rips off the wet blistered skin. I just received a prescription cream and it's helping a little, but there is no way I can allow this condition to get any worse without taking a week off to allow it heal. They want me to continue with my treatments but there is absolutely no way. If I did, I really believe it would literally burn me so bad that it would scar me for life. I'm already fearing permanent scaring from the serious blistered burns that I already have. I can't imagine how it will look and feel after fifteen teen more treatments? My neck on both sides already looks like it was deliberately burned with a propane torch and is so painful it's unbearable. I'm also getting chemotherapy that make be very sick with vomiting. And you can trust that the inside of my throat is burned worse than the outside, and when I get sick it feels like my head is being ripped off. I'm also in power chair due to a serious spinal injury that has caused me nineteen spinal surgeries, and at times I believe these cancer treatment are worse. I've never went through so much pain and discomfort in my life, so you can trust that I have grown to hate these machines!

I had the same treatment for cancer of both tonsils, 30 sessions of radiotherapy and two doses of Cisplatin back in 2019 . The treatment really is quite brutal , especially after the 4 week mark . The burning caused by the radiation makes eating nearly impossible so yes I had an NG tube as well for months after end of treatment . It is now coming up the 5 year all clear and still have many of the side effects though slowly getting mostly back to what used to be normal . To be honest even though I was put on the same machine as the one in this video I had absolutely no idea what it was actually doing as I was always strapped to the table under the mask and at end of cycle they would always unpin the mask and tell me not to jump off the table as it was still raised , and every day for every treatment I would tell them not to worry , that I didn't think they lowered the ceiling . Twice I was admitted to the cancer ward for an extended stay and the trip to the radiotherapy was always utmost priority , same during the all day chemo infusion where they simply held off hooking up the Cisplatin infusion until I returned from radiotherapy as it was too poisonous to be pushing through the crowded hospital corridors .

I had 35 treatments of radiation. Totally painless. However, after the radiation was over, the wounds began to heal and that made eating and drinking difficult. Luckily I had no chemotherapy. My dentist recommended I put on 10lbs. ASAP because of the difficulty in eating. Also, note that radiation destroys bone marrow.

Doug, I have been diagnosed early july after removal of R tonsil with 32mm growth that was malignant. A week ago, I had PET scan that was clear of showing any evidence of cancer cells . I declined the radiation treatment based upon what my research had shown me and the fact that dentist wnated to remove several teeth for which I have no problems with currently. I watched my father go thru years of therapy for cancer and then die. If this is site specific treatment and there are no evident cell showing- then what would they target and what would be the benefit of going thru all this hardship and likely permanent damage?

I had my first treatment with a mask and it freaked me out and I didn't go through with until monday when i go back for another try. They prescribed me attivan but I am very nervous and scared to wear that tight mask that they lock onto the gurney. It's a 20 to 30 minutes treatment from 5 to 20 days. I dont know if i can do it. Anyone here have any advice for me?

Gilbert Sanchez, my sister has throat cancer. I found a Facebook page for head and neck cancer. Got lots of replays to my questions. I'd go there, or find others who are dealing with this terrible affliction. My sisters Dr. Told us very little on what to expect as far as side effects. My sister is 75 years old and I think the Dr. Didn't want to scare her, but her not sharing what to expect lead to more complications. Go to those who can share what they have done to help themselves. God bless you, I hope and wish you the best.

+Bubble Baka the individual treatments last less than 10 minutes , you don't feel any pain during the treatment but there are a lot of side effects. Please read my reply to Fida Khan above. Thank you.
