This is the first of two confrontations he has with his "mother". Every time I watch these episodes I wind up crying my eyes out, as I had a similar upbringing. The only person that showed Doc love when he was a child was his Auntie Joan. This is an excellent show!

She can't get along with the baby as she couldn't get along with her own son Martin. When she returns to Portugal she has Martins clock in her luggage, that one which he inherrited from auntie Joan and which belonged to his grandfather before. So that nasty woman is a thief - she had stolen from her own son!!
I know Doc Martin is a total *BLEEP!* most of the time, but I can’t help being empathetic and feeling sorry for him right now. Being rejected and made to feel unwanted in his childhood might be one of the reasons he is the way he is. His bullying and offhand behaviour is giving him something to hide behind, like a hard prickly outside, to make him less vulnerable so he can’t be taken advantage of. He hasn’t been nurtured and cared for emotionally.
His parents seem to get this selfish perverse sense of hurting their relatives. Sickening and disgusting. Shame on them!! His mother and father not taking responsibility for any of their failures or behavior😮. Both sickening and disgusting. Trying to take money away from Joan and martin. Shameful.
Two incredibly selfish manipulative individuals blaming Martin for everything. The father was stupid enough to be swindled out of everything. The the SURGEON FATHER HAS THE AUDACITY TO SAY HIS SON HAS NO FINANCIAL EXPERTISE WHEN HE IS THE one who bails his father OUT WHEN HE HAS NO PLACE TO LIVE BECAUSE he lost ALL HIS MONEY AFTER HE WAS SWINDLED. SO WHAT DOES HE DO?? HE PICKS MARTIN AND JOAN APART BECAUSE THEY HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF MONEY THAT HE doesn’t have and can’t control. ONE OF THE WORST THNGS IS PEOPLE WHO WERE SUCCESSFUL IN MIDLIFE AND THEN THEY LOSE ALL THEIR MONEY, THEY ARE INSUFFERABLE AND TAKE IT OUT ON PEOPLE WHO HAVE WHAT THEY WANT.
Any other mother would be so proud of a son like Martin. With the parents he had, he turned out to be a top-knotch doctor.
