I give this documentary 1 star....I'm feeling generous!
That is generous.!!
There will never be another reason Rush. My #1 band. I’ve loved them since i was 16 and I’m 63 now. Still buying their music and books
From the age of 18, and now I am 66 and still loves them. I even made my grandson love them :)
This is the kind of criticism Rush always had to deal with and listen to from people who don’t get it. All there albums are 10s.
LOL hemispheres 3 stars ,, yup ok these mungbeans are out in left field
@@zippygogo3660yeah my exact thoughts. 3 stars for Hemispheres is laughable. The DJs were typical. The musos worshipped them.
They never gave the fans what they wanted... they gave them what they NEEDED!
Thanks for posting. People don't realize/appreciate how Internet has changed everything. We used to sit for hours and suffer all those crappy songs/bands on MTV just so we may catch a Rush video!. Now it's just a few clicks! Thank God...
Also Neil's clean n intelligent lyrics made Rush more appealing. RIP Neil...
“"Most rock journalism is people who can't write, interviewing people who can't talk, for people who can't read." - Frank Zappa
Right?
Makes for a great sound bite but it’s a sweeping generalisation
@@ntak7716 That's why he said "most rock journalism" not "all rock journalism".

The three greatest musicians of all time
None of these guys are rush fans, they talked trash about them the whole part 1 and 2
Especially that tool "Danger" ............what a douche!
No idea what you guys are talking about, they raved about Rush throughout the entire video
It's absolutely criminal that this doc only has only 58k views. It's very well done!
RIP Professor.
The fact that ANY of these "definitive" History of RUSH videos still have EVEN ONE PERSON pronouncing Neil's surname as "Purt" is an absolute embarrassment and instantly discredits the entire thing for me.
It bothers me too, but this is a documentary, and one of the facts that it documents is the prevalence with which Neil's name is mispronounced.
Dumbest gatekeep ever. "Oh you didn't pronounce his name right, you don't know anything about anything now" Really?
@@seandpizzle Well aren't you up on the current lingo! "Gatekeeping"? No, it's a measure of respect to pronounce someone's name correctly, especially when your creating an allegedly professional documentary based on the man's life's work. I'm far from some Rush super fan, but I am a drummer, and Neil went to great lengths in print and film interviews to inform folks how his surname is pronounced. How about for the rest of your life, everyone you know sends you a birthday card on a day that is nowhere near your actual birthday? Or, everytime you go into your favorite bar, the bartender always, and I mean without fail, calls you by some incorrect name that's not even close to your real name? Just by your comment alone, I can tell you are a person that doesn't take any pride in whatever your work is. You're content to cruise on through the day, doing the bare minimum and doing it as unremarkably as can be.
@@toddmorrissey8372 I absolutely agree about the respect thing. All I'm saying is that saying it incorrectly doesn't automatically make everything they say stupid or false. Growing up I always heard it as "Pert", and now, even though I know better, that's the first way I hear it in my head. I'm guessing the situation is similar here
Hemispheres 3 stars??? WTF LMAO That was a FN incredible masterpiece
My favourite band of all time, Hemispheres my favourite album !!
Can not even watch this, most interviewed seem negative.....had enough negativity about RUSH for 40 years. THEY ARE THE BEST PERIOD.
This was ok but as usual, beyond Moving Pictures very little mention if any...people talk about how great Rush is but never go beyond Moving Pictures...(ooo we love 2112 because its about rebellion and A Passage To Bangkok about dope!) There's so much more to this band, so much more to love. For the true fans, they can always rediscover something. You dont have to love it all, its not for everyone. But I always said that unless you're a musician or music aficionado, you really wont get Rush. They've pretty much always been an exclusive club, not for everyone, outside the box, defying all category. And...there's more beyond 1981!!!
Sadly, with the last of this bands recordings, ends an era of their unique style of musical greatness. Though left with great tracks, I don't believe that such musical greatness, will in my lifetime, ever be witnessed again :(
These three were as one.
Indeed.
True
Sadly for our love of this amazing Rush experience we enjoyed, it shows all of our times on this planet are finite...I would ad when something so powerful as Neil's death happens, it reminds me how it really doesn't matter what the hell we did in the end. No one gets out of here alive, as Jim said!
Agreed.
God sent.
They were a once in a lifetime miracle of musical genius. Dare i say musical GODS ?
Yes..God's...
You got to love people with vary little talent criticizing others with ten times the amount of talent.
Not sure what you watched, they were gushing about how great the band was.
IMHO Signals, their next album, was no slacker either. Subdivisions, Analog Kid and New World Man several of my favorites!
I agree with you. I think Signals was experimental because in 80s the Synths were making it big so Geddy wanted to experiment with more keyboard which Alex hated coz as he said "it's not even an instrument and takes up the same freq. As guitar"...but still Signals songs were all good. Countdown analog kid weapon chemistry etc etc the 1 with violin. All of them...
Anyway as I said Rush made a Big mistake by dropping Terry Brown and bringing some British dude who had never heard of Rush and was producing some crap like boy George or some punk synth bands in UK ??
Terry was like the 4th member. He even sings along with Geddy a little in Limelight .
I recently realized that He was the best Rush producer. They should've brought him back after grace under pressure .... :-(
I can't agree more
The Analog Kid tells a great story!
If you're going to be interviewed on a Rush documentary at least pronounce Neil's name correctly.
Most people dont unfortunately.
Every time I run across another butchering of a simple enough last name to say, I quickly print out ....P👂T or Peeert. Which makes me out to be some kind of ass. I will be that ass.

La villa Strangiato "Too jammy" . now that's just insane
it's a ridiculous hyperbolic comment...??!! it's a FKN jam!!! best!!!
These bozos are just jealous they can’t do what Rush does with ease. 😎
Dumass comment "too jammy". That guy is certainly no musician.
If you go on and on with a solo like zep use to , you could say it's too jammy. But Strangiato too jammy? Lmfao
That's when I realized these were idiots and stopped there.
Hemispheres a mirror story of 2112 ?
Excuse me😖
3 stars?!? Hellloooooweeee
Yes 2112 is a lot more consistent
Right? I was thinking what the fuck does this kid even mean?
I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that none of these weekend warrior guitar scrubs realize that they all come off like This is Spinal Tap.
All those “music critics”. The fans were the most important.
Hemispheres 3 of 5 stars? Gimme a break. I readily admit that I'm a homer, but this rating is WAY off. WAAY off.
Pretentious English guys..
i couldn't believe in part 1 they said cygnus x1 and xanadu were too much, then they talk bad about hemispheres :(
Right 3 stars please lol
I wouldn’t lend much credibility to those ratings. The guys they were interviewing were largely idiots to begin with, and the guy playing the guitar parts wasn’t even playing them correctly in most cases.
I've listened to this album sooooo many times, especially on road trips to new canoeing adventures driving in the middle of nowhere at 2:00 in the morning. You are at the peak of alertness when you listen to this from beginning to end. Definitely goes to "11" on my dial !
That odd time signature at the beginning of YYZ is morse code for Pearson International Airport call sign Which is of Course YYZ
Welcome to my teens in southern Ontario. What a time. Trying to imagine being a teen now is just too depressing.
Exactly Jason Doctor. DJ Tank Montana claims Red Barchetta was actually about Peart's uncles car? If you're a novice RUSH fan, you'd know that Neil wrote this epic mini-story by being inspired by a story in the car mag Car & Driver. Neil & the writer met up years later to share a motorcycle ride. True RUSH fans want to get the facts straight, so future generations can get the story right.
That DJ was clueless
Nobody has the intelligence musically to make a judgment critically about RUSH and their genius and creativity. If you think so? STEP UP
I listen to HOURS NONSTOP sunk deep into my Bean bag, wearing my Koss headphones that were bigger than my head...with a cord stretched taunt to the 8 track...hours and hours..
It seems that the producers spent all their money on getting the rights to some of the songs and none on securing credible critics. This doc comes across as "I asked my buddies from down the street what they think about Rush".
Where did they put together this group of idiots to comment on Rush?
right?!
13:08 Only a true Scot would pronounce Alex's name as "ALEC Lifeson" :I'm surprised he didn't call him Alec McLifeson ..by the way!
Wouldn't a Scot call him Alec MACLifeson?😊
No...don't think Alex was Catholic...Dutch parents..so...protestant good bet so it is McLifeson I think.....
Clockwork Angels was their final and
that’s a fantastic album too
Yes it was!
My PERSONAL opinion ALL their albums were great!!!
I love the guy saying how the intro to spirit of Radio is this triplet type thing , Hmmm sounds like 16th notes to me !! 😉
I've never actually analyzed it, but simple counting tells you it's not straight triplets. It's as if they found people who would either do these interviews for free or as cheap as possible.
"Subdivisions" probably, overall their best song. 1982, from their Signals LP
Old RUSH 1976 -1981 super,amazing music !!!
Oh my!! That guitar player didn’t play anything remotely close to how it’s played on guitar. You may want to audition next time. Lol
yeah, guy sucked
I KNOW omG i was literally yelling at the screen.. Lmao! Ha! Thanks for making me feel less insane. Cheers!
I notice discrepancies too !
love when he says a complicated riff when its diatonic thirds in the solo section of Tom Sawyer geez louise
Well, it's close, but still blatantly wrong. Wrong enough that I don't know how he missed it, missing that D on the B string for the Spirit Of Radio is so clear I wonder what his problem is. There are videos of Alex demonstrating how to play it on CZcams, so there's no excuse for getting it wrong.
"It's actually just about the trees" LOL!
I'm sure Neil said that with a wink and a smile. Wondering whether he would get the joke.
(facepalm)
@@laneeric Oh yea! I'm sure he was hoping the guy would get the joke.
Yeah, no! LOL Neil said the song was about French-speaking Canadians vs English speakers, but that he wanted every listener to apply to whatever they imagine.
Ok, I gotta chime in here, can the duuude in the sunglasses just shut the heck up??? dude's wasted
And embarrasses himself attempting to play the "YYZ" riff.
That dude in the wrestlemania shirt is clueless. Rush never became sad rockers. Deep Purple give me a break, good band but nowhere near the greatness of Rush.
Wrestlemania? Probably a KISS fan.
Jules Akers you got that right. There is no band ever to accomplish or sound as tecnical as rush.
So true but obviously not all their albums are ten.
I totally agree. Those guys joyfully pursued their musical journey.
He's a jackass!!!!
Rush are their own genre
The first time I’d ever heard of Rush was in 1976 when I saw them open for Bad Company. I’ve been a huge fan ever since.
I'm afraid there's some incorrect information in this documentary:
1:17 Hemispheres is not a concept album. The first half has a long piece that tells a story, the second half has three shorter songs that are unrelated to the long piece. By definition it is not a concept album.
3:52 There are no "cowbell flurries" in La Villa Strangiato (at least not on the studio recording).
6:07 No, it's nothing like an opera or musical. With operas and musicals, the focus is specifically on telling the story through singing, therefore the singing and words are the centrepieces. La Villa Strangiato is telling a story without the use of singing and lyrics, therefore it is almost diametrically opposed to operas and musicals in its approach.
10:26 Neil Peart's surname is pronounced incorrectly.
13:07 It's "The Spirit of Radio" not "Spirit of the Radio", it's "Alex Lifeson" not "Alec Lifeson" and that guitar part is 16th notes, not triplets.
18:26 No, the lyrics in Freewill are not "their statement to corporations" on writing what they want to write. They are about general freedom of choice and believing what you want to believe in. The song is talking about big issues far beyond the band's past experiences with corporations.
19:34 There's no shuffle feel in Freewill. It goes into a rolling 6/8 feel right from the start of the instrumental section and remains that way right until the end of the guitar solo. No shuffle to be found there.
19:42 The chorus isn't just in 3/4. It's made up of a loop of 3 bars of 4/4 and a bar of 3/4.
19:44 Again, no shuffle in Freewill. And that 6/8 section isn't even a triplet feel, it's based on 8th notes in groups of 3s. It might sound like a triplet feel but there are no triplets involved.
27:29 Tom Sawyer does not have "a lot of drum solos". It has a lot of drum fills but only one drum solo which occurs just after the guitar solo. And there are no bass solos in Tom Sawyer, the closest thing to a bass solo is when the bass is playing the riff just before the guitar solo starts. That is not a bass solo though.
28:47 The guitar solo in Tom Sawyer is not in 7/4, it's in 7/8 with some bars of 13/16.
32:04 Again, it's "Alex Lifeson" not "Alec Lifeson".
35:25 Again, Neil Peart's surname is pronounced incorrectly and at the beginning of YYZ he is not playing a bell, he is playing a crotale.
35:32 The vast majority of YYZ is in 4/4. The intro and outro are the only sections of the track that are not in 4/4.
36:34 No the lyrics in Witch Hunt are not about censorship at all. They are about an angry vigilante mob gathering together.
36:47 Limelight is not the last song on the album, nor does it begin with a sequencer. Vital Signs is the last song on the album and that song does begin with a sequencer.
38:13 2112 is not 19 minutes long, it's 20 1/2 minutes long.
Very accurate corrections
You , sir, a a true RUSH fan !! And true RUSH fans who watched this “ story so far” agree with every mistake these “ commentators/critics/wannabe musicians “ made….that you were so prudent to point out. True RUSH fans stand behind your observations and - aside from watching anything RUSH and loving watching it….all I hear when most of these guys try to “ nutshell” our beloved trio is…blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah etc etc…to quote Mr Živojinoć
Watching LA Villa always reminds me that I've been playing guitar and copping Rush tunes since 1982 and still don't own a volume pedal. Gotta fix that today.
There should be at least three more volumes in this documentary.
Makes me wonder how the hell I ever developed such a fine rock and roll taste without listening to a bunch of bobble-headed critics like Robert christgau.
If you have a question , ask me , I was there in the beginning , and I'm here at the end , too .
I love the videos and they should've just posted them without talking. I'm not sure if these guys really like Rush and some of their views and tone are kind of dissing Rush. One of the guys says basically Alex is no Jimmy Page and Rush is no Led Zeppelin. They are definitely NOT Led Zeppelin and Jimmy couldn't play some of the Rush songs, but I betcha Alex can play all of the Zeppelin songs.
Part1 yeah, there is something off putting about this documentary. It's almost like some of the compliments from some of the interviewees are back handed. I also don't know who any of these people are. Who are these people? I don't mean to be insulting but I'm literally not familiar with any of these people.
@@ghendar they're hacks who think they know something and a couple pretty stoned especially the guy in the glasses. The balding blond guy now he's clueless and biased against the band
Rush was always awesome live...Zep mostly sucked live, in my opinion.
Part1 Like the Jimmy Page comment, have the same thought, but then again, it’s all about different flavours and personal opinions...
There are definitely people showing great disrespect and dislike for Rush in this video.
LMAO...Not one of these guys ,( interviewee's), could play a single riff correctly....now that's a true testament to the bands musicianship
I’m going to say and I don’t really care what anyone says RUSH is my favourite all time band, I’m a 64 year old Canadian man, I’ve been listening to them for over 50 years and heard a lot of music over the years but I asked myself who is your all time favourite band? I said RUSH 🤟
Their creativity was off the charts.
Oh man, there's a Rush one of these? I LOVE these long involved docos that delve deep into the music. Once I saw the font graphics I knew it was done by the same people as the YES, Genesis, & AC/DC ones I've seen. Thank you for this and timely of course.
Thanks for watching! We have a special feature of Neil Peart and Rush in our next issue of Music Legends Magazine - it will be available to read online on 13th February at mlmag.uk/issues. He was an amazing guy - will be missed.

Jim Geiger Music Wow Jim 😂😭
I thought it was pretty clear what " The Trees" lyrics meant. It was the small ( poor) vs big ( rich). The big ones consumed everything and they did not understand why the poor complained, when they were given free shade. The poor revolted and demanded more.. and the consequence of this is that they were all brought down by ax, etc. It basically is saying that if the poor do revolt and try to take what they think is just as much theirs.... that everybody will suffer. Great lyrics.. reality discussed in fantasy
La Villa Strangiato... Magnificent ! I still love to tune out the world with this perfect instrumental through my headphones. I think that when I pass I would like for this piece to be playing on repeat at my wake. (Note to self, indicate this on my will) I hope that I can hear it :)
The wrestlemania dude must have been at the right place at the right time to get on camera. We as Rush fans have opinions on favorites but we all agree they are masters and profoundly affected our lives. This dude thinks they stopped making a difference in 1981? Note to production staff...
The next time you sit someone down to show how a guitar part is played, MAKE SURE THEY KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEY'RE DOING!!

Where did they find these idiots to interview? Red Barchetta is apparently a hokey story about Neil's uncle. Lmfao

Hemispheres and 2112 had very little in common, neither conceptually nor musically. 2112 was a future shock dystopia ruled by a theocratic regime, musically driven by chunky power chords, furious shredding lead guitars and Geddy's shrieking banshee vocals. 9/10
Hemispheres is about the battle between emotion and intellect, expressed as two Gods in conflict over the human plight, leaving humanity in a constant tug-of-war between the two extremes, until a new, third being intervenes as a reconciling force to keep consciousness in balance. Musically, shifting from vast, ambient chordal arrangements to fast hard hitting orchestral power and hypnotic atmospheres. 8/10
These two things are NOT the same!!!

The Trees was simple to decode. It was Canada (Maple) vs America (Oaks)....Oh and btw it's PEARt

Permanent Waves, Motion Pictures and Exit Stage Left were favorites...the latter being best of .
The only people in this docu who really got Rush were the 2 musicians. The radio guys TRIED to sound like they did but missed the mark. I guess the difference is the perspective of the two.

most overstated comment "there is no other band like RUSH" well no shit...
This is godawful, some of these twonks were the same guys who, back in the day, were saying Rush was shit. We knew better. Now they're trying to jump on the bandwagon, and it's painful watching them pretend to be true fans. Us true fans can spot the difference.
Well SAID!
These guys were in their early twenties when they wrote and played La Villa Strangiato . They were better musicians then than 99 % of all the ones that we heard on the radio then and now . These guys comenting are trying to make sense out of something way over their heads .
THE Spirit of Radio .... not Spirit of THE Radio...sigh
Also Freewill is about secular humanism - it's not to do with the band standing up to the record company...
I actually didn't know there was a term for it but that is spot on. The name of the song could easily have been Secular Humanism. lol The song is about (the writer) choosing not to dogmatically follow "a ready guide in some celestial voice" - The Bible. A book that instills "fantom fears" and espouses a "kindness that can kill" - altruism (as described by the writer). An idea that one should sacrifice himself or his own dreams, happiness and aspirations for the good of others. Or that the good of others should be your highest moral purpose. It has been said, that you cannot fully practice this type of an ideal without it ultimately resulting in your own failure or death. For example; If every time you prepared a meal, it was ONLY for others to eat, you yourself would be undernourished and ultimately die of starvation. At the time, Neil Peart felt that one should do for oneself and one's own happiness and do it to the utmost of one's ability. While allowing others to do the same for their own selves.
Having learned a new term, I've got to say I really don't like it or where it came from. I'm not in charge of rewriting the history of language. I AM happy about that, but there just isn't another word or term that facilitates the same concept. My problem is there shouldn't be one. There isn't a term or word for an elephant that is genetically dissimilar to the genetics of a tomcat. Elephants are already in no way similar to a tomcat.... If society had been under the mistaken assumption that elephants and cats were in fact very similar, Neil Peart would have written a song to set us all straight.
Hello, is there is a Part Three?
l like the guys that can play give there opinions not the DJ's , we all know Rush is a great band just listen there great musicians no question about that .
Everyonr has an opinion of an artist painting, people see things differently as the artist himself .the band has already explained what some of their lyrics mean, just go with that,NEAL WROTE them, leave it at that...to me,every song is now a master peice. ..rest easy Neal. ..
True legends.
There have been been a few documentary attempts at putting this band properly into the annals of music history. Nobody has gotten it quite right yet. An enjoyable watch, nonetheless.

And yes a piano has hammers that strike each set of strings . These guys!!! Where do they come from ???
