Everything Prince Paul has produced is pure gold and I am mystified that "6 Feet Deep" is not recognized as one of the best produced albums of all time - I have listened to it over ten thousand times
Dope I have a Gravediggaz forearm tattoo
it was .. until A Prince Among Thieves came out!
Prince Paul is very underrated. He's the reason De La Soul is dope. I don't know what album I like more, 3 Feet High and Rising or De La Soul is dead. Yeah, Prince Paul deserves his props!
De la without Paul is dope too.
Prince Paul was never underrated. He was the hottest producer in the late eighties and everyone in rap knew it. 3 feet high and rising was the first real album to showcase the production over the lyrics. That’s why it was so huge, the sampling. Trugoy and Pos were very mediocre rappers. Around this time Paul did the best song on MCLytes album as well as the best songs on 3rd Bass’s debut. Calling him underrated means you weren’t there or you don’t remember.
Prince Paul definitely gets props. The reason I believe he doesn't get more props is because outside of De La Soul, the groups he was associated with didn't have a lot of commercial success. He's one of the dopest producers and definitely deserves his flowers.
Prince Among Thieves is probably my fav but I like the Psychoanalysis album a lot too and that first De La album is a masterpiece. Handsome Boy Modeling School was great as well. Gravediggaz. Dude is all over the place. Very creative and influential cat.
Prince among thieves is the album for me. I based every conceptual album I ever created off of that project. This man is the truth.
@@ShayJToday you know apparently they were gonna make it into a short film but it got scrapped at some point. You can still find some of the little videos floating around. Like the scene with Everlast as the corrupt cop.
@@Shlogger oh bro i saw all the clips on CZcams i could find a while back. Spent my high school years absorbing this tape. Not many producers could ever replicate that type of art man. That tape should be in a time capsule.
@@ShayJToday it pretty much is a time capsule. lol. a little piece of history from a time some of the best hip hop. Paul was definitely a big part of that.
Handsome Boy Modelling School!
Well done! I had an opportunity to work with Paul a few times over the years as a Concert Producer and Tour Producer (A Prince Among Thieves and DJ Events), an amazing experience with a solid Brother.
Very cool!
Same. Several projects including Negroes On Ice.
@@DefGoldbloom, clever handle you have, a play on on Jeff Goldblum's name...nice one!
@@LordChastened, diggit!
I don't think we talk about goats in terms of producers, but Prince Paul is top 5 100%
A Prince Among Thieves(1999) was a masterpiece. I still listen to that to this day.
1998*
@niko478 it was released on my mom's birthday in February of 1999, according to wiki. I remember 99 specifically because that's the year I could finally afford a Clarion amp and two 10s for my car.😁
My favorite beat made by Paul was pass the plug a classic boom bap beat that to this day can hang with any beat from then to today...big up's to Prince Paul.
In 1988 I was 10 years old and that Stetsasonic album "In Full Gear" blew my mind as a kid. I couldn't stop listening to it and that was my introduction to prince paul and the reason I fell in love with hip hop. 35 years later and I still listen to that album! Thank you so much for covering Prince Paul. I've always thought he was top 5 in terms of creativity and originality in hip-hop
If you can't say it all, just sat STET!
Lol The Stet is the reason why I know all the countries in South Africa.
✌🏿💯🫡👍🏿
‘The Truth’ on Handsome Boy album (with J Live) is amazing.
I have the Prince Among Thieves on vinyl too.
I'd fucking love to own the prince amongst thieves on vinyl. That's awesome brother!!
One of my all time fave tunes of any genre.
as a '71er from turkiye
w/o much 'english'
i fell in love with the
beats, samples, and
rhymes from rap
artists like
\°°/PRINCE PAUL\°°/
that name alone,
just mind blowin'.
a must for me that album
PRINCE AMONG THIEVES.
but i was more of a
12"vinyl lover with those
club, i-mental, dub,
and all kinds of remixxs.
all da early DE LA SOUL
12"vinyl, and that
'TALKIN' ALL THAT JAZZ'
still with me, not lost,
not sold and not stolen.
I'm excited to check out Resident Alien, Itstrumentals, and Hip Hop Gold Dust. And The Dix!
Before Madlib and Alchemist there was Prince Paul! One of my favorites of all time!
Prince Amongst Thieves is one of my favorite albums of all time. And the 1st 2 gravediggaz albums are dope af
Had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with Paul (a friend of a friend) on a NY trip a few years ago. Really cool, humble guy with a great sense of humour, exactly as you’d imagine.
Don’t sleep on his 33.3 podcast too.
Great video!!!! Paul is sooo underrated!!! A Prince Among Thieves is a classic! So creative
Definitely one of my favorite producers.. Prince among thieves is indeed highly underrated. Great video. I still listen to "Sally" on wax in 2023 ✌️
love the content, a dan the automator doc would be dope!
Great idea!
@@DefGoldbloom Ant on atmosphere
Thanks for this. Prince Paul definitely deserves his flowers and respect/recognition for all his contributions. Big up DJ Paul aka the Doo Doo Man
I'm 2 minutes in and this is already dope. Peace. My favorite one of his projects is buhloone mindstate
His work on Buhloone Mindstate is some of the best production of all time
Such a wonderful album.
@@mrmass71 yea i kno🐐. What's ur favorite song on it?
@@eesh9714 it's a list I'm afraid - Long Island Wildin', I Am I Be, Breakadawn, In The Woods, Patti Duke, Ego Trippin'!
@@mrmass71 nice mine is probably breakadawn
He also did some amazing work on Justin Warfields debut album, yep Prince Paul is one of my fav producers as well, great video!
Cool, thanks!
Great album!
Gratitude
Ps Talking All That Jazz is one of the first hip hop songs to use a jazz samples.
Didnt know Prince Pau produced "No Sex (In the Champagne Room) . Peace to Gerald Levert.
Prince Paul is a legend!
Prince Paul and Larry Smith I would say are the 2 most underrated.
Oooooh, Larry Smith too!!!
You did it again, man - Prince Paul is 100% one of the best to ever do it, for sure. Keep 'em coming!
No doubt!
This needed to be done💯🔥 One correction. When Gravediggaz was form.. Rza was on fire in 94 with Wu Tang.
Their first album came out in 94 but they were formed even before the Wu!
This was thoroughly well done, much deserved flowers for Prince Paul. Because of you, you reminded me to search up my absolute favorite track from him... "You Made Me (A.K.C)"
Not exactly a Prince Paul beat but an album that he coproduced with Two Macero (Miles Davis) was Vernon Reid the guitarist from Living Colour's first solo album "Mistaken Identity".
I will quote something I wrote years ago...because he inspires me...
"Word to Prince Paul I stand tall"...
Wow!!! Great idea with Prince Paul!! Amazing work 👌
Thank you! Cheers!
One of my faves of all time and is so often forgotten in these discussions! He made me feel like weird nerds like me had a place in hip hop!
this was great! I hope prince Paul sees this...hes a true producer!
thank you so much for giving this legend his flowers
I was about to say how u forgot to mention his boy band the Dix 😂😂. That ep is hilarious. Bit yea prince paul is one of my biggest inspirations. Psychoanalysis, handsome boy modeling school and prince among thieves get heavy plays from me still as well as all the legendary group stuff he did
Prince among thieves...
Treal dope dope!!!!
Thanks Prince Paul!!! Always
Nice job w this. i usually dont like these narrated recaps of aspects of hiphop but i appreciated this. gravediggaz was really influential in my life. prince amongst thieves is one of my favorite albums. real hiphop heads respect prince paul!
Great video! However, De La didn’t drop Paul. Paul suggested that they made their album themselves
Good point!
WOW! Thanks for this insight! I knew Paul was good but you just unlocked something that I've been missing... I'll check out Paul's work. Much appreciated.
"I said, The weebles wobble, but I dabble in verbals
The movies that you're makin get the herbalz
This ain't a Prince Paul loop from The Turtles
It's just 3rd Bass givin y'all the herbalz''
RESPECT TO PRINCE PAUL.
This was so good! I learned a lot
Always loved Prince Paul, have many of his 💿 Thanks for making this!
Thank you for making this
Great video and thank you for giving Paul his well deserved flowers. He is the original abstract producer in this hip hop game. The reason producers like Madlib exist.
Thank you for that I love Prince Paul’s work
This was great! I absolutely love Handsome Boy Modeling School! Their second album is a fucking classic!! I can't wait for their third album! 😊
Great video, Prince Paule well deserved all appreciation
well done !
This was so much needed thank you!!! 12:54
Damn straight! Prince Paul is seriously slept on. He deserves a ton more praise for all he’s accomplished.
Good work, man. Just got the new Tape OP today with Paul's interview.. Sent me down the rabbit hole.. Thanks!
Great video!! I'm going through my Caselogics right now! 😝🤘
One of my favorite joints he produced was Brooklyn Queens from 3rd Bass
So happy I just found this channel. Dude is covering all my favorite shit. Can’t wait to watch this
Thank you! Very cool video essay, I really didn't know much about him outside De La Soul.
Good stuff
I like the fact that your channel is high lighting more underground, unsung talent of the hip hop genre…. Good job 👍🏿
3 feet high & rising
One of my favorite albums of all time ..
Thank you for giving this man the props he deserves. One of the best ever!
Thanks for making this video. Spread the doo doo that is Prince Paul
This was so good. Dude is my favorite of all time. GOATED in my world. Thank you for this
prince paul definitely an underrated og
The internet needed this vid so bad! Gravediggaz blew my mind in high school, I think I like them even more than Wu-Tang. Yeah, I said it.
@Def Goldboom this is great thank you so much.
Thank you for watching!
Awesome video This goat. Top 5 producers
Great video!!!!!! I don’t seen any love to prince paul online at all
"Three Feet High and Rising" ruined my 7th grade mind forever, and I love it.
Agreed.. such a legendary producer with many classics
DOPE presentation! First time seeing your work. This video flowed very well and was executed straight to its points, LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE IN THE FUTURE
Peace thank you!
Prince among Thieves is an absolute masterpiece.🙏🏼I’m still bumpin it in my ride on the regular.🔊
His production on De La and Gravediggaz was phenomenal as well.🔥💾🔥
Paul always brought his unique flava to the table to nourish the souls.
Mad props to the legendary Prince Paul.
Another dope vid Bro.
Peace Def.
His Hip Opera album, A Prince Among Thieves, is still something I bump to this very day. You had some incredible performances by Kool Keith (Weapon World), Big Daddy Kane (Macula’s Theory), Xzibit & Sadat X (Handle Your Time), Everlast (The Men In Blue), De La Soul (More Than U Know), and so many more 💯
Between that album and De La Soul Is Dead, I’ve had Prince Paul in my Top 3 for decades! Much respect
Psychoanalysis: What Is It? is in my top 10. The whole album is a masterpiece and Beautiful Night is still the rawest track ever made.
I’ve always loved prince Paul..It’s funny ,I bought every album in his discography as they came out
I'm feeling your pitch SUN. Keep doing yo thing.
Really great videos.
Thank you!
Wow, just found your channel and have watched this and the one on Def Jux. The only thing I can say besides they're awesome is I wish they were longer. Subscribed.
I see I'm going to have to watch the one on Kool Keith before I shut down for the night.
Peace, thank you!
In Germany: Prince Paul, Diamond D, J Dilla, Erick Sermon and Q-Tip🖤❤️💛
And of course EL-P
Another great mini doc! Keep dropping gems for real hip-hop heads!also I was a huge gravediggaz fan! I introduced them to so many of my friends. And they all ended up loving their music. No one sounded like them still to this day! But I was always a big fan of Prince Paul and I never understood why he didn't get the respect he deserved? But I'm glad this is out there for people to see because his influence and Hip-Hop is undeniable!
Peace thank you!
a living legend.
a genius.
and a humble happy funny dude.
P.P.
Nice video. Thx for sharing.
So awesome I love PrincePaul🙏🏽❤️😊
I sure love that Gravediggaz album. It's still one of my favorite hiphop albums after 30 years! Well done!
A genius who wasn't allowed to fully blossom early on.
Still managed to get his artistry out there.
Stet's 2n album was "In Full Gear"; I LOVE your enthusiasm.
Lol the sequential tom at the beginning !! I had that back in 85 !!
Beautiful Night is possibly the most unsettling rap song I've ever heard. It just shrugs chilly violence as a little tweak of the mind.
He is the genius behind the first Gravediggaz album.
How is the guy responsible for the most famous classic in all thee world of music - Plug Tunin.
The orgy of samples used, breathtakingly crafted for years of listening enjoyment.
✌🏿💯👍🏿
legendary
I highly recommend the What Had Happened Was podcast, they have a great series of interviews with the Prince. And other amazing Hip Hop people as well.
FACTS! That pod was one of my main points of research for this vid, and its an amazing listen start to finish
@@DefGoldbloom The ep’s with Dante Ross where also very moving and awesome to listen to!!
The Biz Markie Doc was shown at the Tribeca Festival so hopefully out soon. Salute Prince Paul, always a legend for me
Dope!! I can’t wait to see it
Prince among thieves is my favorite album of any genre
Good call excellent album
Prince Paul inspired me to start making beats. Love his contributions to hip hop.
Great video! Two other super-underrated producers are Easy Moe Bee and Q-Tip!
Totally agree!
Easy Mo Bee is one of the most humblest beings I have ever met, and am glad to call him a friend...
Welcome to weapon World! Is my favorite Prince Paul album
That's a song by Kool Keith on prince among thieves album its number like 12 I think on the CD. Lol. I'd rap that song to my friends back in the day and they'd all b amazed
This is essential. My top legendary producers without question are preemo, Dilla & Paul. I always thought Paul was up there with a LOT of heads. If anyone has any interest in this brilliant mind & phenomenal music maker never mind hip hop creator listen to the multi episode podcast he did with “what had happened was” (3 or 4 I think) that was/is open Mike Eagles podcast (each person he talks to is super interesting whether you think it will be or not, HIGHLY recommend) anyway, Paul if you happen to see this, or if any other kid out there feels weird, a bit out of place, not fitting in with any one crew of kids because you’re rocking it all (I was a punk rock, hip hop skateboarder kid in the late 80’s/early 90’s with love for grindcore, funk, reggae, pop & a bunch of prince) From 3 feet high changing my life I quickly started digging around for who this Paul dude was & now as a 45yr old weirdo he’s still making me feel. “….and you ain’t getting a hair cut neither……scrubba”
Sorry that was very long.
that is my favorite season of that podcast. Some really revealing stories. Really took me back to what I was doing around the time of those old releases.
Thanks for this Video! It's just a few days ago that I thought damn...Prince Paul is maybe the most underrated Producer there. And here is your video, amazing.
But it's always the people that arent interested in hiphop that much and don't know about it that much. and it's simply a small amount of people who are interested that much really, they are called the real hiphop heads in the scene. cause if you know, you definetly know prince paul and how he influenced hiphop. nice that this happens before he dies...not like Dilla and DOOM...especially them both weren't mentioned that much either before they died.... After death everybody claims he knew them always..bullshit. most people didn't :D cause...they are no hiphop heads, they only claim to be. it's easy today with internetz, everybody is an expert lol. if prince paul passes away it will be the same, remember my words...
But good point..you can easily get an expert by simply interest and using the internetz..that was much much harder back then...then you really had to have an addiction, passion...and that divided the heads from the non heads..
been really getting into de la soul, it's awesome to see what else he did after the first 3 albums he made with de la!
Nowhere to run nowhere to hide🔥
K-Def is another under rated
The methods of production in hip hop has changed utterly since the era of the sampler and deck, yet in terms of the music, I have yet to see it bettered.
I thought "The Handsome Boy Modelling School" was wierd but sooo much fun to listen to. And of course, De La Soul...whooohoooooo🖤💣👊🏿
Thanks
