When I peeled off the strong paint, the inside was also covered in damage.

i'm surprised you didn't change the frets , they are dead dead ! Great video as always dude !
Came to add the same thing...
Yeah, this guitar could really benefit from a total refret.
came here for the restoration, but always wait for the emoviolence riffs
Those frets are cooked beyond belief whoa
Polishing turds.
They are just broke in beautiful now
I’m amazed you didn’t re-fret it, or atleast level the frets!
I was hoping you’d leave a natural red transparent finish showing off that pretty wood grain but it was still an amazing restoration as always!!!
I agree with you! I would keep the factory paint. This is a vintage instrument and the traces of use only emphasized this. And now, despite the perfect paint, it's not the same guitar from the sixties anymore.
@pavel_mersin this guys doing great work- some of the guitars he does I think the same thing, but I would love to see this one in a store. agree I'd liked if he kept some paint here too tbh
I wish after he stripped it down, that he would have just put a clear coat on that beautiful wood and not repainted it at all. He does amazing work though.
This is, I believe, a Yamaha SG 2. Circa 1971. I love vintage Japan made Squiers and Yamaha’s. They always play and sound so nice. And the looks… we’ll just look at this beauty! Great job as always!
Odd but interesting Yamaha, searched and it is: SG-2 - April 1966, S-201/S-302, Release1Months laterSG-2andSG-3Model. Great Job.
Such a wonderful project. These Yamahas have one foot on either side of the 1960s - when Japan made basic electric guitars - and the 1970s when Japan began leading the world in guitar making.
It's one of my favourite looking guitars. Really enjoyed seeing the guitars innards and watching the restoration. Thanks.
Very inventive truss rod adjustment.
You’re good at repair and clean AND you’re good on guitar . Thank you
This is a dream guitar for me, partially because its cool looking partially because Link Wray played one
That guitars had a Hard Life. Those Frets are worn out. Still your Playing has improved So Much in the Short Time I've watched you. You make it Sounds Wonderful. Needs its Whammy bar back. All the Same You Should be very proud of your Work and Playing are getting better. You're Craftmanship is Fantastic. I Enjoy watching Work and Play!!!!
Why you decided not to put new frets? The steel is eaten in old ones.
Also my question.
Perfect Japan sound 60' 70'
I hope you can read this. I've watched a lot of your restoration videos and I enjoy them a lot. But I wander how could anyone let a Gibson or fender guitar get in that condition. I've spent over 45 years keeping my telecaster FROM getting in that condition. Keep up the good work cause we enjoy 😅
I can't believe the number of people that treat guitars like crap.
Always a pleasure watching you work from here in Massachusetts!👍👍
Awesome! Portraits of Past :)
Person: Man, I could use a decent but affordable guitar
Yamaha: I got u, fam.
Person: I got the guitar now I'm starting a band and our piano player needs something to pay.
Yamaha: Say no more.
Person: Shit, I just remembered I don't have a ride to practice.
Yamaha: You're not gonna believe this shit...
As much as I keep thinking that you should replace the wire brush, it does magic every time.
Greetings from Seattle.
Why don’t you refret it?
Yes. If ever a guitar was screaming for a refret this was the one.
That guitar has some SERIOUS Mojo!!! Great work as always, studio asyl 💖🔥
You can use a hydrogen peroxide bath and a UV lamp to whiten old yellowed plastic, if you wanted to try it.
I would keep the factory paint. This is a vintage instrument and the traces of use only emphasized this. And now, despite the perfect new paint, it's not the same guitar from the sixties anymore. It's another matter if the damage is too great and nothing can be done, but not in this case.
Looking at the videos of this guy, I understand that when a Japanese guitarist has nothing to do, he takes a brush and paints his guitar with the first paint that comes to hand. Sometimes without removing the accessories.
This guitar is better designed than a Fender.
really?
This guitar wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for fender
11:50
... so satisfying to watch
That headstock reminds me of a Flamingo head shape. The truss rod mechanism is unique but may also reduce the durability on the neck cavity. But it lasted, so, maybe it's fine? If there's is one more thing to fix, it would be a total refret to have it's full potential. Great video as always SYK! Keep it up!
Man, you have skill and patience to bring back to life this abused guitars. Please keep going. [Note: This old Yamaha has a very interesting truss rod adjustment placement]
Awesome As Always!
👏👏👏Sir I applaud your patience and perseverance.Well done.
You need to sand in between coats of lacquer and do I final sand with high grit and then buff so your finish doesn’t look all uneven and orange peely
That headstock shape is pretty awesome
Interesting truss rod adjustment placement 🤔
That headstock is awesome!!!! Next guitar kit I get, I’m shaping it like that!
one of the coolest guitars ever made
Love this one!
Excellent job!
Very nice restoration!
A very impressive transformation !! Is it just me or is this guitar very very good sound-aise?
I also must say I love or quite unique playing style!
Nice Guitar,Great Work!!!
Nice restoration but that guitar does look better in white
That is the weirdest guitar I have ever seen or heard. Could you even find replacement hardware for such a thing? Those frets need to be changed out though, they are pitted right through.
Great job! It needs to be refretted, but wow! Awesome restoration!
Another job well done! In the end, it looks like a brand new guitar... 😊👍🏻
I agree, why didn't you replace the frets? Those things were destroyed. Otherwise, it looks amazing and sounded better than I thought it would for some reason.
Gotta start recrowning frets. Those things are toast.
Masterfully done. I'm impressed!
Fantastic job. Taking what you had to start with and turning it into the beautiful guitar you ended up with is grea5.
This is kind of like the guitar that this guy I know was selling except that it was a different shape and color with different hardware. Other than that they're dead ringers for each other. His was made in Mexico though, not Japan.
If the frets aren't buzzing, leave them be.
I liked the Olympic White (Fender) color combo with the mint pickguard but the paint job was terrible. Vast improvement. How many hours do you put in on a job like this one?
That is a beautiful thing there by the end. Nice work - I guess a refret is in the near future though
Nevermind, model SG-2, it is the same model Link Wray played.
Great restoration! What type of paint stripper did you use to take off the white paint? I have a fender that I need to remove the paint to get to the original paint. I do not want to damage the original paint.
All frets dented and he polished and re used them anyway….oh my god!
You gotta use a better painting system.
And use clear coat.
what model Yamaha is this? Link Wray played one very similar. Nicely designed vibrato mechanism and pickups etc.
YAMAHA SG-2. One of Yamaha's oldest electric guitar models.
Link Wray played one of these if I'm not mistaken.
Wow. Thank you. Early competition for the Jaguar?
Man that is a wonky trem system.
Hi. You forgot to crown the frets. Some of them have play wear.
should've refret it. It's too thin for crowning anyways.
Any particular reason you didn't refret the thing? Only other complaint I'd have is not sanding back the finish to get a flat mirror shine. Otherwise, really nice work.
Awesome Job! Which masking tape are you using? Seems different from the ones we have here in my country. Do you have the link to buy it? Thanks!
are those nylon roller saddles? should have lubed the bearings while you had it apart?
where do you find these? I'd like to do a restoration project aswell. Also there are currently some really cheap guitars from the former USSR that need restoration, ever considered checking one out? Love your restorations!
Fantastic 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙋🏻♂️🎸🔥🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷❤️
Like first then enjoy the video
I don't like to leave a negative comment, but I hope You will take this as a critique and not an attack. I am sorry in advance!
So it was a great restoration, however i think you have a few things to work on.
First is painting, it's bumpy. You should really use less paint in one layer and instead do more layers. Between layers You should sand.
Second is the pickguard. It drives me crazy. You removed so much material from the top layes that the black layer started to show through. At this point You should have bought a fresh pickguard material and cut out the pattern. The pickup covers were left yellow. I mean it would have looked way better if both would have stayed yellow.
Third thing is the fretjob. Those trenches in the fretwires are deeper than the Marianna Trench. If that is not an indicator for needing a fretjob, I don't know what is. The fingerboard also needs a good sanding and refinish, but You would've needed to remove the frets for that.
I know that the point of these restorations is to preserve as much as possible, but what needs to go, needs to go.
Why not a refret??? Another episode for the refret I suppose?
You didn't replace the bad frets?
God, I love that. (All except the droopy headstock end). If someone did a reissue I would be all over it.
👌👍👍👍
What was the first song in the trial
Los trastes deberian haber sido cambiados
Great job, bud! What's the tune at 39:06?
Groody! 😂
Guapa la nipona
Orange peel... barf.
All that work and didnt do a fret job????? Thats whack!!
You did a terrible job on the frets, unfortunately.
Wow, both ugly and shit sounding, thanks Yamaha for giving us so many other great guitars to chose from, so we didn't have to accept this monstrosity as their only venture into the guitar world.
Though, I must say that you did a beautiful restoration of a total turd instrument, excellent work.
