  • This video focusses on clematis viticella and encourages gardeners, who may be put off by the reputation of some clematis, to consider the benefits of using this very hardy and reliable group of clematis to extend the period and range of colour in their gardens. Unfussy, easy to grow, simple to prune - what’s not to like about this wonderful group of clematis?

For precisely that reason I had no clematis but after watching Paul T on YT. I bought an evergreen 'Avalanche', Then I found supermarket rejects, cheap enough to take a chance, for pots in sheltered places and now have 17: I'm hooked (and climbing!), my wild garden will be full of colour; no elegant structures but lots of rampant hedge and tress.

Thank you Ken, I have been trying to identify a clematis that is growing next to the side kitchen door at the new place and google lens is convinced its passion flower! It's Purpurea Plena Elegans ! I knew if I searched on your channel I'd find it - just brilliant thank you so much, your vast knowledge is much appreciated, I had thought it was a cut down in Winter group, the flowers are small and it's only just started flowering a few wks ago and I thought it looked like a Viticella so I must be learning something from you :) Thanks again and take care.

Hi Ken, I wonder if you could advise me. I've just erected a rustic rose arch and plan to grow up it two short pink scented climbers, one on either side.. I'd like to plant a clematis with each one. I was thinking of a Group 3 clematis (to make the Winter tidy up of the roses and clematis easier) so possibly a Summer flowering clematis and a later flowering viticella to extend the season. However, whilst I'd like the clematis to grow to about 8' or so, I don't want vigorous forms that would smother the roses. So would you be able to recommend two clematis, with restrained growth, in either blue or purple, deep pink, or white to complement my two roses. Many thanks.PS. Look forward to another of your videos in due course.

My apologies for not replying earlier. What you propose to do sounds like a good idea, Howe ver, I am reluctant to suggest varieties for you because, depending where you live , some varieties are easier to find than others. May I suggest that you look on the web site Clematis on the Web and go through the selection of viticellas and summer flowering clematis. There you will find a wide variety of possibilities. Good luck
      Ken

Hi Ken we have a sheltered garden, however the fence panels id wish to position Vitcella is more east facing into our back garden/ patio area so the position get the morning sun. The garden in general is quite sunny and above average temperatures as sheltered . I was wondering if Vitcello would be suitable for position i am considering? Thanks

@@johnnyenglish7134 hi Jonny. In general viticellas are bomb proof. No clematis wilt or difficulties to grow . I suggest you go for it and choose varieties that are well proven. Check out Clematis on the Web for the best viticellas for you to plant.
