Hi Doug & Stacy, I'm working on the garden part of my homesteading adventure. I was promised a mobile home before I arrived but it fell through and so I'm making do with 560 sq feet in a barn building right now. It's a good shelter and has a metal roof, I'm very happy. Right now my garden is living in containers. It's all about taking steps toward where you or I want to go. One step at a time and seeing the progress unfold is an amazing and wonderful adventure. Safe travels and many blessings. Homestead Wheelie happy for my blessings is making progress. Thank you for all of the information.

You have a fantastic philosophy. The aging in place is a going to be very beneficial to you. Growing flowers can provide food uses as well. Marigolds, basil flowers and cilantro flowers can be eaten. Nice place you have there.

Saw your Life without electricity video with Brad. Four years ago, I left Seattle and moved in with my grandparents on their five acre farm. I now have four generations living together. I planted a large garden and have been raising chickens and ducks. I'd like to go off grid but I'm not there yet. Working towards my goal of living a self sustainable life. It all takes time and work but each day I make progress. Looking forward to learning from your videos as well. Cheers!

What a beautiful piece of property. If you want to clean out the scrub, get some goats. Maybe I commented on it before but I'll do so again. In the area of Lower Newton Falls, NJ are the remnants of farms that predate the Revolution with neat thrown stone walls to separate the pastures. Some monied folks moved in and bought up these non-operating farms, they brought in a licensed German shepherd, gave him a small 3 BR house (all fixed up PROPERLY), 250 sheep and about six goats along with hundreds of feet of movable electric fencing. The shepherd kept the flocks moving from area to area while the goats ate all the viney stuff including poison ivy. I saw it about four years after he started and now understand how some of those beautiful English/ Scottish estates are kept in such beautiful condition. What the owners have done appears to be exactly what you have done: Make a plan and work your plan.Thank you for sharing it with us that are not homesteaders.

Nice Video! We have just purchased 13 secluded acres in NW Pa. All but about 2.5 acres are woods and deer trails. With our family, we envision having a semi cleared central pavilion to use at regular yearly intervals. We are both in/approaching 60 and have background of parents who grew & canned annually, as part of life. We are craving a return to this lifestyle and see this investment as a step in that direction.

The Midwest is amazing. I lived 20 years 100 miles West of Wichita. Somewhat drier than where you are but still good productive land. Not many running creeks anymore due to all the irrigation pulling down the aquifer. You mentioned "hedge" or "Bois Darc". Amazing stuff and yes it will melt your stove. You say you haven't got any fruit off your apple trees. You know that most apples are not self pollinating and need a suitable "mate" in order to bear fruit. As you live in a remote are you wont get the cross pollination required. It is worth speaking to a local nursery to find the best match for your trees.

But age caught up with me and I sold it. I now live in a small town that allows animals and poultry. Turned the large back yard into raised fardens and two coops for 12 hens. You can take the women out of the farm but not the farm out of the women. 72 and still a farmer.

hi Doug and Stacey I was just thinking about your fruit trees and I remember something about the French using hoops and staking are there apple trees and fruit trees to get a better yield and also the tree gets a better proportion of sunlight and on the plus side they are closer to the ground for picking maybe something you might want to check out, another traditional Victorian methods where to Stake the fruit tree to a brick wall where the heat permeate back into the trees during the evening or training it around a wire fence this food for thought all the best Chris

That is the question everyone wants to know. I'm in the corn belt metropolitan peppered area and open space like that cost 8k to 15k an acre on average. Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin. 5k an acre min. for large properties.
