The "Pier Pressure" episode is the one that made me realize how special this show was, a fake drug deal precipitated by a real one that culminated in the message "and thats why you don't teach your son lessons" . Brilliant

Buster is the most hilarious character of the series. Him competing with Annyong for the love of Mother is one of the best moments of the show.

Okay, but how do you know that your favorite actors haven't done the same thing but haven't been called out on it. Are we going to suddenly deny that shows like the cosby show were bad, or that they couldn't have taught people anything because of what an actor did? Do you stop following a band or a sports team because a member beat his wife? Because you can pretty much guarantee that with the number of players on each sports team, statistically, one of them has to have beaten a spouse, been involved in dog fighting, gang shit, drug shit or other major character flaw/issues and crimes.

I heard a different story of Will Arnett's audition: that he played it really sleazy, but was told to play it again as if he thinks he's a really nice guy who has no idea that what he says is appalling.
Mark Boyes his character is sleazy, but ditzy too lol

Man.. Cross was the best in Scary Movie 2 and he was in MIB.. Also cross has said in many interviews that the producer didn’t want him to wear facial hair, a hat, or puffy shirts… David fought all of that and in the first episode he has a moustache, bandana, and a pirate shirt… Best story ever

Superbad co-writer Evan Goldberg didn't stop watching Arrested Development because he thought Cera was terrible or he didn't like him. He stopped watching so that he wouldn't identify Cera with the George Michael character and end up writing his Superbad character the same way. 5:01

i'm disappointed with how much netflix's take on arrested development made me dislike tobias. i feel like not putting him in enough situations with the other main cast and choosing to focus on him, his son, and debrie made his actions and dialogue more unfunny :( david cross is fantastic as tobias and nails it perfectly despite not being given the best script later on
They also ruined Michael's character, unfortunately.

I watched for 20 minutes before I found this is only about season one.
I also loved the Happy Days reference when Zuckercorn jumps over a dead shark on some docks by the ocean. Subtle....but hilarious!

The individual who created the show was inspired by The Godfather AKA The Sopranos family, if you think about it they had two cousins that had incest relationship, the father of the family didn't trust the oldest son with the responsibilities of the family so he gave it to the younger son, AKA Michael in Arrested Development
Portia de Rossi is fantastic in "Better off Ted" which is a fantastic comedy that has an 8.2 on Imdb - and for good reason. Of course, it's another comedy that was so good it was cancelled - this time after only one season.
And Jessica Walter was not "even" in a Clint Eastwood movie. She was in a GREAT Clint Eastwood movie that has a 7.0 on Imdb - "Play Misty for me" is an excellent film. Should have higher than a 7.0.
Jessica Walter was superb in Play Misty for Me (1971). It was hard watching it not thinking her of being a young Lucille there. Also the year of release of the movie suggests to me that Clint Eastwood was Buster's real father.

I'm mad at myself for not discovering the show until the 5th season came out.
It always amuses me when the people who got me into AD say the Netflix seasons were crap. I ask them how many time they watched it and they reply once. I then ask them what they told me was one of the best bits about the show... The jokes you picked up on during rewatches. They then realise they have made a huge mistake!

absolutely fantastic research and script. you really dove deep into what made this show great and created a window into the show's composition. There were a couple instances where your diction and speed made it difficult to understand what you were saying and i feel there were a few edits where you didn't leave enough time to focus on what you had cut to. overall i found this video essay engaging and informative and look forward to watching more of your content!
I enjoyed this, now I want to watch seasons 1-3 all over again. 4 and 5, sadly never again.
TJ Wash Come on, 4 and 5 are still better than most comedies on TV currently.
4 & 5 are fine, the comedic timing and joke filled scenes are still there, the plots are a little more out there (particularly with season 4) but a lot of that has to do with scheduling issues. which they make into a joke itself in season 5.
Edgy Teenager 33 I haven’t had a tv in 8 years, I will take your word for it about current shows because they were all totally bad then, I’m sure they’re worse now. I just didn’t laugh through most of seasons 4 and 5, and I laughed continuously through every episode 1-3. I’ll try again, maybe I was in a bad mood.

development arrested I’ll revisit them, maybe it will click. Most sit coms might make me smile, but rarely an actual laugh. Seasons 1-3 made me belly laugh every episode, I guess I had my hopes up for that, and it just didn’t happen

one of Portia De Rossi's bet roles was Veronica Palmer in Better Off Ted. That show also only got a few seasons and was cancelled way before it's time, and was absolutely BRILLIANTLY funny. She was one of the best parts of the show!

This show was way too good for its time
1. Banana stand is said to be on balboa island, but it’s actually shot on the sidewalk in front of Marina Del Rey docks (I live a mile from balboa island and noticed it looked nothing like it does down there)
2. A lot of season 4 is set on uc Irvine campus, but it’s not UCI, it’s Occidental (I went to Uci, so noticed immediately it wasn’t the campus)
3. Bren center, where the blu man group performed, does exist on UCI campus
4. Jeffery Tambor is a nice guy in person, met him while at a restaurant on sunset.

Jeffrey Tambor also played many multiple characters on Three's Company also the next door neighbor on The Ropers
