      one mile run
      100 pull ups

      300 squats
      one mile run.

Having gone from a 47 year old, 5 foot 7 inch, 14 .5 stone blob in August last year to 11 stone and 20 mins 30 secs at a parkrun now, I can safely say that need to average over 15kph for 5km ain't easy. Entertaining video! Think you hit the nail on the head when mentioning his size and weight. From my experience, if you've done a reasonable amount of running in the past, providing you keep yourself active and don't gain the weight you can still run reasonably well off doing less training (although it becomes more difficult with age). When you're a bigger guy it's much harder to get and stay running fit. After 12 years off myself, the weight is the main thing holding me back from running close to the times I once did

    You've been a big reason for my recent decision to get fit and healthy again in my late 30's, so thanks for the inspiration! I mainly indoor row on the concept 2 in my pain cave. Even though i'm not 6' 2", it's still been my fav activity since my early 20's gym bro days.
    A few years ago i bought a PaddleSport Training paddle adapter kit for it to add some rotational training in the form of paddling, which has been a lot of fun.
    Stick with me, I'm getting to the point. Recently I watched a video where you did a race on a stand up paddleboard, which looked a lot of fun, so the other day I bought an amazon special side to side wobble board (+ grip tape on the floor to stop any unwanted rotation) which now allows me to stand up and paddle! Great fun! Adds a huge core/balance component that i was missing.
    I'd recommend trying it, especially if you're doing more SUP races. Perhaps PaddleSport Training would even send you a free one. If nothing else you could probably squeeze a video or two out of it.
    Stay hard..

    • @chrisgilligan4968
      @chrisgilligan4968 Před 9 měsíci +1

      For sure maintaining a consistent pace at your threshold is the best route to running your best times. Figuring out what your threshold pace is for a given distance and practicing running that pace is a critical piece to improving. The longer the race, the more important pacing becomes. Mark was not super consistent with his pacing in attempt #2, but because the event is only 5k you can get away with some variance. If he would have been able to run right on 3:48 /km for all 5 it would give him his best chance at breaking the 19 minute barrier...practicing and getting the feel of how fast your feet turnover, and your breathing at that pace helps you to execute the pace out on the course. There are some watches now that have a pacer feature that shows you visually if you are ahead of, or behind a virtual pacer...the good part of that is that it is GPS based and you get real time data every step, not just at the km or mile markers.

    • @mjowsey

      @@chrisgilligan4968 watches are great for pacing. Keeping up with another human is even better. A lot of people at parkrun run very consistently week after week. Immensely impressed by Zuckerberg's pace and any other person making their legs do that pace at my height. Seeing 30-something women at 5'3" run regular 4:40s blows my mind. I've found that doing a lot of zone 2 and now pushing my arse up mountains when trail running has helped my flat run pace by 15 sec/km. Next step: sleep more. DO HARD THINGS!

      My best friend got me into running. She's 44 and 4'11" (only weighs 40kg though). She runs 5ks sub 19 minutes, half marathons in 1h25 and has also run a number of ultra trails and mostly finished on the podium in those. Amazing lady.

    I’m 70 now but in my 30s I did some fun runs over about 5km. I was doing 4 min km which I thought was reasonable. I hardly used to run at all but I was doing competitive cycling and pretty fit. After each run I found it difficult to walk for a few days. By the time the next run came around I was just coming good muscle wise. Then I’d run and I’d go through the whole thing again.

      Crossfit is notorious for inflating runners pace and distance. I watched an event last year and the paces they talked about runners had were laughable just by measuring yourself. They inflated their running speed often up to 30sec less /km.

  • @FitAfter50
    @FitAfter50 Před 9 měsíci

    Facebook speed is a new thing.
    Funny how successful A type personalities like you have a difficult time keeping a good, honest and steady pace. When I coached triathlon full of $10k bikes attached to Porsches, keeping the A types in check was by far the most difficult.
    With all the tech it should be easy but the orangutang almost always took over and the end of the race was a death march despite all the promises prior to the race.
    Nice running man.
    After some injuries I am finally getting back into running. Did a hilly 5 miles the other day at 8min/mile pace. Felt alive!
