- This week, we're making a scrappy wrist pincushion out of a couple of small pieces of leftover fabric and a few other things that I bet you have close by.
SUPPLIES:
Fabric for pincushion: 2.5" x 8.5"
Fabric for strap: 4" x 10.5"
Velcro - 3/4" or 1" wide
Pellon 906 - small piece - mine was 7/8" x 9", but it's not absolutely necessary for finished project. If you have it, feel free to use it, but if you don't, just leave it out.
Small amount of Polyfil or quilt batting to fill pincushion
Cardboard from packaging
Thread, needle , scissors and sewing machine

I have been sewing for many years but today I learned a new way to thread a needle. Plus I may never knot thread again. You are never too old to learn something new.
Hi Lupie! Isn’t it fun to learn new ways to do things that we already knew how to do? I remember learning that way of “not using a knot”, when learning to cross stitch back in the mid ‘80s. I can’t even remember who showed me, but I was amazed and couldn’t believe that I hadn’t thought of it before. Also, if you need a double piece of thread, it’s much easier to thread your needle with that loop end than it is to try to put 2 threads through the eye of the needle. Nanni Bee (love your username, btw), yes I used to keep a few different pin cushions around, but I was dropping them all over the floor and then having to pick those up. That’s when I came up with the idea for the wrist pin cushion to keep them handy and it does. I love mine. It is quite old now and I think I’ve poked too many holes in the cardboard over the and I probably should make myself a new one. Well, I guess I made two for the tutorial , so I might be able to find one lying around someplace, lol!

I was thinking of adding plastic from those cheapee cutting boards in the base instead of cardboard. Didnt get around to making one today. Im making microwave bowl cozies atm. I have 57 prepped. Its seems to be taking a loooong time,but I need to restock for the next market day in June.

i also loved your explanation of threading the needle through the loop to avoid a knot. i had seen this on instagram some time back, but could not figure it out, so thanks! I will start using this trick this when sewing buttons.

A follow up, I’ve made 2 pin cushions and a scrappy mat large enough to use as a mat for my sewing machine. It is so much fun and they come together so quick!

Thanks for the inspiration and instructions. I made one cushion using your measurements and made another a bit larger (cut cushion piece 3.5x8.5). I stuffed with wool roving so the pins will stay sharp. I'm a garment sewist so I like a lot of pins on my wrist.

Nice idea. I made one about the same size but I wrapped it around the base of my machine. I use this every time I sew too. I collect pin cushions and love all the different kinds you can make. Another scrap buster!

It’s funny you mention that it wraps around your machine, as when I was a little girl my great grandmother had one around her singer treadle sewing machine and a few years ago I had one around the base of my old Brother machine, just how you mentioned it. Hi, I've only just seen this and have found it to be great. I make things for a Hedgehog Rescue to help with funds and have made pin cushions previously but these are so easy, yet look fantastic.
Thanks for the tip re backstitching along the Velcro when stitching in place. I've never thought to do that before. As I struggle a bit with handsewing now (arthritis in hands), I sewed the pouch onto the strap before sewing the sides of the strap. Actually, it made it easier to turn the pocket as the straps could be pulled through. So, now only need to sew the end of the pouch, after stuffing it. So easy and so very quick. Ideal for the Hedgehogs :) Thanks so much

I’ve made quite a few of these overtime and have changed and tried many different methods, one very similar to what you mention. (after video, lol) A few of my other subscribers have made various changes, as well. Of course I suppose that’s how things go, we change as we make more of them or figure out a newer or easier way that works best for us. I am happy to hear your way, thank you for sharing that and sorry for the arthritis. I have RA, sometimes it bothers me more than other times. Also, I apologize for the delay in response, but I’ve been very sick, so I’m playing catch up.

Yes, I'm sure there will be lots of variations flying around, as different people have an idea re how to make it easier, one way or another. One of the beauties of sewing is that one can think 'outside the box' and adapt :)
I just had a chance to watch this video and I really enjoyed it. I have been wanting to sew one of these wrist pin cushions since forever, so I’m glad you created this tutorial. It sounds like you had a fabulous Easter, Nancy! A perfect family day, all around. Here, it was just a quiet day with Johnny and I. I cooked a small ham, a few potatoes and carrots and that was about it. I did get some sewing done, but other than that it was just a quiet day. I bet you’re going to make that pincushion, because there’s no zipper, ha ha! You knew I had to tease you about that, right? Lol. I’m glad you feel like you’re sitting with a friend because that’s definitely how I feel when I’m making the videos. Finally, I have got to listen/watch this while I sew on one of my projects. This was a good project. When I need a wrist pin cushion is when I make clothing items...which I seldom make now.

I’m loving this idea! I bought a magnetic one off Amazon and it’s terrible and kept thinking surely I can just make one and this has taken the thinking out of it for me! Thankyou!
I understand what you mean about buying things without being able to check them out fully. It’s so hard when we can only see them and not actually touch them to see if they’re something that we really want. Something I would suggest when you make your pincushion, if you want to, is that to use a piece of plastic instead of the cardboard. I totally forgot to mention this in the video. You could use any type of plastic food container that you could cut out or maybe something like what we have here at dollar tree, which is a disposable cutting mat that they sell (for cutting veggies, etc). Aww, you're so sweet! I'm glad you liked the video! I made one years ago to go around my vintage Singer, as I could remember my grandmother always having one around hers, too. I used Velcro to fasten that one, but it was fuller and a bit different than the wrist type. I hope you have fun!

And under the pins I used some small plastic dividers that came out my Tackle/sewing box
Good morning Doris! You're very welcome! A lot of people did variations of them, that doesn't bother me a bit. I love for people to use their own creativity and make it their own. I also now ise thin, flexible plastic underneath the batting, Although the one I made with food boxes is still working well, even though I have washed it. I've still never been poked, but i have changed to plastic in all my newer ones.
Marie: after a lifetime of creating, I learned something new from this😳🤔 how you thread your needle AND tie your not on both ends👏👏👏 whodathunk?!!🤪 I have always loved to sew and other crafts! can’t see myself not doing it. ❤️😀

When I first started CZcams a few months ago, I made a list of all the tutorials that I could think of that I wanted to film and this wrist pin cushion was near the top. But, somewhere in my first 2-4 videos, I had three or four viewers comment and/or message & email me about the pincushion that I was wearing on my wrist and they asked me if I would make a tutorial showing how I made it. I told them it was coming up soon and I actually filmed it before I had planned to. I think they make a great sewing accessory and they really aren’t hard to make. It’s easily the item I used most often!

I am new to your videos …this is the first one … this was well explained! I made one before , it doesn’t fit me so nicely ….your version probably would because of your many tips , especially not sewing the top to the end . That extra space creates flexibility for the band to curve around the wrist much nicer.
Your band is sturdier because of the interfacing and your Velcro placement is much more thought out .

I'm a longarmer and have worn out a couple of wrist pin cushions. The ones I use are larger, but I think it will be easy enough to sew up a new one for myself. Shoot, maybe I'll make a couple and match the quilt of the day or my shirt. Okay, probably not, but it's a thought. Thank you so much for the tutorial. I would way rather choose my own fabrics. I haven't had a choice in my previous pin cushions. Can't wait to give it a go.

I was shown a trick when I was very young that if you have a dull needle you just swipe the tip parallel to your scalp, and it sharpens it up. I’ve used this trick throughout my life, never hurting myself as I’m careful, and gentle.

This has been a very popular video and a lot of people have made them I did make a change since this video, though. I buy the plastic disposable cutting boards at the Dollar Tree and cut a small piece of that, instead of the cardboard.
The ruff piece of velcro is called the 'hooks', the soft is referred to as the 'loop'. When I made mine, I used a piece of no roll elastic since I wasn't able to tighten the velcro snug enough. Thanks for your tutorial!

Hi Mike! Thanks so much for playing along in our little game! That’s great that you sew a variety of items. I don’t sew clothing, although I did sew a sweatshirt when I was in high school. It was in Home Ec class and we had to choose a piece of clothing to sew and I picked out a pattern for a sweatshirt. My mother had sewed a lot of our clothes when we were kids, so she had a lot of experience, and she told me not to start off with something stretchy and that I would probably have a hard time with it. But what teenager ever listened to their parents? I bought the pattern and fabric and of course, I had a terrible time making that thing and I never tried making another piece of clothing., lol.

The only things I sew are hand stitched. It takes a lot longer but it is so relaxing.

I have done this pin cushion and I used heavy plastic found cardboard even double was not enough. I also put elastic for the band much better for my waist is very small
I’m so glad you made it work for you 💕. I still have (and use) my original ones made with cardboard, but now, I make them with the thin, plastic disposable cutting boards from Dollar Tree.

I spy with my little eye some minky in the corner! Right in front of me is yup a minky stash.I like the idea of a wrist pin cushion,we sew in our kitchen ,and our dog loves to find our dropped pins and chew on them. Iam like are you kidding me,when did i drop another pin.So i count the pins out and in.She also love our bobbins grrrrrrr.Any how time to get to bed.Easters calorie count was probably 3000 or more,sleep is the last thing i need but if i stay up the cake will start calling me :)
That’s so funny that you noticed the minky fabric, Lorraine. I just said to my husband last night that I hope our daughter doesn’t spy what’s in the corner of the camera lens, because it’s for her baby shower (notice I used the word “spy”) . And then I said “no, I don’t think anyone will notice that.” So I just woke up and went to read the comments, saw yours and I actually started laughing out loud, because you spied the Minky fabric. 😂😅. Also, yesterday I filmed for an upcoming What’s Up Wednesday by showing the minky and PUL fabric I bought the other day. It’s my first time buying minky and I was so excited!
Your dog gets into your pins?!? Our cat does that, but I didn’t think about a dog doing the same! Last year, when she was a kitten, she would get up on my sewing area (which was in the dining room at the time), and she would pull the pins out of my wrist pincushion one by one, with her mouth. She would have them strewn all over the place. She’s obsessed with bobbins, too! I can’t leave a bobbin anywhere, because she just won’t leave them alone. She does love to chase them as they roll across the floor though, and it’s kinda cute. I’m just afraid she’s going to swallow a pin. Before I moved my sewing area to an upstairs spare bedroom, I always had to throw a quilt over my sewing area at night, so that she couldn’t get into everything. I had some bobbins that were colored in pastels that I purchased that didn’t end up fitting in my machine and I do let her play with those. At first I wondered if this was a good idea, but she actually leaves my other ones alone now. Calories? I can’t even go there! Lol. Take care and thanks for watching and commenting on my video. I was wondering if using a dab of Fabric Glue on the back of the pin cushion and the half way point of the strap to hold it stead in place while you stitch?

I suppose that would probably work. I say “suppose” because I have never tried fabric glue. But if you try it, please let me know, as I’m very interested in that. When I made my first one, I just stuck a pin down and through it to hold it in place, but your idea would certainly hold it better, from the sounds of it.

Hi Marie! Thanks for the video, it was very informative. I would just like to ask you if you have used elastic for the wrist instead of the velcro? I find velcro annoying as it catches onto other fabric and makes a mess. I know how to do the elastic part, but, I'm wondering if it will interfere with centering the pin cushion? Thank you
Hello! Actually, I haven't ever had it catch any threads or fabric. I suppose if I had cut it longer, it might, but I haven't had any issues with it. I suppose you could use elastic, and I don't see why it wouldn't work. When made the way I showed in the video, one piece of Velcro overlaps the other. So it's all covered and isn't open to grabbing anything. 🥰 thanks so much for your question/comment
Love this tutorial - making my second one today. The only part I’m having a problem with is sewing through the cardboard - my needle doesn’t want to ‘bend’ back through to catch the strap … do you have any tips on this and/or do you recommend a specific type of needle? Many thanks x
Hello! Thank you so much for watching my tutorial and for your question. I don’t sew through the actual cardboard… I’m only catching the fabric that is right next to the cardboard… I hope that makes sense. My wording in the video is probably confusing, knowing me, lol. It’s been quite a while since I made this tutorial , so my memory is a bit sketchy, to say the least. I have changed a bit how I make this now. Instead of using cardboard pieces, I use the disposable chopping mats from the Dollar Tree (one layer of it) cut into the same size and shape as I would the cardboard. I will leave a link at the end of this comment n case you might like to give it a try, too. I hope that I was of some help, but please let me know if I can do anything else. Hi Marie. I love to make quilts.. 4 quilts so far. 3 of them are scrappy. I've given them to people I know and love.. its called one big hug. I'm also working on a scrap quilt for me ,middle piece is 36in by 36 in. I've got 3 more sections to attach on they are each about Size of placement. It's true thst scraps of fabric bring us back when we bought the material and used it in different projects. I've made key chains and book marks.. I've wanted to make a project bag... recently I've made and gifted grocery totes. Kept 3 for myself. Now I'd loveto make 4 lap quilts for chemo patients. And 4 for Nicu... take care. Hugs

Maybe double-sided upholstery tape and then just tack the corners?? I know that when it gets hard to push the needles through it leaves dents in my fingers. I do have a thimble but it's not my favorite thing to use. Since I've got some arthritis in my hands I shy away from tougher sewing projects.

Hi Mary! I had the idea for the ironing mat and I told my husband about it. He came into the sewing on one day with all the supplies and while I directed him, he put it together. He probably could’ve done it on his own, but I was the supervisor, lol! I plan to feature it on an upcoming What’s Up Wednesday and show it more in depth and just kind of tell what we made it out of. It’s one of those things that can be made out of many different items. I love it and don’t know what I did before I had it. Well, I guess I used the ironing board, ha ha. But it truly does make things so much easier.

How did you determine the length of your darts to be two-and-a-half in when the fabric was originally 13 in square and the bottom of the pie plate was eight and a half inches?
Hi! I noticed this was under the pincushion video, but I believe you’re talking about my tutorial for a pie plate cozy. I am definitely a person who is just “winging it” most of the time, ha ha. Usually what I do is try something out with a measurement and if it’s close, I adjust it to fit my need. Sometimes, I’m way off and I have to re-sew or re-cut. I really don’t remember how I came up with it as it’s been a while, but I do know that I had to play around with my measurement a bit before I got it to fit.

Hello Jennifer and welcome to my channel! Thank you so much for coming over and watching. I appreciate your comment. I don’t really remember exactly which needle size I used, but generally I would say it was probably about 1.75 inches long (if that helps), because I would’ve had to have had something long enough to get around there. It can be a little tricky to get it started, but once you get going, it’s clear sailing. Those have been very popular. A lot of people on my Facebook group have made those. I have one lady making one for each of the ladies in her quilting guild!
You said you wash yours? How does the cardboard stand up to the washing?

A friend gave me a large amt. of uncarded wool. Could I stuff the pincushion with the wool instead of polyfiller.

It will fit quite a variety, but I would have to be upstairs to measure it. It will fit from really small (child size) to very large (large men's wrist size, I'd guess) because of the way the Velcro is put on there. I will measure it later and come back and reply again to this topic.

Hi Sue! This has been quite a popular tutorial, as a lot of people like using a wrist pin cushion. I made it one day because I simply couldn't stand picking my regular pin cushion up off the floor one more time, haha.

It might be important, but it’s not quite everything. I think it’s more important to finish a project once we started, no matter what color thread we’ve used. You should be proud of yourself, I am!
Shouldn’t the soft/fuzzy side be next to your skin?
I’m not sure exactly what you mean, but I’m assuming you’re asking if the fabric or the cardboard side should be against your skin. And it should be the cardboard side, because when you pop the pins in, the cardboard keeps it from poking your skin. I hope that I’ve explained it well. @@MariesScrappyCreations no, the Velcro. It looked like you had the scratchey (hook) side so it would be on top of the loop/soft side when fastened, which would scratch.
@@lcsd863 No, it all turns out so that the fabric is against the skin, not the velcro. I probably should have shown it on after I made it, but I saw others who had made it who posted on our Facebook group, so it turned out fine. Sorry for any confusion.
