    Primary purpose of spoilers is the reduce lift and are used in conjunction with ailerons to roll the aircraft and also to dump lift on touchdown ensuring aircraft remains on ground. The braking effect is secondary.

      Not necessarily, have you seen that massive handle in the cockpit near the captain that has speed brake written on it? At relatively high altitudes and high speeds, they are primarily used as speed brakes. They are context-appropriate devices used for different things at different stages of the flight/configuration. What you said is correct apart from the last sentence. The braking effect can be the primary use.

      @@BrianMcCann421 maybe all that u guyz said are primary uses neither one of them are secondary

      @@epichax11 The thrust reversers, if the aircraft are equipped with them, are the primary braking system. They're the most effective by diverting some of the bypass air forward so the engine is essentially thrusting forward. The foot brakes are secondary, but are helped by the spoilers which disrupt all the wings lift so the full weight of the aircraft can bear down on the wheels, making the wheel brakes more effective.

      @Hk-uw8my Před rokem

      @@killerdoxen The primary braking force of an airliner during landing comes from the brakes on the landing gear ( around 80%). The thrust reversers braking force only reduces the stopping distance by a little bit in general, they might be really useful only when the landing gear brakes are less effective, on wet / contaminated runways for example.
      Otherwise, on dry runways , thrust reversers are just used to reduce the wear and /or temperatures on the brakes , as their extra stopping power allows the airplane to be more gentle on the brakes for the same deceleration rate.

    With all due respect, the spoilers also deaden the lift from wings once main gears make contact on the ground and the thrust reverse cowlings open shifting thrust forward to help reduce speed to approximately 80 knots so the pilot can brake by pushing both rudder pedals forward for braking to taxi.

    Interesting to watch the spoilers move with the Ailerons when wing is going down. I wonder if the flaps do the same when it’s going up?

    • @killerdoxen
      @killerdoxen Před 2 lety +3

      No. The flaps are only used during takeoff and landing to decrease the stall speed (the speed at which the wing fails to generate lift).

      The spoilers move up on the down going wing to create extra drag to assist the aircraft to roll (or bank if you like). They also assist with slowing down and braking during approach and landing.
