  • Here is a lovely rendition of Charles Gounod's "Ave Maria" ("Hail Mary") as played on one of our 1905 18 1/2 inch Mira Concert Grand console music boxes. I have always enjoyed listening to the piece on this particular music box as it never fails to leave me speechless. I have played this same selection on music box discs from my collection on our 20 1/2 inch Olympia music box, 15 1/2 inch Reginaphone and 17 1/4 inch Stella and this particular rendiion on this box produces the finest rendition of all of them. Thanks for stopping in.

Musical boxes are magical, but also a bit sad. It's like "canned" emotions. Crystal clear and vibrant, but strangely lifeless.

Ehh, entirely electronic music, never "played" music exists and is often beautiful and full of emotion.
Music boxes are in the same realm, but they are generally not used in innovative ways. If you want some food for thought, check out Wintergatan's "Marble Machine." The device has manual elements, but it's a true beauty of automated music performance.
EDIT: mitxela "More MIDI madness" here on CZcams also has some interesting, albeit silly, ideas.

I can picture people gathered around this instrument in an old Victorian living room, the logs in the fireplace crackling with Mom &Dad sitting in the overstuffed chairs and the red velvet curtains behind them, us kinds on the large area rug. The gas lights flickering and the snow swirling outside the picture window.

To me, these antique music boxes provide a perfectly accurate revisitation of the sounds of the late 1800's and very early 1900's. There are very few things which can provide such an experience, putting you 'right there' yet again to enjoy it as it was (and still is). Oh, and let's not forget the artistic value of the machine itself, considering also just how much work went into building them, a much slower pace
