  • I got brand new Sierra Exhaust Manifolds (18-1953-2) and installed them on my Mercruiser 5.7L boat engine. I also install my Corsa Captain's Call Exhaust Diverters. They are an electrically controlled butterfly valve in the exhaust that reroutes exhaust through the hull. I replaced my cap and rotor with Quicksilver kit (805759Q3) and finally got to start the new engine!!

    The 2004 boat I have now with Multi Port Injection makes all the difference in the world when it comes to both ease of starting, power and throttle response. My old boat is 1990 Sea Ray BR160 16’ 4 cylinder with a 2 barrel carb and after owning that boat for 21 years I definitely will not go back to a carburetor again.

      I wish my boat was EFI. The quadrajet it has is generally known to be reliable but they aren't performers. They don't have much power compared to EFI sadly. I haven't had any issues with the carb on this boat yet thankfully.

      @@605BOLTMy dad was a Holly Carb guy and used to call Quadrajet “Quadrajunk.” He hated working on those carbs so he would pay for a Holley. I used to laugh until I had to work on one myself. You are right about them being dependable. Like anything they are dependable but not known as performance carbs. But what the hell. As long as it runs and doesn’t give you trouble put gas in it and go. I building a new engine not because I need one but more as a tribute to my dad and to have my good friend and his 14 y/o son help me and to give the young man a chance to get grease under his nails and to turn wrenches. I have a daughter and although she has helped me work on my cars I don’t think she would be all in on an engine build now that she is 28. 😂

    Question: where did you find a service manual. I have a 97’ and It was already torn down when I bought it so I’m having a fun time putting it back together lol

      Oof that sounds like a fun project haha. The manual I bought for this was SELOC brand. Similar to this...

    I’m replacing the hardware on the inside of my captains call on one side this winter. Was taking the riser off easy? I don’t know the story of your boat but I assume you had to remove a cracked manifold? My boat has side exit so I’m not sure how to get that Y pipe out without taking the riser off. Not much wiggle room. Thanks for the advice!

    • @605BOLT
      @605BOLT  Před 2 lety

      I see. Ya it's super easy to get the riser off with the captains call. The rubber couplers allow for some flex so that you can get everything placed. If you're taking it apart for the first time I would drain the water first using the little drain plugs at the bottom of the manifolds then undo the four bolts for where the riser attaches to the manifold. Then I would remove the riser from the captain's call and then I would remove the captain's call. Don't really need to mess with the y pipe at all other than checking to make sure your flapper is present and sitting where it needs to. Hope that helps some. Hit me up here if you run into a jam. 👍

      @@605BOLT Thank you for the tips. My hardware is just freely spinning so I’m pretty sure the connecting bolts have snapped off from the flap. Will be a good winter project for sure.

      Dang. Always something with the boats. They're spendy little suckers so it worth the hassle if you can get them fixed. Good luck!

    I get this is an old vid but figured I'd share something with you if you never figured out why you had to move your plug wires. You timed the cam wrong when you put the motor back together. You did the obvious thing and aligned the timing dots on the chain sprockets so they faced each other. Made sense right? Well, it is wrong! In GM's infinite wisdom, they engineered it so both timing dots are supposed to be lined up BOTH POINTING TO THE 12:00 POSITION! Check your service manual.
    Ask me how I know this! Been there and did the EXACT same mistake! I never knew until a buddy was changing the cam in his truck and was following the service manual. He asked me to check his work and I thought he'd made a mistake. That is, until, he opened the manual and showed me how the cam was supposed to be timed. He was right!
    Immediately several motor builds of the ignition timing not being on the correct distributor posts made sense. They all ran fine but it never made sense why the wires didn't line up with the numbers molded into the caps...
    Thought I'd share having learned from the exact same mistake.
    Awesome job on the vids! Hope you are out enjoying your boat!

    Those exhaust manifold are a beeyatch to install. Heavy and awkward.

    • @605BOLT
      @605BOLT  Před rokem

      Yes. They are tough! And in my scenario the plugs won't come out without the manifolds coming off so having those plugs installed makes it worse. Don't want to slip and shear off one of the plugs. That would be bad!
