Well, there's good reason, but it's not so obvious. Love my backhoe on my 1025r, so glad I went ahead and added it when I bought my tractor. It’s been a huge help in my small landscape company in so many ways.
The videos are a great source of info. I told my wife 5 years ago I was going to buy a tractor to mow the lawn and came home with a 1025r with the loader and backhoe....... and no mower. I have since bought a 54d mower, but that tractor has been my best investment yet.
I appreciate and enjoy your videos. About a month ago, I bought a tractor with a backhoe. I haven't been about to use it as much as I like because of work. In the 10 hours I've been on it, most have been using the backhoe. I kept hearing, watching, and reading that backhoes were overrated. Far from the truth, and I love my backhoe! I got it all as one package with my tractor and loader.
About 10 years ago I bought a used BX and a new towable backhoe. This can be a good choice for people wanting a backhoe for personal use. I went with the Dirtmaster but there are other brands. A tractor mounted hoe may be better at roots and rocks but it has done everything I needed. Mostly sewers, water lines and ponds.
I priced out buying my tractor with a backhoe vs adding it later. Definitely makes more sense to bite the bullet and buy it up front than try to add it later.
If you bought a tractor from me I would sell the backhoe to you for cost just to sell the tractor.
You’ll never lose money investing in a backhoe I got a old 80s model Massey industrial purpose built backhoe couple years back from a county auction best $8500 I ever spent everyone in your family and friends list will appreciate you buying one haha and it will stay working as long as it’s visible hahaha

Don't use mine much, but really nice to have it when I need it. Using it this week end again to remove a bunch of stumps and dig a trench at a friends house. No one wants to hear the facts on SCT backhoes. But it is good that you put it out there for folks to understand. Thanks for sharing!

I bought my 2013 1025R Used in 2015 without the backhoe. I went to my dealer and ended up purchasing the entire kit including the backhoe, seat swivel, the power beyond kit, and subframe for right at $5,500, but this was in 2016. Installing the subframe and power beyond kit was much easier than I initially thought it would be.
I put on quite a few in my days with Deere. It was a lot more cost effective to order them in with the backhoe
Thanks for the points you made including in terms of buying a backhoe with your tractor at the time or front-end loader or mower deck!! I don't use machines quite this small but too many owners buy a new tractor or a used tractor figuring that later they'll get a backhoe or front loader and just don't realize all the issues involved with this. Agree with protecting the tractor and if you can park it inside. Even buying a small storage shed to protect these units from the elements is money well spent. Never understood those who spend bib bucks for these units and then don't even cover them with a $20 tarp and just let them sit there all winter long.
Always good content and wise advice. Most were like, you will never use it. It stays on my Kubota almost all the time. Even when I don’t plan to use it. It’s 1,000 pounds of ballast for the loader or grapple.
I added a used 260 backhoe to my 790. It works amazing. I did have to fabricate a subframe for the hoe to attach to. It was well worth it.
My recommendation that when removing and then installing your backhoe, make sure you remove it on a level surface if possible. What a pain to do if the ground is uneven!

And make sure it's a frame mounted backhoe. A 3pt isn't the way to go.
I got an NOS BH45 for my 4110, had to fabricate the whole subframe. Great setup but I should have brought a tractor with one already fitted! Great advice!
I have a 12 year old JD 4210 4wd compact utility tractor (with less than 500 hours on it) and last year found a (nearly) new JD 47 backhoe that would fit on it. (they no longer make one that will fit this tractor) It required removing the 3-point hitch to mount this permanently to the frame and had to install a new hydraulic control module with it. This compact backhoe only digs 6' deep but all our water lines are 3-4' deep so this is perfect. We've used it about 200 hours this past year and it has saved us tens of thou$and$ on rented or contracted equipment.
This past week we used it transplanting 10-15' tall trees from a volunteer grove to where we needed them for landscaping. We have a bucket on the loader but also bought the Brush Crusher Grapple you were pushing as we've used this little tractor clearing lots of brush and trees and digging stumps. I realize not everyone would need this, but it is a SWEET piece of equipment for our needs.
Of course, we can no longer use the 3-point attachments we had for the little tractor: small box blade, bushhog, finish mower, tiller, etc. but we have multiple larger Bad Boy zero turn mowers to maintain our 65-70 acres. And I have an 8' box blade and 7' bushhog for our 75hp Mahindra, so we weren't using the little tractor for maintaining roads, dikes, dams, etc.
These might not be for everyone (it obviously wasn't for the man who had this one sitting inside his barn for 12 years before we found it) but it has been a true joy for us to have. And we made up the price for the backhoe and the trip to IA to pick it up (I'm in OK) and the installation at the local JD dealer within the first month in just what we saved. My workers vie for who gets to run the little JD now after it had sat virtually unused for years.
Really well presented. I love my backhoe but you have to get it with the tractor because like the video says there is hours of install time. Taking it on and off is a challenge the first time but easier every time and worth every minute. I have 60 acres to take care of so need for a backhoe is a weekly process in the summer.

Learned the same thing when shopping for a tractor. Expensive or simply impossible to add BH later. Just got the right tractor with the right package right away. I like the robust steps on the stabilizers of that JD. wish my Massey had those. That retention mechanism is nice also. 👍

We bought the 1025R TLB. After a few uses I found one of the bolts holding the subframe had never been installed. That was a bit of a shock. Check everything you can often. The Allen head bolts holding the seat frame also came loose, pitching me out of the seat while mowing one time. Back to the hoe: while it is my least used implement, when I need it I am extremely grateful to have it! I removed 10 Alaskan willows and dug some trenches - jobs that would have been much more difficult using other methods or tools. I also built my own cart using furniture dollies from harbor freight so I can roll the backhoe into the garage and keep it mostly out of the way between uses.

Going from the BX2380 up to the BX23S with the backhoe was around $3200 and was totally worth it. I just park it in my front lawn with a sign that says “$120/hr with operator” on weekends when I’m bored. I’ve made over $4700 in just odd jobs within tractor driving distance. I’ve only had the machine for 3 years now and I intend to keep doing my odd jobs.
Full disclosure, I did have to get an LLC so can have insurance; a necessity when doing excavation work.
I have a 2018 1025r TLB, (Backhoe), and l love it ! The backhoe has a thumb as well.
l don't use the backhoe a whole lot, but when l do, it's there !
I've watched the discussion for many years about backhoes and even to a degree loaders. Are they worth the cost? I've had a another brand with BH and Loader that I bought new ten years or so ago. It's an expensive item but I would not have another small tractor without one. Putting in drains, lines, removing small stumps and other projects. It works great. They're not for everyone but if you have the need, they can't be beat. Good advice on coating the exposed rods.

Those instructions are new! I would recommend those new to the 260b back hoe take it on and off every time you mow. This will give the confidence to eventually leave it off and store it(preferably inside a garage or shed). Really a nice thing to have around but I would agree I find the 3 point hitch with Imatch and towing attachments more everyday useful.

Have one on my BX23s. Use it more then my snowblower and bucket combined for yard work. Highly recommend one.
My 1025 has the swivel seat and I bet in five years I’ve used the swivel three times. I just get on my knees and run the backhoe because with how small it is you’re not digging long before you have to move. Love mine, best six grand I’ve spent on an attachment when I bought the tractor.

I must say that I lucked into a Deere back hoe unit for my 4052R for a great price and it fits the need extremely well. Used units are rare and I drove 30 hrs round trip but it WAS worth it! We have a Cat 420 at the farm and my CTL at home but sometimes you just "need" what you want to make your machine complete. And yes I am kind of laughing at myself as I write this.......But true
Nice video,, and that 1800 dollar swivel kit is the biggest piece of junk I’ve ever had, spend all that money on a beautiful tractor and John Deere put that thing under the seat, glad to see they got smart and ditched that thing. Keep the videos coming..
Your vids are very informative.
There is a grey zone between backhoes that work commercial sites and consumer JD products. Although the tractor you showed could do light trenching, it can't dig a septic tank hole, it can't load dump trucks, and it won't bust rock without self-destructing. It is a very nice hobbyist tool but how practical it is in putting food on the table is another matter. Regards!
Buy one with your tractor if you have specific need for it. I had downspouts drains to dig, 10 trees to plant and a few trees to move. The money saved doing those projects made it worth the price.

Hi, Great information, bought me some DENSO tape for my loader arms cylinders that I store outside. Never thought about rust or pitting problem. My dog likes to like Fluid Film lubricant, so I stopped using it. No extra garage storage this year with lumber prices so high.

Back around 2018 I got a 260 added to my 1025r at the time wasn’t really sure if the 260 was available to get for the older 1025r with the 260B coming out. Dealer was able to get a 260; forgot how long it took to get it in at the dealer. Once there it took the dealer few days to install it along with power beyond and swivel seat. Total I paid around $6,500 for it all, taxes and installation included. Today I’m happy it’s all paid off and no more payments to John Deere financial.
For storage I use the storage dolly from bxpanded, then added their thumb. The cart I recommend to others thinking of a backhoe.
Ive used the nieghbors 3pt backhoe on my JD 520 and i had to turn off my hydrualic pump as it messed with my draft control on my 3pt. I dug a stump for her while they used her tractor cleaning up the logs and her little tractor to haul brush so we had 3 tractors all cleaning up storm damage on 1 piece of property. If i were to really used it i would make a axle mount top link bar so i didnt mess with my draft control.
I have a small 35 hp tractor with a front loader and backhoe that came with a farm I bought , I was surprised how much it would do , it has a 16" hoe bucket , just right for digging footers.
Pro tip, if you got a tractor, you got land. No garage space, build a equipment "shed" to store those hydrolic ran implements so they're out of the elements. Side note, my backhoe has dug holes for fence posts and stump removal. Worth the money for me.

I just bought a used but extremely new condition backhoe for my 1025r, the cost savings we there and that was my main goal but overall I don't know if I go to the lengths I did to make it all happen again, in fact the next machine most likely will have the backhoe already set up on it if I choose to go that route...
I decided many years ago that I could pay someone a whole bunch of money to do my digging and still be cheaper than buying and maintaining a backhoe (plus fuel and time). Thanks for the info.

yup, or rent a mini and dominate the tractor hoe option, unless you're living to 150 years old and plan on having time to burn
For 11000 I got a high hour cab Case 580k. The compact/utility tractor backhoe attachments are toys compared to the real thing, plus I get a FEL that could pick that whole tractor up and dump it onto the trailer.
I reference the directions at least once during the process, even though I take it on and off a bunch during the summer months. I think worst part on 1025r/260b set up is making sure your power beyond hose re connects. That is a really tight fit on my tractor with the top circle guard which keeps the top end of hose from flopping around. So right that it is hard to tell if it is connected, and I usually mess with the rock shaft with tractor running to confirm. First summer I had it, I did not realize how tight it was, had a John Deere tech come out who thought it was connected already as well took some trial and error to realize that was why I could not raise my mower deck with rock shaft, power beyond was not properly connected
Yeah, I get quite a few questions on the 3 point not working. First question is always if they have a backhoe. Seems that hydraulic connection can be trickier than the others.

I like how the outriggers have latches on the JD. My Kubota backhoe doesn't have that feature, and I keep a ratchet strap around them. Nice solution JD!

Since purchasing a BX23s I make up reasons to use it. The backhoe has dug many trenches for power/data/gas/drainage on my property. Almost 100 hours in 9 months.

As a Time Served Heavy Engineer the Denso tape is always the 'go to' to protect rams id you cannot store them in the retracted position, it can also be used to protect the threads on the Bottle Screws/ Turnbuckles on your three point linkages if you are laying the machine up for an extended period.
Interesting option. For my plow cylinders I have been using STP (a fairly tacky oil additive) though I think grease could work too, but it wouldn't be as long term as the tape I'd imagine.

I purchased my new 1025r with a backhoe. The salesman almost appeared to talk me out of it. Said I could always purchase and add it later. I’m glad I didn’t listen. I use the backhoe all the time and love it. It also helps serve as a ballast for the loader. I’ve been clearing my wooded property for the last year and a half in my spare time and the cost of the 1025r with the 260b has been irrelevant comparing to rent equipment or to pay someone else. I would never buy a tractor without. As for escalators, capabilities maybe more but it is more expensive to buy two units and maintain then one. Also, let’s not forget storage. It’s not always affordable nor eye pleasing to see a huge storage building (s) around your home or the added taxes for them.

Here's what I used on my backhoe for winter storage. Go to your local hardware store and purchase 4-ft pieces of foam insulation for water pipe. Oil down the rag and wipe your rams down and slip the foam insulation over the ram.
Excellent idea not just for a backhoe, but ALL hydraulic powered equipment in general.

As a owner of a JD with a backhoe it ties up all the 3 pt attachments if you use them. So you either buy a 2nd tractor or for most people just rent a backhoe when needed and you'll be better off with most backhoes adding 6K or more to the price for most models.

I bought my first 1025r a few months ago. An regret not getting the backhoe with it. An now I’m slowly finding an buying everything I need to put one on now. An it’s costing way more then it would of if I would of just got it from the beginning. Should of went with buy once’s cry once’s

I bought my RK-37 Hydrostatic Cab with bucket loader and backhoe. The backhoe came with a quick disconnect frame and IS NOT a 3 point backhoe attachment. I have to pull 2 small pins from the frame, put the leveling pads down, begin to pull away about a foot, then disconnect my two hydraulic lines. Putting it back on is as simple as backing up 3/4's of the way over the backhoe frame, connect the hydraulics, use the leveling pads and bucket arm to raise and level the frame to slide onto the quick attach tractor frame on the tractor, back up a few more inches and drop the pins in. It's actually alot easier than some of my other attachments. I dug a farm burn pit for my Dad with it 20'x20' x 7.5' deep, spent 20 minutes dropping the backhoe and put my 6 ft. box blade back on and graded his driveway all in one afternoon.
Yes sir, taking a backhoe on and off of the same machine is normally a piece of cake. That isn't the issue at all. However, you have subframe that was bolted on in many places and only fits a very limited quantity of models. You also have Power Beyond hydraulics that would be very labor intensive to remove and reinstall on another machine. The time and effort associated with removing those items and reinstalling on another machine is time that no one wants to pay for. On top of that, all of those parts fit only a few models. They are far too big to ship. This means, I would need a customer to say they don't want the backhoe and willing to pay for all the labor to remove it along with the wholesale credit they will get, then find another customer in the local area willing to pay all the labor to reinstall and retail pricing for it. Of course, it has to be a customer with one of few existing models that will even fit and they need to be local to me.
I have zero interest in sitting on that kind of money and crossing my fingers waiting for if and when I could ever sell the backhoe and recoup that money. I rarely sell a mower deck that's removed from a tractor and give next to nothing for them in trade credit for the same reasons.
I'm glad I bought by backhoe with my 1023e had a dig a grave for an animal that we had lost worked out awesome lot better than shovel

I have thought that it would be convenient and a nice option if they could incorporate the creep forward and backward function for backhoes like the 4R series have to hook up to implements located on the rear fender. Just a thought.
Creep is for people too scared to use the hoe to move the tractor.
My 270A on my 2014 Gen 1 2025R is the best investment of the tractor! I've cleared so much property with it! I use it all the time for so many tasks. Worth it's weight in gold! If you don't own one, rent one and you'll see what I mean. With different bucket sizes and even a root ripper, you'll never run out of uses. Oh, don't forget, THUMB! You need a THUMB. It is required for moving around branches, logs, rocks , and many other yard debri!

I bought a backhoe for my little tractor and never regretted it.
Swivel seat is standard on my BX25D. No subframe either. On and off in about 10 minutes.
That’s what shops like us are made for. We can put just about any back hoe on anything you want. And it won’t cost much more than that Deere seat swivel base.
Remember anything’s possible with enough will power
And enough welding rod...
I finally got feed up dealing with the backhoe on my John Deere 3046 and bought a bobcat e35 mini excavator. Yes, it’s nice having a digging implement without the need to purchase another piece of equipment but let’s be honest, backhoes on sub-compact and compact tractors simply are not that great and the ones that do not have dedicated operator stations or that hook directly to the PTO are basically unusable on all but a few applications.
If backhoe attachments were cheap that would be one thing, if a decent backhoe attachment cost $1,500 then Maybe you could justify it, but these things are like 7-10k, sometimes as much as 35% of the cost of the whole tractor.
The way I see it, if you use the backhoe enough that you could even possibly justify spending 10k on a backhoe, then I would strongly consider buying a smaller mini excavator.
If you use it once a year... rent one and save yourself the money and hassle.
What jobs were you using the backhoe for?
All kinds of jobs, digging up stumps, grading, land clearing, loading limerock, raising small barn walls, etc.
Look at the end of day:
Do backhoes suck compared to mini excavators? Yes.
Do backhoes suck is general, No.
I sold my Kubota 4701 Loader Backhoe and bought a Bobcat T450 Track Loader and a Bobcat E 20 Mini X. I can still tow them with my Tundra and they just worked out better for what I use them for
The last one I worked on (been quite a few years) had a PTO driven pump so you didn't have to screw with all of that extra plumbing, but this does seem to explain why I keep getting the runaround when I inquire about one for my Kubota!?
I had a 2 year old Kabota that I wanted to add a sub frame and back hoe attachment to. For everything with instillation it was around 10k. And cons would be no longer able to fit inside, no cab, power was moderate, & you would need to change seats every time I would need to use the hoe.. in the end I sold the Kabota & bought a 8 year older Case backhoe... I said it’s more then I might need but found myself pushing it pretty hard sometimes. I paid less then what a new Kabota with a hoe cost but I’m digging with a cab,radio,AC/Heat, more reach & much more power.... my 2 cents would be shop around and you will find a nice deal
I jave a 1725 Massey with a hoe. I fix field tiles, repair water lines, dig small footers in tight spots, trench for underground wires and a couple other things I can't think of.

When storing , turn the bucket to the ground. Not only is your cylinder retracted in the bucket doesn't fill up with snow or water...
The backhoe also helps as a counterweight.. without it my 1025r can't seem to do hardly anything.
We bought a woodmax 3 point backhoe several years ago, & so far it has been ok. Still wish we could've found a John Deere unit, but they are impossible to find. The quality of the woodmax leaves a lot to be desired, but then you get what you pay for, lol. 3 or 4 years ago we had an issue with the septic system & it more than paid for itself enabling us to make repairs instead of hiring a plumber with a real backhoe LoL....

I agree 100%. I bought my 1025r brand new several years ago and the dealership cracked the transmission case installing the hoe's subframe. Also a question. Do you know of a kit to convert the front end loader's pioneer fittings to flat face fittings. I am an industrial maintenance mechanic and none of the vendors I deal with handle this type of fittings in size that small.

What works as a good film that is easy to clean is petroleum jelly dissolved in wd-40. Get a gallon of wd-40, a spray bottle, and something to melt the jelly in. Melt some jelly and mix 1:2 jelly and wd-40 in the spray bottle. Shake really well to dissolve and mix. Spray on what ever need protection. When the wd-40 evaporates, it leaves the jelly as a coating that is easy to wipe off and clean or even just leave on. Not perfect, but cheap, easy, benign, and works.
Use GREASE on your exposed cylinder rams. Put it on with your fingers.
Care to explain why? I’ve never heard this before.
@@hpijeep the grease forms a barrier between the chrome on the ram and air and water. This will prevent the chrome from pitting and the steel underneath it from rusting. The spray he used is probably just an aerosol grease. If you don’t want to se your fingers a cheap paintbrush will do.
Why? Wouldn't dust and debris stick all over that grease, then potentially getting into and under the seals rendering them useless? I used to race dirt bikes, if the fork seals started to leak any oil it would collect so much dust which all would get caked up under the seals and ruin the seals in short order.
@@scottcoleman7304 this is for long term storage like snow plows in the spring that will sett until late fall/early winter. Plows/ tillage equipment that will set from spring until next spring. You just wipe it off before using it taking any dirt and debris with it. It is less expensive and one less thing to buy over a special spray with one use.

I purchased the backhoe as well. It is expensive but a nice luxury to have when needed. Have no regrets. And I think I does a very nice job as a backhoe. Sure it is no mini excavator that is designed for only one function. The 1025r does many, many functions as opposed to the mini. The backhoe was 6k. How much is a mini?? Dumb to even compare.
Dumb to even compare. I did compare, but not in this video. In fact, a very valid argument for the front hoe bucket. Keep an open mind, not everyone has your situation.

My reply was more for 890max. I guess I should’ve posted it under his remark. But these machines are designed to be ‘good’ at wide variety of tasks and not the absolute best at any one particular task. It seems that if you chose to purchase the BH you are glad you did. If you did not then it’s easy to say that it is a waste of money and inadequate at that function.

My dad said, "Backhoes are expensive and we don't need one." Then more than 150 feet of waterline froze and shattered one fine late winter day. We had bought a backhoe 9 months prior. The backhoe paid for itself. My dad called his insurance company and was able to pay off the whole back He expense plus all the materials for the job and pay down our "Barn".

After pricing one out for my DK6010 im just going to buy a mini excavator after it's payed off.
I was lucky to find a new unused one with accessories 3hrs away. I think the owner was too intimidated to mount it. He wouldn't give me the mount. Once I bought the missing pieces from JD, my savings were almost gone.
In many ways this is why I was trying to say your comparison video didn’t really do the comparison justice.
Your $800~ (May 5th 2021) stump bucket kind of stands alone for the user that didn’t get the backhoe and is trying to make their unit do more.
As you noted, you have to be willing to accept a fair bit of deprecation depending on tractor age to add that backhoe to your older tractor.
I have asked a dealer to add one to a 1026R, understanding this but still looking at over $10,000 savings. Unfortunately it sold before we could talk it out. But I would have run the tractor to the grave so I could accept depreciation. (Food for thought if anyone is in the same place I was.)
Used subcompact of any configuration are like unicorns right now. New is nearly as hard to find with dealers estimating 3 month waits.
Everything in every industry seems to be backordered. At least anything that's worth waiting for.
I bought one for my 4120. Used it a few times sold it less than a year later.

One huge reason why I got my mahindra because of the ease of pulling the back hoe off and putting it back on only takes a few mins well worth getting it with the tractor new
I saw some one trying to dig a trench with one. 20 mins into the job he switched to a shovel. They are adorable though. I heard him grumble something along the lines of "Their buckets are too small, there is no thumb and their articulation is painful as you have to move the entire tractor with a 5 point turn every time you want more than 15 degrees of movement."
There is also some one on YT that made a small tracked excavator with a similar sized bucket to a tractor mounted back hoe. He built it for less than the price of the hoe attachment + since he built it, he knows how to fix it if it breaks.
How deep was the trench he was trying to dig?

When parking for the winter smear some marine grease on the rams
Boeshield T9 for the rams, it was made for aircraft hydraulics by Boeing and will protect against anything.
