    We can dredge this river till it is deep for ships. Nigeria nor Niger Delta cannot stop the passage of commercial ships which will be protected under international law. Afterall the Panama and Suez Canal were created from dry land. This one will be an easy job for a construction firm.

      like the ambition but why dredge a place when there is an abundance of rivers; oceans in a neighboring area called Niger Delta?

    • @maverick7874
      @maverick7874 Před 3 lety +6

      @@ericdave5786 It is for political and economic reasons. The relationship between the Igbos and those in the Niger Delta region is more like a love hate relationship. During the Biafran war, some ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta region fought on the Biafran side while some fought on the Nigerian side against Biafra. The agitation for the restoration of Biafra has been reawakened for the second time but the full support of the Niger Delta region is not there. Just recently, a governor of the region who happens to be Igbo ancenstrally (Ikwerre) but denies his root used the Nigerian military to attack another indgineous Igbo community (Obigbo) that were carved into his state during the fraudulent state creation by a Nigerian military head of state. The military killed a lot of young men and women and whisked away a lot of people in the area to their barracks accusing them of being members of the group agitating from the restoration of Biafra (IPOB). They also arrested any Jewish worshipper in sight and destroyed synagogues in the community. Having a seaport in a territory fully controlled by Igbos will prevent the Niger Delta region whether independent or still part of Nigeria from using an economic blockade in the future if there happens to be a dispute between Igboland and the Niger Delta region. The same strategy of cutting supplies has been used before by the Nigerian government. During the Biafran war, the Nigerian government with the help of the British Navy guarding the oceans in the region and some Niger Deltan ethnic groups like the Ijaws guarding the creeks and rivers starved 3 to 5 million Igbos to death. Relying on a vital infrastructure like a seaport in a territory where we can't consider its inhabitants friends or foes will be disastrous to the economic security of Igboland.

    Igbo may not need to build a seaport in Azumini because Opobo and parts of Bonny are Igbo lands. Ijaws and other minorities in that region may disagree but whether they like or not, those two islands are going with Biafra. Every precolonial historical evidence proves that Opobo and a part of Bonny are Igbo land, and we must not leave them behind.

      @Nsikak Essien "Narrow channels of marginal sea or inland waters through which international shipping has a right of passage." It is an international law that countries inland of any river that exits into an ocean or sea have access of freeway for international shipping. The most you people can do is to prevent more dredging of the river for passage of ships citing environmental concerns but you cannot block barges from plying the rivers to reach inland. Economic cooperation between two neighboring countries is the fastest way to develop and a win win for both parties. So If you people want to play as economically uncooperative neighbors, we will also respond in kind.
      Also mind you that climate change is real and more coastal areas all across the world will be inundated by the ocean in the future. Nigeria is already having numerous cases of consistent flooding and erosion of coastal areas. You will be needing dryland to relocate to in the future while the ocean comes to us knowing how unserious the Nigerian government is when it comes to development.
