  • Today's video is all about Pet Portrait Painting in Acrylic - more specifically painting an American bulldog named Darla. As a pet portrait artist, I have painted a variety of commissions, but memorial portraits always will hold a special place in my heart. I show you my painting process and talk through my thoughts and feelings behind this beautiful animal portrait.

    Do you take on commissions? If so, or if not - why? Commissions have always been a huge part of my business plan, but as I continue to explore the world of the arts - I realize that not every artist includes them in their plans! ♥ Let me know in the comments below!

      Yes, I do take commissions. I work in the non-profit, animal sheltering field for the past 15 years and animal welfare is super important to me. So animal, pet, and pet memorial portraits are near and dear to me. I have a love/hate relationship with commissions. LOL! I have a HARD time finding clientele that will pay a decent price for my commissions, so I'm satisfied for now to offer them very "economically" while I hone my skills (I'm very critical of myself). And then when I'm satisfied that my skill level is up to par with others, say someone like yourself! You are AMAZING! Then I will have the confidence to increase my prices to something that honors my talent and time.

    I'm an immigrant from South Sudan to Canada and the love and welcome I received from good friends like Mora and her late bulldog, Rosie was unexpected. You could call it culture shock, but that joy of life, instead of people killing each other and fighting over simple things.
    _A good dog can leave great memories, especially if you haven't had any good ones, and I just want to paint Rosie next to Mora and baby Fiona. I know I can paint it but I just want to say, thank you for always being kind to those around, sometimes we even forget about how to treat ourselves right, but in those great eyes of a bulldog, you can feel the missing link between Human Beings and Animals. Fiona is now a happy child chasing her big dreams, thanks to peace, love and kindness.
    _I mostly paint landscapes, just Bob Ross did, but I don't think there is a valuable market for paintings these days, or maybe I haven't bust out of my bubble yet. Thanks for the video sister. Education should be passed on to the next generation. Asante sana.

      Thank-you so much Steve! So glad you like it. She was such a beautiful dog, and an honour to paint. I appreciate your support for so many years! It warms my heart to see this family grow, and continue to develop as time goes on. Makes me happy that my art can bring people together. Cheers!

    Yes, Yes, Yes, all the knowledge on pet portrait commissions and commissions in general! :) Please and Thank you!!! Love your style and since watching you, I have tweeked my used of paint to be a bit less textured and thick and am using value and brush strokes to show fur texture instead. Does that make sense? I'm not knocking the artist that likes to use a thick, layered, impasto style. It's just that your thin application of acrylics and blending and layers of values has really helped me improve-in my own eyes. :)

      Hi Kim! I am so glad to hear that you have found my videos/art helpful in your own art journey. That makes me happy - so I really appreciate you taking the time to comment, and let me know! :) It definitely makes sense. I love both styles/use of acrylic as well, but find myself more easily creating with a smooth application. I am jealous of those who can make such wonderful art with a lot of texture. My brain just does not compute! LOL! Cheers, and thanks again!

    Beautiful work! Yes I would love to see a video talking about getting started doing commissions! I have just started working with acrylics and I play and listen to your videos while I’m working to pick up some tips on working with what I consider to be a difficult medium!

    How can I make my dog's fur look more realistic? I just can't get the colored right and it's beginning to make me question my abilities as a painter

    • @cassydraws
      @cassydraws  Před rokem

      Hi Sara! Unfortunately this is completely normal, and a part of the painting process. I have been painting for years, and still experience that feeling when I am unable to produce something I know I can! So don't give up, and keep pushing through! As for the realism of your dog's fur - my biggest piece of advice is to look up the technique called "Glazing" in Acrylic. This has changed the way I paint, and really added an additional layer of realism and depth to my paintings - not to mention makes colour mixing easier, and layering too! Be patient, and have multiple layers of paint - try not to do everything on one layer. Take your time, and at times take a step away from your painting to creatively recharge and have a fresh perspective. I hope these tips help! :) Best of luck!
