PRO TIP: The guitar bus should have a sufficient amount of 500-600 Hz, as stacking guitars that are (usually) scooped (in this genre) you can end up with a real deficiency of weighty mids. =)

Also, I don't understand why people bash presets. Granted, I don't think they're useful for compressors or EQs. But for a lot of other plugins they can be a great jumping off point. You can always tweak it so it fits your song better.

I'm considering getting the Blasting Room VST. That's the studio owned by Descendents drummer. Alkaline Trio, Hot Water Music, Rise Against and a bunch of others recorded there, so their drum sound must be good.

Random Question: First of all, this video is extremely helpful and has assisted my own Pop-Punk mixes/masters immensely - so THANK YOU. I too have a very sibilant voice. Not so much S's and T's (although I can have trouble with those), but particularly C's and K's. I tend to really go hard on those subconsciously, especially if I'm singing in a Tom Delonge-esque upper register. Are there mixing tricks to reign those in, and/or better mic techniques I can implement: so I don't sound like an amateur? Hahaha
High pitch vocals can get really abrasive. A De-Esser or multiband compressor to reign in the high end will work wonders

@@SeanLearyMusic no problem 👍. Spent years in a band with a sibilant, unconsciously abrasive in the high registers singer. Its usually somewhere in the 2.5-5K range and a dynamic compressor is unnoticeable except bringing down the sharpness (thats all a de-esser is)
Brandon got this exactly. A DeEsser can help a lot, or a dynamic EQ like the TDR Nova can duck the harsh frequencies when they build up!

Not a dumb question! I'm recording the guitar DIs clean and adding overdrive through the plugins

I read in the Toontrack forum from a moderator that we are seeing the Black Box because we are loading an EZX in SD3. Can't confirm; never owned EZDrummer. However, someone else mentioned they see a Black Box in the Progressive SDX in SD3 so IDK.
Hmm interesting, I'll look into that further. The Pop Punk one is an EZX so maybe I can hunt down the parameters

Mixing and mastering are weaknesses of mine, so I’m checking multiple videos for ideas. I overestimate bass frequencies and make all my guitars sound like 90’s black metal it seems.
If you make black metal, then is that even a problem??? 🤣
@@anndynegative Haha! Not at all! But that was years back! Never know though. It could return just to cover up my mixing issues!
Getting a sub to check the low end is a good idea if you can afford it, but def check in some decent studio headphones. They usually represent the subs pretty well - Well enough to identify problems. If you’re not already doing it, I would high pass those guitars too. I usually do it around 80-100hz (6db/Oct) and then possibly take out some of the 40-80 hz with a bell that the HPF missed. I’m not big on one size fits all solutions but high-passing everything except bass/kick to is a good practice to make room for the bass and kick. Lots of audible and inaudible low end buildup on pretty much every instrument.

I’m confused, I have ezdrummer 2 and SD3, I thought the pop punk was only available for ez drummer!? I have it but not for SD!?
EZ Drummer is kind of just a "limited" version of Superior 3. All the EZXs for EZ Drummer will load into SP3 and you'll have more control over everything!

How do you go about setting your bpm?
Honestly I kinda get a feel just playing the idea, and then I adjust the tempo by 3-5 BPM until I get it to feel right. It's almost entirely a gut instinct.

no blasting here! I use EZD3, EZBass and love the pop punk packs! Great points though, can spend more time on the actual tracks!

I haven't used EZ bass, but I imagine it sounds awesome based on Toontracks other stuff. If it works for you, then it's the best choice 🤙
@@anndynegative if I had a bass, I’m sure I’d lay the tracks down with my Line 6 Helix, but for a “one” man show I love how easy it is to lay down tracks. Do you use a faderport for workflow?
