  • Episode 56 - I talk to Dave Caroffino, MDNR Fisheries Tribal Coordination Unit Manager, about the 2023 Great Lakes Fishing Decree, the newest fishing agreement between the tribal, state and federal governments. Find the entire interview here on my CZcams channel.
Next I talk to MDNR Wildlife Biologist Brian Roell at the October Natural Resources Commission meeting about the trail camera survey the DNR recently launched to gather wolf population estimates throughout the year.
Also during the NRC meeting, Brian presented steps necessary to create a wolf hunt in the U.P. in the event wolves are federally de-listed, and the public gave their input on wolf management.
Plus a really cool viewer video!

I know a lot of white tail hunters are upset with the deer numbers in the UP. The wolves eat a lot of them. I'm going to my first deer camp this year up there, cant wait to go!

I saw 2 doe's on different days, I think the same doe. Heard wolves everyday, they were real close to us on the first nights walk out. I had a great time at camp and cant wait to go back! Stepped out at 3 am on the second night and there was a 6 point in the camp yard. I hope to drag my tractor up there in the spring and fix the property owners 2 track. Its in bad shape and hasnt ever been touched in 80 years. Stayed 5 nights, heard a few shots, a couple loud vehicles and one airplane. The absolute quietness and solitude draws me back.@@ChrisWilliams-nu1sf

Anyone complaining about the wolves is uneducated in how important their role in nature is. Look up what happened when they introduced a pack into Yellow Stone a few years ago.

They found more pics of wolves than coyotes. I see that at my camp too. The wolf population seems higher than coyotes. We have to do something about these nuisance animals.

If the white fish are suffering I don’t understand why we’re still allowing the natives to use gill nets?! I understand it’s about keeping their culture and traditions alive but times have changed for everyone and the fish numbers are not what they used to be. It takes everyone’s participation to keep our fisheries and wildlife numbers in a good balance and I don’t think we should allow that balance to fall to the way side in the name of “tradition”. It’s all fun and games until ancient Michigan staple species start disappearing and we can’t get them back. It sounds like they’re already preparing for the worst which is disappointing to hear when the officer said “when the white fish start to disappear what’ll be the next staple fish. Well it’s going to be the lake trout.” I just hope people can make the right decisions and sacrifice a little bit of “tradition” for the greater good of fishing and wildlife for everybody in the state of Michigan because what we do right now will affect generations after us and they might look back cursing us for not doing what we could’ve to preserve all the great opportunities in this state.

It's definitely important to preserve our fisheries for the future! The full interview video clarifies it a little bit more, not fully, but does go into further explanation. I didn't notice the video stopped uploading yesterday. It should be up in an hour. From what I understand is they're going to catch the same amount of whitefish whether it be gill nets or trap nets. It would probably be more important to set tighter harvest limits on the lakes where whitefish populations have crashed? I do know that two tribes have recently stocked whitefish in the last month to see if that will work - not sure if Lake Michigan or Lake Huron. From what I understand is Lake Superior does have a healthy population of whitefish and lake trout. Thankfully Lake Superior is cold and that keeps invasive species out.

@@discovertheup I’ll put my notifications on and be looking for the second half when it comes out! Thank you for the clarification. It does make me a little more optimistic however I do believe there is still more work to be done! Thank you for the feed back and awesome videos keeping us in the loop on Michigan news and opportunities!

I want to know why we even have wolves.

  • @thomas9565

The roads they put them on are very stupid locations, if they were actually conducting animal studies. In Chippewa county they put them off H-40 and when we were hunting in past their cams they missed all the wolf activity constantly. So it’s hard to believe they’re studying animals from what we’ve seen. That or the biologists aren’t hunters and don’t know how or where to place trail cameras.

I don’t blame the up hunters for being upset. I live in the northern lower peninsula. We are over run with coyotes and I know they kill deer. It’s hard to imagine how much impact wolves are having in the up and by the way. Why are they there in the first place. I’m sure our grand parents had a good reason to get rid of them We don’t need wolves to kill and eat the deer that we would like to kill and eat. Makes no good sense to me

Don’t feed us a line of crap Roell. It’s okay for MI to ignore federal law and legalize marijuana, but it’s not okay to ignore federal law and manage our own wolves? GTFOH.
