  • Nice clean race but no glory today
Formula 5000 (or F5000) was an open-wheel, single-seater auto-racing formula that ran in different series around the world from 1968 to 1982. It was originally intended as a low-cost series aimed at open-wheel racing cars that no longer fit into any particular formula. The name “5000” comes from the maximum 5.0-liter engine capacity allowed in the cars, although many cars ran with smaller engines. Manufacturers like McLaren, Eagle, March, Lola, Lotus, Elfin, Matich, and Chevron participated in this exciting racing category. In North America, Formula 5000 was introduced as a class within SCCA Formula A races, but it quickly became dominated by cars equipped with production-based American V8 engines. Notable drivers like Mario Andretti, Al Unser, James Hunt, and Jody Scheckter competed in F5000 during its heyday. However, increasing costs and Lola’s dominance led to a decline in popularity after 1975. The European scene also had its own championship, with the Cosworth DFV engine playing a significant role. Smaller privateer teams and drivers adopted American F5000 regulations, creating an exciting era of racing history
