JPR Williams: a rugby union great who changed full-back role

- Welsh rugby has lost a legend following the death of JPR Williams at the age of 74 after a short illness. The full-back, who played 55 times for his country and made eight Test appearances for the British & Irish Lions, was a pivotal member of the Wales side that won three Five Nations grand slams in eight seasons between 1971 and 1978. Williams was credited with changing the way people perceived the role of full-backs. Strong, direct, committed and athletic, he was first capped by Wales in 1969 at the age of 19 and was the starting Lions Test full-back in New Zealand two years later.

From a kiwi rugby fan
JPR you are one of the greats of
Welsh and Lions rugby r I p.
Mister WILLIAMS JPR. Thank's a lot for your so beautiful, so fabulous Rugby 🏉. You will stand in my mind forever. Rest in Peace. A french fan. 🏴🇲🇫
Thank you so much for your touching comment welsh rugby fans appreciate your understanding of JPR a true legend
Thanks Didier. Love from Wales ❤
You just had to say the initials JPR and every rugby fan knew who you meant, gone way too soon, you will be sorely missed by everyone in Wales and Worldwide. Taith saff John byddwch am byth yn ein hatgofion.
Probably the greatest player ever, to wear the number 15 jersey. RIP JPR.
Israel Folau........but it was a completely different game.
Lol@@jingleballix
Christian Cullen by far but he help shape rugby there would no cullum if there was no jpr
@@kerishenton4703 jpr blanco cullen
In that era Anrew Irvine was reasonable and Serg Blanco, but JPR was the best.
Shocked to hear this news. He seemed absolutely indestructible. RIP JPR, a true rugby legend, a runaway, unstoppable, galloping horse of a player. From an Irishman.
Best attacking fullback ever JPR
Best fullback ever :).
They just don't make men like that anymore...absolutely fearless..JPR...The best full back ever.
Imagine a footballer getting that injury, you wouldn’t see him for 3 seasons … he returned to the field … legend
Would see him again😂😂
Not a rugby fan but back in the seventies everyone knew JPR Williams. A household name and a legend.
The 30 stitches were put in by his father, and he went back onto the pitch to finish the match. Hardest of the hard.
JPR…..RIP, you have given so much to so many. A true legend and gentleman.
What a player, courageous, tough and wonderful at full tilt. Also won a Wimbledon junior title in 1966!
Toute la France salue ce joueur extraordinaire qui était JPR Willams...Talent, respect, un grand grand gentleman du Rugby. 💙🩶❤
My friend Jonathan B who had no knowledge of rugby finished the 1986 London Marathon (sponsored by Mars) alongside JPR in 3hrs 51 minutes. JB said they ran the last 6 miles together and chatted for sometime afterwards. He only realised who it was a little later. JB said JPR was a super chap. JB has a photo to prove it. JPR was wearing N674 that day rather than 15. (I think then the Marathon finished on Westminster Bridge.) Chris B of Chesham.
A Welsh Legend and a legend of rugby, R I P John Peter Rhys🏉❤👍
Never lost in an International against the Sowsnek. Marvellous legacy that, as a Celtic warrior.
Y saes
He was simply the best fullback in my lifetime. And a medic… what a great, lovely, talented human. Rest in peace JPR🙏
JPR was a legend. Guys like him, HO de Villiers, Serge Blanco, Christian Cullen were stunning fullbacks
Legend 🏴🏴
I used to start every game like JPR Williams
Finished most like Kenneth Williams 😂
My Dad's favourite player growing up. A truly exciting player and hard as nails
The father of modern fullback play ...joint greatest of all time with Serge Blanco .
Extremely tough man .
What a player, wonderful memories thanks JPR.
He is greatly missed. Hr is loved no matter where he played
Love you so much Butty .........Thank you for all the memories ........All my love to his family ...Welsh Icon ,,..............
He was like a rock star in that era ..part if my childhood went when he died .
A great team player
An absolute legend Even though I'm English I thought he was one of the greatest players of his generation An absolute tragedy he died too soon RIP JPR
A very brave player and arguably the most iconic with the way he looked. Sideburns socks rolled down. The arch tackler who was afraid of no one. Under the high ball peerless and would run the ball back into ruck and maul situations.
RIP
მადლობა 🍇☦🍇thanks Williams JPR.
In my top 5 of the best 15's I have ever seen & I'm in my mid 70's ! R I P JPR.
the word buccaneer was invented just for JPR, what a player and what a man. Bless his great heart
JPR Williams and JPS Lotus. The two greatest sets of initials in 70's sport.
I clearly remember JPR against Argentina´s "Los Pumas" in 76, won by Wales after a converted penalty in the final minute by 20-19. Outstanding JPR and Phil Bennet, but an overall superb welsh team, almost humbled!
Natural
"Meur ras John". R.I.P Condolences to your family, other loved ones, colleagues and friends: as well as the people of the Country of Wales. From a "kenderwi."
Player bigger than game.
❤
RIP John Peter Rhys Williams 🏴DIOLCH for everything 😢 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Hero
A real joy to have seen him in his pomp…….but the Scottish full backs were before him in attacking play. Such a brick wall in defence…..every size of player chopped down.
The initials were used to tell him apart from Llanelli winger John Joseph “JJ” Williams.
I hated rugby but I loved watching that Welsh squad
Who is the second best full back of all time behind JPR Williams?
Leigh halfpenny and then the greatest winger of all time Shane Williams if he decided to play 15😂
Diolch JPR. Roedd yn anrhydedd eich gwylio.
Pre genius
Typical look from the seventies. That remains me Ajax Amsterdam 1970. I remember this great great player. Nobody talks about it here in France : not surprising, ridiculous mentality.
Blanco a seriously talented player but not as courageous or as fearless as JPR. Cullen was an incredible fullback. It is difficult to compare players from different eras.
it makes a complete Joke regard John Kirwan..along Brian Williams in New Zealand..of the true importance and Rugby in Reality ..JPR Williams was a player beyond these ...!!
Dirty NZ. Shame onthe game.
Probably one of the earliest fullbacks to actually attack. Not the greatest though. He wasn’t in Christian Cullens class.
