Some centuries before creation of Sparta and Athens there was only two civilizations: Minoan in Crete and cycladic in Southern Aegean Islands but after the volcano of Santorini exploded both civilizations destroyed. All the survivors from Minoan went to Sparta and the survivors from cycladic in Athens. Then the whole pelloponesse belonged to Sparta but local revolts made 6 kingdoms except Sparta (Ilia,Arkadia,Argolida,Achaea,Corinth and
Messinia) .This whole situation drove Spartans crazy and started to have strict rules as a result to reconquer the whole Peloponnese except the lands of Corinth and ome Northern parts of Argolida and then fought with Athens, Corinth and Corfu they lost, Macedonia conquered Athens and Sparta became bigger and free again and some years after Rome came and destroyed Sparta and the Remaining parts of Macedonia
(When I mean Macedonia I mean the Ancient Greek civilization not the Slavic country who got its name cause romans named the whole region province of Macedonia)

That being said, how they maintained their soldiers on peak form was really impressive, they weren't simply barbarian people, they emphasized strategy, stealthiness and creativity to achieve goals, as well as an unrelenting preparation. This idea of training so hard that war is easier is brilliant! Probably the essence of preparation.

Resting during war time is actually a great strategy. Rigorous training can build strength and endurance but the muscles break down during exercise so rest allows them to rebuild and recover. By resting during times of war you conserve your energy for battle and allow the body to heal in between. If you’re well trained already, war time training is more about strategy and maintenance on what has already been built in times of peace.
