Chicago Footwork: A Battle to be Crowned King of the Dance Craze

  • With more than 500 homicides in 2012, gang violence on the South Side of Chicago is so bad, it's earned the city the notorious moniker "CHI-raq." But among the gang-ridden streets are an elite crew of warriors who battle with more grit, fury, and vengeance than all the rest. Their weapon? A pair of good sneakers. Their battleground? The dancefloor. Sound like West Side Story? You're not far off.
Footworking is a hyper-fast style of dance that has to be seen to be believed. And every day, South Siders gather in rec centers, on street corners, and in nightclubs to duke it out in intricate dance battles. They compete for many reasons-to settle an old score, to get the girls, or simply, to be the best. And though most of these DJs and dancers have never left their neighborhood, their hypnotic music and style of dance has gone viral around the globe. Footwork DJs have sprung up at music festivals across the US, Europe, and Mexico playing to packed crowds who can't get enough of the battle-born tracks.
So what's at the heart of this phenomenon? What makes this music so addictive? And how are these pioneers forging music history while living in the most violent neighborhoods in the nation? Vocativ went to Chicago and spent a day putting ourselves in the (very quick) shoes of local dancer/producer/rapper- and current Battlegroundz champion-Frost The Boss.

This is a dreadful representation of the footwork scene. Firstly Footwork is not to be associated with Chi-Raq, it should be associated with Chicago alone! The documenter couldn't seem more out of place if he tried, how do you expect to do a doc on footwork if he's not even aware of the basics. MORE IMPORTANTLY anyone associated with the 'foot working' used in Madonna's live tour has abandoned the essence and soul of footwork. It is not about the money or fame, but respect from the underground culture that it came from. I have never seen Battlegroundz that dead, did they sneak in when it was shut or something? Also wtf is going on with the music? This video is supposed to be about footwork! DJ Spinn, Traxman, Rashad, DJ Earl, DJ Mannym DJ Paypal, Taso... If you are interested in the actual footwork scene, check out the videos on FACT, Thump, or the long doc on Teklife 'I'm Tryna Tell Ya' - Far, far better than this...

I'm trippin cause every time someone go's to chicago to learn about footwork as they wanna call it. They go to the southside. That's not where it was created. First off, it's more than just footwork. The original name for the dance is jackin. It wasn't named juke until the mid 90's. I'm glad to see it has sparked intrest in people outside chicago but keep 100 to its true origin. WESTSIDE OF CHAGO!!! And another thing. THAT'S NOT THE GHOST AT ALL.

Lol. Back in the day in the chi the dance was more creative than what is shown. I was once a master at it but let it go to grow up and put my focus on life. It's cool to see it be passed on but these kids today are doing a terrible job at it.

This dance started in DETROIT in the late 60's as the jit. Madonna is from Detroit and knows this as well. Research "the jitterbugs" and Detroit dance shows, the Scene and the New Dance show. Speak the truth and shame the devil...
