    if you put the leather one side flesh side out and the other hair side out,you will have one side smooth and the other rough which for different types of sewing will give you a choice on gripping the needle to push

    I have wanted to make a leather thimble for ages, but with arthritis in my hands, the thought of trying to push a needle through 2 layers of leather kept me from trying. Thank you so much for showing how to use a sewing machine to put holes into the leather before beginning. Metal thimbles make my fingers sweat then the thimble slides off.

    Stumbled on this while looking for an instructional on making a sailmaker's palm and you were recommended in the sidebar.
    Shall be making one of these as, being a guy, bought thimbles tend to be meant for more petite fingers than mine!
    Loved the idea about pre-punching on the sewing machine but may I make a couple of suggestions?
    Before pricking out the holes stick the two pieces together using PVA glue - I think you call it White Glue or Elmer's Glue in the US?
    Just along the seam allowance of course, and set it under a weight to dry off. The two pieces will be easier to sew together with the two edges set firmly.
    Also perhaps use a saddle stitch instead of a whip stitch? Use a thread with a needle at both ends and weave the stitching from both sides. The stitching will then be just back from the edge and not liable to wear or snag.
    There's a very good saddle stitching tutorial by Corter Leather here: czcams.com/video/EIGT_RXi8ZM/video.html
    Right, now where did I put my leather scraps?

    I so appreciate your video. I have large fingers, the clover xl barely fits on my pinky. I will do this, i need is mostly to protect my thumb, i had an injury and have very thin skin there and I was limited on my hand sewing. i never thought of using the sewing machine to make guide holes. 🤗🤗🤗

    I just discovered the correct way to use a thimble and I find that the end of the needle rests comfortably @ this type of thimble's inner seam and I'm thinking how nice it would be if there was just 1 seam on the "outer" side of the mid finger... I might just try to make one like that.

    If your scrap we’re large enough would you recommend just rolling it over the top and only sewing the sides? Or does the sewn edge at the tip give a bit of extra cushion?

    • @homemadeonourhomestead
      @homemadeonourhomestead  Před 3 lety +2

      Both ways work. I preferred sewing around the entire perimeter of the thimble. I felt like it gave more protection with the seam but either way works just fine if you have enough leather to do so :)

  • @conniesbookshelf
    @conniesbookshelf Před 2 lety

    I have scrap leather that is 1.1mm thick (so a bit thinner than a quarter) - would that be too thin for a leather thimble, or would it still be ok?

  • @karenmurphy7066
    @karenmurphy7066 Před 3 lety +1

    How would you include a metal surface on the inside of the top arch of one side of the thimble.

    • @homemadeonourhomestead
      @homemadeonourhomestead  Před 3 lety +5

      You’d have to pre-cut a small piece and somehow glue it (maybe an e-6000 glue) to the inside surface.
      I’ve had a couple of my leather thimbles for a few years and never had a needle poke through. Leather is pretty durable-especially the thicker leathers like this one. Supple, yet still durable

  • @No_aestheticly_pleasing_drinks

    Can you make it with a jean fabric?

    • @homemadeonourhomestead
      @homemadeonourhomestead  Před 2 lety +2

      You could try. It would have to be a very heavy duty fabric that isn’t easy to puncture with a needle though.

    • @homemadeonourhomestead
      @homemadeonourhomestead  Před 3 lety +4

      Oh lol sure!
      I bought it on Etsy. It’s a vintage hand sewing case. So you can store needles in the center of it. There’s a spool pin that pulls out that has 3 separate bobbins for thread and the top of it is a thimble.
