    I've owned this game for over 22 years since acquiring it back in 1997. Nevertheless, I only just managed to clear this Diable GP series - with all gold and a massive sense of relief - for the first time today, after watching your video and seeing the techniques you employed to control the Age Vainqure through the corners. All I can say is thanks, and I sure as well won't be attempting it again!

      Thanks! I used to play Rage Racer's demo on Demo One disc back in my childhood. And on 2016 I finally bought the full game. Needless to say, I had a lot of trouble with the final GP during my first playthrough as well. It took *a lot* of attempts to even beat the first track, let alone the others, until I finally got the hang of Age Vainqure's handling.

      Indeed as I kept attempting Mythical Coast, I was starting to think it was impossible to overtake the final Bulldog in first place. It kept being a matter of "so close, yet so far". Little did I know after acquiring gold for it that the race at Lakeside Gate was going to be a much greater nightmare!
      Meanwhile, Overpass City was relatively easy as I managed to win it on my first attempt, since the Vainquire has enough torque to not lose as much speed uphill as other Age cars. As for The Extreme Oval, it was just a matter of getting the Squaldon to avoid collisions, which is easier when there are fewer cars to overtake than prior classes.

    I invested a lot of time in this game between 1996 and 1997. Despite having only 3 tracks, as in the first Ridge Racer, Rave and Revolution, Rage brought the new fundamentals that would be better explored in Ridge Racer 4, such as customization, more cars, a control faster response and more elaborate visuals. Many people credit these points to RR 4 without even knowing that they were actually implemented in Rage Racer.
    And everyone was putting the Air Combat symbol on the hood! I remember well it was being demonstrated along the track, an interesting detail.

      Rage Racer really felt like the perfect follow-up to Revolution. It added all the things you mentioned without losing the Ridge Racer feel.
      Type 4 might have added more cars and some other things, but it never felt like Ridge Racer to me. Though I did really like the opening movie. That was stylish and well-directed.

    Great to see this game still getting some play! I played a ton as a kid and I went back to it thinking I could beat it because I was just a dumb kid back then and oh boy I have a new appreciation for just how difficult it was. If I may ask, do you have any tips on using (or avoiding) drift? I'm trying to go as far as I can in the Gnade Esperanza, and the higher I go the more the uncontrolled drift is screwing me.

    • @Raivop
      @Raivop  Před 4 lety +1

      Hiyo and thanks. As for the drifting tips, it is mostly about getting the "feeling", and I'm not exactly good at explaining but here are some tips:
      -You generally want to use first person view because it is much easier to judge when to stop drifting and not end up hitting the wall.
      -Gnade has good balance between handling and drifting, so in some instances it is better use brakes than do the drift itself, especially in Lakeside Gate (i.e. The second waterfall section). Just press or tap (so you won't lose too much speed) break while holding the acceleration button, that way you won't end up drifting by accident.
      -When you start drifting, focus on keeping the car angle stable, so you can easily leave the drift motion (try use car tyre's screetching sound as a cue).
      -Try not to worry about where the car ends up going during the drift, as it will stick on the road, unless you approach corner too late or early. (I.E. the S corner in Over Pass City is a prime example about how the cars generally go during the drift)

    • @pineapple_kieaser
      @pineapple_kieaser Před 2 lety

      I played this game when i was a kid too, but i do recall using drifts very often towards the endgame
      There are basically two types of drifts, the ones that is activated with "accelerate button" and one with "break button".
      For the first one, it is done by turning your car and then pressing "accelerate" after you release it. Your car will start to swing wildly and your speed will drop drastically (not sure if grip affect this or not). This drift is a disaster when you do a huge turn then tapping and releasing your accelerate button for correcrion, suddenly you starts drifting and it doesn't stop until all hope is lost for that race...
      The second one, which i used a lot, is done by releasing the accelerate button, starts turning and then hitting the break. It needs time between the releasing of the acceleration and hitting the break, so you'll need to let go of the gas before you enter the turn. The car also needs to be turning quite a bit for the break to do a drift. With this, your car speed will drop a bit, and depending on whether you lightly tapped the break or held it for half a second, the car will turn drastically. Instead of a "drift", it's more like "exit a tight turn". Once the car cuts the corner and stabilizes, you can accelerate again. However, if you press the accelerate button before the car stabilizes, it can turn into a drift and takes a lot of speed away.
      Im simply writing all these from my muscle memories tho, peace

      Look up the neGcon controller - it features full analogue steering. Make sure to set it to full twist and to use first person view. It takes a good few hours to learn how to drive, but in the end is fantastic with this game, a whole new experience. Also, if you're using original hardware and have a modified PS1, play the NTSC-UC or NTSC-J version rather than PAL - the extra 5 frames per second will help a great deal at these speeds. Hope that helps :)

      You know what, I had the same issue as well. Seemingly if you are trying to overwrite the save file, which has the same team name as the one you are trying to overwrite the save with, the saving does absolutely nothing. I guess it can easily happen with default team name (Namco). So if you want to overwrite a old save file with new one, make sure to change team's name to something else than Namco. Actually, I do wonder if this is PAL exclusive bug like you mentioned.

    • @Raivop
      @Raivop  Před 5 lety +3

      Sorry for late response, but yeah, I played this on emulator (Retroarch with Beetle PSX HW core), because I didn't own capture card by the time I recorded this playthrough.
      As for the clipping, it is because the PGXP (perspective correction; makes polygons look much more stable) implementation was kinda iffy on Retroarch back in 2017, causing some clipping issues namely in tunnels. Despite that, I still kept it on because the huge gains overall in texture quality (road especially look bad without PGXP when exposed to 1080p resolution) offset the minor clipping issues, and nowadays PGXP handles this game perfectly without any artifacts.
