I just ordered my first sticks and practice pad. 51 year old 🤣😂
GIT IT 🤘🏽
Hello from Japan! 51, you're just a kid. My pad arrived yesterday and here I am ready to go at 71. Onegai shimasu, Rob-san.
You won't regret it. Good man.
rei maida that’s awesome to here, I hope you do well! You should post some videos of you playing for feedback :)
Been a guitar player 40yrs, picked up my first pair of sticks at 55 ,wish I'd done this earlier
After almost 40 years of not playing drums and trying again my wife bought me a beautiful gretsch set for my birthday it's like starting over again it's not like getting on a bike and riding after you than off a bike for some years. Rob has the discipline and determination to help everybody who wants to play this instrument I Am very grateful to him and thank him and will continue watching him for inspiration and help Because as you get older you're not as agile as you used to be. I'm in my sixties and I want to play drums again and I am not going to let anything get in my way Thanks Rob
Don't let that woman get away!
I'm more agile than I used to be more of a matter of if just stop doing things and then do you like a cripple with no muscular development
Doing the same. 20 years. Kept a custom Pork Pie snare built in 1998. Just ordered parts to repair it and I’m on the road to recovery
hows it going so far?
@@Rmachine91 pretty good thanx again Rob
8:00 - Exercise #1
10:00 - Exercise #2
12:10 - Exercise #3
thanks so much!
And body else go "YES!!!" when they get one of these right, even slow it's not easy.
I've been playing for years and these exercise really show up your weaknesses (my left hand is shocking). It will keep me busy for weeks these.
"If you're having trouble doing this, maybe you should try guitar." You're killing me! lol.
lol
Lol, yah! And maybe consider bass?
I was about to turn off the video until he said just kidding. xD
Lol it's a good thing I play guitar
Coming from the guitar I found that hilarious.
I'm attempting to learn drums as a 30 yr old so this video has been the most helpful in starting. Thanks
no worries you'r not alone on that path ;)
Same 👍🏻
Wow look at us. Haha.
im 38 and just got my first e-drum kit today :)
@@Excalibure666 You should get ezdrummer if you can. It sounds better than any other the modules that come with electronic drums.
I've drummed my entire life. Drum line, kit, band, jazz, all that. easily the most instructive video i've seen. Thank you my man. you, and i don't use this word lightly... are a GOAT.
At age 50 plus, with over 90days in. Your video's have become an essential part of my new drum life. Thanks for all of your dedication to us learning to play later in life. Your a wonderful teacher.
Beatdown Brown, Im a professional drummer and your lessons are top notch even for a guy like myself....it is always great to go back to the basics and rebuild. Love it dude!
Aaron Dozier
That is the benefit of teaching stuff!
Exactly! Couldn't agree more.
Even Randy Rhoads when touring with Ozzy would go take a guitar lesson from some no-name someone who was local to the city they were in. That shows true class, willingness to learn, and a vision to a wide variety of skill.
Neil Peart never stopped taking lessons
@@psychochicken9535 Better to be a no name someone than to be a nobody!! Which is the truth I mean in music there are those who are no names that are professional players and then there are the amatures. If indeed Randy Rhoads did take a lesson from that type of player than I applaud him for that.
Man, you are a natural born drum teacher! Your videos are excellent...
You are an excellent instructor
Thanks Rob. God bless you and your family.I've been playing 43 years and I can still learn!!!✌🏻👊🏻😎
Hey Rob, I just starting taking drumming seriously, and your channel has been an amazing resource.
I think you manage to boil things down to the essence, a great teacher even from a screen! Thanks!
Watching the close-up consistency of the height of the sticks is impressive. Such a consistent sound.
This is THE BEST exercise I have seen on CZcams - I am loving it. Practiced these a few times today - already improving. I find going back to the doubles after the syncopated section the most challenging - hard to relax enough to get a nice even double bounce after playing the accents.
Thank you!
Love your videos...no fluff and wasted filler..just teaching to the point. Thank you.
You have a gift Rob...demonstrating with an in-depth finesse of 'teaching' and not just -showing or 'do it like this' - style. Love the way you associate learning with BENEFITING..because that's the only way to instill perseverance and get better on the drums.
I've been working on these for the last 2 weeks on my pad and I am really seeing a vast improvement in my left hand.
I'm in my zone at 120bpm for the moment up from 90bpm in the first week.
Thanx Rob. You are the best!
These rudiments are killer! 👍
My drum weakness:
Drumming.
😂😂
Hey. Other than the hi-hat, the snare, the toms, the kick drum and the cymbals, I'm amazing!
😂😂😂😂💕
Love these drills! Thank you for showing the sticking, it makes this so much easier to practice.
I wish you all the best in this 2020. And yes, I am in the process of accepting my weaknesses too, and you sir, are so helpful to accomplish the improvements. Thanks again for your efforts, sincerely. Cheers from Ecuador.
Hey Rob! I've been doing this exercise for years, and it really helped me a lot. That's why I was so excited when I saw you teaching it on this video. Now, what I did with the first half (single strokes) of the exercise is I broke it down to 4 parts:
1 measure of single strokes
1 measure of double strokes
1 measure of single strokes
1 measure of inverted double strokes... Then to the pattern.
Again, props to you BeatDown Brown!
From Palawan DrumLab, Philippines!
This relatively simple exercise literally just exposed all my weaknesses and inconsistencies 🤦🏻♂️ very very humbling! Thanks Rob, I get easily overwhelmed by having too much material to work on, this is has given the focus I need 💪🏼
H
I'm with you.
Thanks Rob. I'm a 50 yr old drummer getting back into playing after 30+ yrs away from the drums. You have helped me work on those VERY rusty basics I'd forgotten about. Much respect. Keep up the good work Sir
been playing by ear and freestyling for 4 years now; I'm 52. Your videos are really starting to bring things together for me. thx Rob!
Most crucial part Rll-Rll-Rll-Rll-Paradiddle/Lrr-Lrr-Lrr-Lrr-Paradiddle

Yes, thank you very much. Seems the Sticking text is incomplete in the video
Yeah, this is what i was missing :-)
But what is paradiddle?
@@stefunkypunky116 Lrll (Big Letter for accent, hit harder here) and Rlrr. This is a paradiddle
@@florianinside5666 Thank you very much, pal :-)
Exactly!
Rhythms like this feel like music to me. Most rudiments don't have a groove to hang out for very long. This is tremendous. Thank you. Subbed.
tis.
Thank You so much Rob!! I'm 70 yrs old and have been playing since I was 10, and never have learned so much since I found your lessons!!!! Wish this stuff was available when I was a kid. So much info on the internet.
Hey man, just wanted to come back to this video and thank you for it. I’ve been putting off rudiments, and this really got me focused in- thanks for all of your great content 💪🏻
I’ve been a guitarist for 53 years, and decided I’m going to try something new. I subscribed, and I’m just going to work on the very first exercise only, and then try whatever you did next…. I’ll be happy to just play the first exercise smoothly!
Great lesson. I'll have some of that for my first approach to drums this year. I mainly play guitar but this is so helpful. Cheers Rob.
thanks for this! i love listening to your drumming and trying to learn!
I don't know how anybody could dislike this vid man..of course there's tons of stuff to practice out there but this is a simple basic path to righteous drumming.. thanks for all you do Rob!!
Rob, you are an awesome instructor and drummer. You are a master communicator.
Thanks for these exercises Rob 👊 Practice pad is ordered and on the way...2020 is going to be the year my drumming improves 10 fold! 👍😃
Excellent! For years, I felt like I was working too hard to get the job done. These three practices saves energy and that efficiency carries over to the rest of the kit as I play. It's really incredible because it isn't that tricky yet it sounds like a lot is going on.
These days I play drums at least 2 hours each day as an overall cardio/body exercise. (A treadmill was the alternative and I knew that wouldn't last long). I started playing when I was 7, (back in '63).
A year ago, I bought an e-Kit and then added more pads, (double kick bass, cymbals, more toms, etc., and advanced voice module. In the past year, I decided to completely return to the basics and start all over again from the ground, up. Now I do double & single bass exercises, various hi-hat chops, and the most important is the stick control exercises.
These 3 Rudiment exercises are definitely going to be a must for me. I'll be doing this as a regular warm-up each time I sit down at the kit for how ever much time I've got left on the planet, (I'm 64). My only concern is that on some days, my hands have a lot of pain from what I guess is arthritis. I haven't gone to a doctor about it because frankly, I don't really like doctors and if it's arthritis, then they wouldn't do anything that I couldn't do for myself.
I really think these three exercises, (once I really get them down-pat), will sound great, not only by themselves, but mixed in with other drums & cymbals in parts and in whole.
Thanks for the tip!
Rich
Cool stuff for daily practice... thx for sharing 👍👍👍👍👍
Excellent lesson and advice, Rob. Instead of doing lots of different things just a little better, most of need to focus on doing fewer things *much* better.
I love your tutorials. Have been picking up your lessons. Thank you Rob. God bless you. I am 58 years old but enjoying my drumming which is my passion.
Have learnt all the 3 rudiments. Have to achieve clarity and speed with practice have sent you the video to you on Instagram. Would appreciate your feedback.
Always great stuff Rob. After drumming professionally 49 years, I still like to keep myself in check. Your channel is one of my pit stops to freshen up.
Another 30 year old starting after 25 years of guitar and your videos have single handedly made me a more solid drummer. Much appreciation for your continued content. This paradiddle exercise has helped me tighten up my LL so much. Thank you !
I had to learn paradiddles just to pick up the exercise. Mostly got it down but not at a blazing speed-enough for a white belt drummer. Going from straight alternating paradiddles to doubles with paradiddles is tough (at first, anyhow)!
Great video!
."..maybe you should try guitar." Spoken like a true drummer. Great exercise Rob !
I love this combo. I have been doing Rob-a-diddles non stop for two weeks, on my practice pad, steering wheel, desk. It’s fun on the kit to, using the bass drum as the metronome, playing it around the toms and snare, or playing metronome on Hi-hat, and Robadiddle on snare and kick
Love your channel! Even the “pattern” is a killer chop builder in itself!
Absolutely love this exercise , kills 3 birds one stone , rudiments, accents and ghost notes ,,love it !!!!!
Rob, I’ve been watching your videos for about a couple of years now, you personally taught me to tune my drums easily to even getting that maximum thumpification out of my bass. It’s ironic because I just received my practice pad early this week and been using it daily. I will commit to these 3 rudiments even after mastering them. While you were showing us these 3 important rudiments I was thinking how great it would be to incorporate them around the kit. I know you’ve done videos on rudiments before but this one rocks. Thank you.
Yeah I caught myself thinking ahead, and incorporating The Toms ,and even kick..
I tuned my Tom's, floor Tom's and kick to his videos too. Never sounded better!🤘
Thanks Rob! First time on your channel and I love your stuff.
Just found this series. Excellent breakdowns with instruction. Keep up the good work!
I find it not so easy do this rudiment while keeping the 1,2,3,4 beat count on the left foot hi hat and maintaining all the rudiment accents and dynamics.
Anyway great exercise and even more challenging while keeping the beat on the hi hat. thanks Rob.
Start slow you will get over time.
it sounds easy but the more you play it you realise how difficult it is to be completely even
Yess hehehe
We got another one boys
...and then many of your favourites are ruined
That was fun! I really enjoy your video. Bravo, thank you.
What a wonderful workout. .I m gonna practice now. Thanks Rob..
THE BOOK OF BEAT DOWN..LOVE IT!!! 😂💪👊
Thanks my drum instructor wants me to spend more time on double stroke roll, especially left hand.
Thanx for the tips. It all makes sence. Im going to do this.
Rob! Awesome vid! Really great and looking forward to practicing this 🤘😀👍
Straight outta the Book of Beatdown!
I still do your exercise with the Swiss army triplets at 120 in a 4 over 3 feel for 5 minutes.
Rob you’re absolutely right I just got my 6 stroke roll down and up to speed and found that it was easier than a paradidle meaning up to speed. I found that it’s all about the motion and also found myself playing differently as you have stated in video. The smoothness and how I do my fills now it just happened!!!! Man can’t thank you enough I’ve learned so much from your tutorials!!! Would love to meet you one day so I can shake your hand brother, once again thank you.
Rob, I have played drums all over the US and made a lot of money, but you my friend have changed my life. I took lessons in the 60s 70s for 8 years from a very good drummer, but as you know the state of the art has progressed, and I always wanted to find a top pro to go to the next level, but never did. Now with CZcams and guys like you offering stuff I have finally been able to fullfill my lifelong dream of learning more. Thank You!
That is a fantastic rudiments practice exercise, I like it sound and beats, I don't owe any drum sets, but I love to learn how to play drum, I have to start practice on pad and build some coordinate and technique for start, this sound has a great vibe to it...I'm Dig it!
Cool exercise man. Once you get it down with your hands, you can also apply them to your feet.
God bless you Rob...Your videos for drummers are so helpful !!
After playing congas and working as a percussionist for over 45 years, I took up kit at the age of 60. My weakness is developing a consistent practice schedule. I have a Roland KV kit in my apartment, and a DW setup at a friends (bassist) house. My timing is good, and I can "groove", but I'm struggling to get my rudiments and fundamentals down with as much intensity as I bring to my congas. My main struggle, beyond the fundamentals, is dealing with feeling "too old". Just turned 66 yesterday. I used to play all over the world (congas, African Dance), and I let myself slip into inactivity when I was working full time. No sob story here, just being honest. I love music, and I've found out that life isn't the same without it. Thank you Rob for sharing your knowledge and fire with us. And it's inspiring to see so many learning from what you bring. I'm determined to do the same.
Seeing somebody learning something new at 60ish it's amazing to me. I am a beginner aswell but I am 20 lmao. From what I have learned a very big part of learning it's "mental". I could pretend to fell as you but I really can't. Just consider 50% is work 50% is mental. You can do this keep growing musically live is too short to fell old. Keep it up :)
Love your stuff. Any chance you can do something on counting - not the same as timekeeping per se, but simply counting in your head while playing, as the 'noise' can get loud in my head. In particular, between 4-and & 1 I sometimes lose it, particularly with a fill. And yet this is where groove starts. My favourite drummer is Simon Phillips (Rob, you're no.1 educator by far) , who if you watch closely is always counting, and when it's 33/8 you know it's a skill that needs nailing.
I'm 63 and been playing all my life. I never had the patience to really prefect my rudiments with the speed needed to apply to the kit. I'm going to get a practice pad and devote time daily to finally getting this down. I know it will really take my playing to the next level. Thanks for the inspiration Rob.
Bro. You are the best self taught drum teacher so far i discovered in YT. I had no time practicing the last years of my life. Been stagnant. Now is the start to develop my drumming
Your videos more then ever helped shape my hands last year. I can’t thank your advice enough. I applied your experience and I am hell of a better drum
I don't even play percussion, but this is so interesting. Maybe I should start. Y'know, 2020. Let's see how the neighbours feel about it.
i love this exercise,is very good for my clumsy left hand, sorry my english.
Same thing for me ,
I am taking your advice and am already increasing speed and comfort with stick control. THANKS for such simple, but useful, advice.
I've been playing drums for 50 years. I started off at 7 with a pair of sticks and a practice pad and my cousin showed me the basic rudiments. I was hooked. These exercises are awesome and I still feel like a kid when learning new stuff. Keeping it fresh!
I've been playing drums for 18 years with zero lessons. I've learned at some point you need that technical training. I started with a beginner's practice book and basically started from the beginning. Its tightened up my timing big time.
This is a great exercise. I have a similar one that I play when warming up.
8 note pattern RllRllrrLrrLrrll
Rob, one thing I'd like add as a suggestion to all who watched this video, these patterns you just showed us could also be played with feet. Maybe even at the same time as hands, in unison or with right hand lead and left foot lead for a challenge
Couldn't help thinking the same myself.
I do something similar. The rudiment on my hands while playing it half time with my feet. Rlrl rlrl (as 16ths) along with r l r l(as1/8ths). I straighten out to just a half time rlrl when playing the syncopated part. This is fun once you get to the paradiddles!
@Cheryl Graham Basically, take the first 5 exrecises in Stick control (includes single stroke right and then left lead and the the same with double strokes). When playing the right lead double stroke ie rr ll, play a rr ll half time with the feet. Basically, it is a variation on simon Phillips exercise where he plays a paradiddle in his hands and plays one half time with his feet at the same time. Change to a regular rl with the feet when playing the syncopated bit. I always like to use my feet while exerciseing my hands, so I am always looking for easy ways to keep them occupied while I practice my rudimants with my hands.
that would crack me up
Those are double stroke triplets
Really appreciate this exercise…. Captures many disciplines without having to practice separate rudiments. Thank you Rob.
This is fantastic my Brother, thanks for posting it...
Always looking for new rudiments to work on like these...
OMG, 4 days playing exercise #3, and I’ve already made more progress with my paradiddles than during 2 months just playing plain paradiddles
Thank you so much for this Rob. I'm just learning and got myself sticks and practice pad to develop my hands and sticking, get my brain working right before I even sit at a kit. I can already feel how much this is going to help because I know what I need to do, but my brain isn't working right yet.
You are by far my favorite teacher, something about the way you teach I just pick up so easily compared to the others. And thank you for teaching me how to tune my toms!!
Thank You very much for taking the time to teach. I started out as a kid in a fife and drum corp and did alright. Then later on in my teens and twenties, I played in a small band (if you can call it that). What I recall is that my beat was nearly the same for each song. I also remember being a tense drummer, embarrassing. So, what I want to do at the age of 64 is start from scratch to see if I ever had it in me to be a decent drummer.
It is clear to me that I never really had a firm foundation to build up from. So with the help of great teachers such as yourself perhaps I can unlearn what does not serve the mission of being a decent player.
Thank you, for sharing your knowledge and skill.
3 Excellent exercises and dynamically put together!! Let's go Syncopation Congregation!! 👊 😎
Getting me addicted to my practice pad, boss!!
Holy I'm _so_ addicted.
Facts lol
Our son just turned 7 and your channel has been really helpful for him! I'm an electric guitar player but just picked up bass and drums to help and accompany/teach our son. Your lessons are fantastic
I still need to work on my timing, feet and coordination. Thank you for these videos Rob!
Being a physical therapist and a drummer , I love that you are talking about posture. During your rudiments, try not to keep the forward head posture for too long looking down at the snare drum. This will strain the back of your neck and cause you to slump sit and strain your low back. Use your peripheral vision and tuck your chin to look at your hands. Thanks for all your hard work and education, keep it it up.
been watching you for 2,5 years, you rock
Great stuff Rob, thank you again for another sticking exercise :)
Just found your channel! Great content! Thank you! I'm subscribed and ready for more of your great lessons!
Bro we using the same sticks the fire grain promarks I love them
Mark Crisp gorgeous sticks! 5A’s!
Man I'm digging this exercise!! Only a week in and I feel my coordination, speed, and dynamics improving. I'm incorporating this daily as part of my overall hand development working on doubles, singles, and diddles. Obsessed with my hands.
i never know when or how to use paradiddles in fills so this stuff is never useful for me. I never know how to incorporate it on the drums
Always excellent, practical and understandable material in your vids, Rob...many thanks and keep ‘em coming!
I dislocated my right shoulder so I'm getting over my injury and this will help me get back to playing the drums!!!
Thanks Rob!!!💪🏾
I mainly agree with this but I also think the 6 stroke roll should be practiced separately with the inverted 6 stroke roll too just because those sound really cool
Isaac Adams I use 6 stroke roll all the time i think it’s super important
Thanks for this, Rob. One of my goals for this year is to become a better drummer. Part of my plan to execute this goal is to commit to a daily rudiment routine, which I've never really done.
I followed your advice from your previous video to focus solely on the single, double, and paradiddle. But I've struggled to put any real structure around it and I need something to keep it interesting. Hopefully, this does the trick.
Just curious, what metronome app are you using?
Such a god damn supreme video Rob. This is the catch all tutorial that I've been lookin for dude. Bought your ' Caution! heavy grooves' hoodie. Quality shirts, supreme drummin', thank you sir. Much love.
Love the Lessons! Watch your channel religiously! Been playing on/off for 38years an always learn something new!
As Virgil Donati is my Favorite all time drummer. His timing is NUTS!!! I believe his style is unmatched. An some of your lessons have helped me get closer to playing some of his beats/rhythms! Thanks!
This is sooo difficult! I can do this exercise when I'm just listening to the click... But as soon as I'm counting out loud or following the click with my feet its becomes impossible.
Me at 4 am :
Rob Brown : "Grab your sticks and do this."
Me until 5 am : drrrrdrrdrrdrrrr FLOW, CREATIVITY AND SPEED ARE COMING
THANK YOU as always 🙏🙏❤
Dorian Clini hahaha
So Funny! Me too at 5am, that's when it sinks in. Great drummer comeback, "If you're having trouble doing this...." Rob, you make it so fun to get better, know all the tricks to keep it simple and the results are so rewarding, I just want to keep getting up early and practice! Thanks man, you rock
wut
Great exercise and fun video. There are a number of exercises I like to do for my hands, but I was trying to select a few that I could routinely use on days that weren't about the hands. Perfect timing, thanks, Rob!
trust me folks....if you cant do THAT, DONT try a guitar.
😂😂😂
He shoots.... He scores!
Hahahaha!
Hahaha I'm pretty sure he was joking~
How about bass :)
