The opening was rough and it made me furious. My brother was murdered. I can tell you that what the families of those two girls are going through to this day should never happen to anyone. Evil absolutely exists. I hope to God I have what it takes to handle it when it comes my time. I will root it out and set it right so no one in my family need experience it again. This podcast, and others like it, are helping to keep everyone aware and awake. If you're reading this, keep your head on a swivel.

I think the call outs that Jocko makes on this guy Panzram's lack of empathy are what make him so evil and terrifying. I'm sorry for the grief you and your family have been through, I can't even imagine what that must be like happening to members of my own family. Stay strong and get after it.

I wouldn't be so arrogant as to think nobody in your family will experience it again. Good luck staying awake and observant of them 24/7. Even with you watching them good luck overpowering a man like Panzram unless you are armed and trained to use it when push comes to shove.

Damn, he’s really not trying to let echo have this. I agree that his upbringing created the base for what he would eventually become. He still made the choices he made, and echo gets that, but he would’ve been a lot less likely to make those choices had he been raised differently. Echo isn’t trying to excuse anything, and seeing it the way he does is a lot of the reason that we have laws to protect children from neglect and abuse, to give them a fair chance at being a balanced person.

My grandfather who's last name is Panzram is probably the most ethical man anyone could be unbelievable nice went to church every Sunday etc Two extremes same name, with some shared DNA. Feel strange for me to think about this.

I think that what Echo is trying to say is that cause and responsibility are two different things. From a personal perspective, it's extremely important to take responsibility for your actions. But for society as a whole, it's more useful to look into what causes a criminal to be like this, because this knowledge can actually be used to reduce crime rates.
In other words, even though criminals are 100% responsible for their actions, preventing people from becoming criminals in the first place is more beneficial for society than imprisoning them after they commit the crimes, regardless of who's fault it is.

Nailed it. Too bad Jocko wouldn't give Echo a fair shake on a valid point. Ironically, Jocko, just a minute or two later, pointed to how people can make a difference by treating others well. In other words, he ended up agreeing with Echo, though I'm not sure he knew it at that moment. Echo also didn't do a great job articulating his point.

That was a rough video to listen to at the beginning of the new year but serves as a reminder to keep your guard up and be prepared, because evil can take many forms. Evil can start with just a thought if you let that seed sprout. I loved the discussion about the red light and the green light. I think it's useful to be action-oriented and when you see, green just go without admiring too long what beautiful shade of green it is. I could sense it on Jocko when he read the book, what kind of action he would take against the evil in those stories. Jordan Peterson had a video, where he said that the Bible translation of the meek shall inherit the earth is inaccurate. Instead, the true translation is: "People who know how to use the sword and decide to keep it in its sheath, will inherit the earth." Happy New Year to both of you!!! Congratulations on finishing your book on time. I'm looking forward to reading it with my kids.

The beginning story really hit me.. It's important to know this type of evil is out here, it makes no sense to try and hide from or forget the horrors of mankind. But man, I get too emotional when talking about this to others.. I just get too angry. I can listen to it, I can read about it but when I try to discuss this type of topic it feels too difficult. I want to make a change. I don't like to stand by as these things happen. I feel thats what drives my anger.. The fact that this goes on and I sit at home doing nothing.

I respect that you are aware of your feelings. but anger isnt a real emotion. it's always caused by something else. try to find that out. is it shame? fear? frustration? does this story challenge something in your masculinity? find that and you will defuse your anger and mobilize your energy to create with it. cheers!!!

Big fan of the podcast. Just want to put it out there that Panzram was probably afflicted with severe borderline personality disorder or outright psychopathy hence why none of the torture reformed him but rather diminished him further into the pit. Would be happy to expound on the topic with you or you can ask Dr. Peterson the next time you have him on the podcast (which I hope is soon). I am sure he would be able to shed that light on the topic.

I have been getting better at taking ownership and using that ownership to solve problems in my relationships (work, marriage, etc.), but I took a stumble this morning. My wife washed the coffee pot and put it back together yesterday. We have a little Black and Decker pot that I programmed to make 2 cups at 0500 every morning. When assembling the coffee pot, however, she neglected to put the plastic cap on the glass pot. My morning coffee is now all over the counter, the water reservoir is full of wet grounds. So I spent my breakfast time cleaning the whole pot and counter. I opened the bedroom door, woke her up and said, "You ruined my coffee."

If someone else knocks it over it is my fault because I didn't protect it adequately. It is also on me to stop the chain reaction, rebuild the line and mitigate future risks of someone knocking it over again. I must own EVERYTHING that happens in my world. Just as important though I must own the SOLUTION to solve the challenges that ownership brings. It's all laid very clearly in Jockos books on EXTREME OWNERSHIP and DICHOTOMY of LEADERSHIP.

Echo and Jocko are both correct. In my opinion, Echo just was not expressing what I feel he was trying to say (which can be found at 1:10:46 - 1:11:12)
To Echo's point: Parenting has an incredible impact on kids, as such being able to curve theirs kids into certain mindsets and styles of living (mostly). This is the "cause and effect" he kept mentioning.
To Jocko's point: No matter the upbringing, everyone has a choice as to how they live and act. Blaming other people for your life choices is foolish.

So no shit there I was....Iraq in the Al Anbar Province in 2003. It was the beginning of June. All has been relatively quiet up to this point. I’m in the 3rd ACR, and we arrived ready to battle the Republican Guard’s elite tank battalions. That was not to be thanks to 10th SFG(A) and a crap ton of B-52, Fast Movers, and other air strikes. I digress. So here we are in the lull before violence started an uptick. Doing a presence patrol in order to keep the peace. About halfway through this patrol I saw him. We locked eyes through the crowd. He was back from the main body of the locals who came out to glimpse the American Troops there to liberate them from the previous oppressive regime. The eyes were lifeless black orbs. The beard thick and black as pitch. His gaze did not falter, nor did he flinch at our meager show of force. He was there to see his enemy. To get a measure of those he was destine to kill. For the rest of my days I will remember that face. Those eyes. The hatred. One week later we got into our first TIC. My friend and mentor was killed that night, and I was wounded slightly. That day I peered into the face of evil. It reinforced my beliefs in God, Country, and the American values.

Thank you for covering this topic gentlemen. It certainly must of been difficult. No one does it better than you both, as that act of barbarism had to be addressed. Those two young ladies were horrifically robbed of their life and youth over absolutely nothing but savagery at it's core. Most people can't understand why I choose to train rigorously. This right here is the precise reason. So long as there are savages who remain inhabiting this Earth that inhale the same air as I, I must be strong for whatever may or may not come. For myself, and more importantly those around me. Anyways, stay safe everyone.

My rule with guys is this:
If I do not really know a guy...and I decide to meet him...it is only going to be in public places that are crowded, have people, are well lit and a better way to meet than going to a more isolated, deserted, poorly lit, darker place such as...his residence, my residence, a wooded area, fringe area, a beach, or somewhere that is not public populated, with other people around and it's always a good idea to tell people you know are trustworthy where you're going, who you'll be with and about what time you'll be returning..

Back from my walk have never lsitend to one of your epic Podcastes but 1:48 Magnificent Jocko come and preach to those who believe they are "right" or in the "right " , there is the problem deep down it appears that he didn't realize or appreciate nor could he feel for others , agressive in deniial and one thing leads to another a small deviation and then something , this is how it start so the responsibility thing is buried under the inertia of emotions , the agressive self assertion , what i am trying to say is that he had so little self sensitivity and self awareness that he literally didn't know what he was doing, but generally yes "evil", the absence of love as St Augustine said , for me it is the inner man as Jesus said here is the real problem, the self deciet ,the endless justifcations that slolwy cauterize the conscience until even by accident a fight ensues and wham , or what would have happened on that video , you know the one where you put that guy out soemthing had gone terribly wrong what if ? What if he hadn't of woken up or stoped breathing or God knows , I mean I have just watched you given it all that for two friggin hours what do you exspect ? but God Bless you are a hell of a guy, good to see you laugh.... .

The predator’s greatest weapon... is his smile.
It’s his ability to twist your mind to believe in his victimhood. If you believe in his victimhood, then you simultaneously believe in your own powerlessness. That you are powerless against the forces of nature. That “good” is not within your reach to serve or know, but is something that must be given by someone or something that is outside of you... He fools you into thinking like him by constructing a false idol for you to worship, and look away from the source of good which is within. Then, as you weaken, he finishes.
His smile is his greatest weapon.
    There IS always a choice.
    Good is sourced within all.

Panzram was a straight narcissist. Victim of his own life. He suffered for his terrible decisions and inflicted that suffering on others.. I don't even think he was a psycho/sociopath just a bitter bastard who thought the world owed him something. The head trauma he sustained as a child probably didn't help either tbf..🤔

The discussion/debate Echo and Jocko are having in the second half of the podcast can be clarified by Stephen Covey in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. There is an important difference between someone/something influencing us and someone/something determining us/choices. Panzram, like all people, was powerfully influenced by his parents and early years, but he was not determine/fated/predestined to commit those crimes because of his parents or experiences. That was a choice for which he is responsible.

Great one Jocko you are describing what Catholics bless em call the fallen human race ! Best pod caste to date in fact . But then the fallen sytems we devize can often take us further from God or the Truth , we need always to be open to criticism to contary evidence about what we have done as Iyengar says triggers our cosncience but not our- ego centric intelligence , no NO excuses . The problem is today we live in such a liberal way that no one ever wants to feel ashamed , or worse guilty. Lets not criticise little johnny. The Minesota state training school is and was not a Christian training school no matter what it described itself to be . 26:00 in YES exactly Echo Clever is the word, a secret desire to get back at but on the surface .

The Devil exists... and it's stories like this that remind me GOOD must prevail over Evil.... and DESTROY IT!

Clint Emerson has also served in the US Navy SEALS. He is right about being prepared for dangerous, emergency situations that can catch you by surprise.
He has seen a lot and explains that by being aware and taking control, having and setting boundaries and making wise choices is a good, healthy, wise decision that allows people to have disipline which allows them to gain more freedom. His advice is helpful, prevents problems from happening and saves lives.
      That is a blessing!

Carl Panzram was a monster but as much as any violent criminal he was a monster of the worlds making. When he was very young he was the victim of a botched ear operation (performed at home) which permanently damaged the parts of his brain responsible for the regulation of anger and impulse control. This surely played a substantial role in his delinquency, which resulted in his placement in a juvenile facility where he and other boys were subject to horrendous and repeated physical and sexual abuse. Throughout his life he would suffer unbelievable brutalization in prison which he then meted out to others. What he did was evil and by the time he was an adult there was no good left in him, but he was a product of the evils of his time, and a manifestation of them

Weird "chicken & egg" stuff.. cause if its always the leader's fault then everyone could always just blame their higher-up, But for sure owning your lot seems better for taking action :) Seems like people tend to shirk ownership when their lot is bad and claim credit when their lot is good.
    Weird stuff :O
