I knew Gayle. Believe it or not, she ended up being a sales person at a Circuit City in the St. Louis area. She would rarely talk about her music career unless asked. She was incredibly nice and humble. I remember I found a copy of the album on cassette and started playing it in the audio department - she was so incredibly proud. I only recently found out she passed away about 7 years ago.
uh....the good ones always die young....I loved her talent. The way she did this song was amazing.
I knew her too. My sister and her were like sisters. My sis died of cancer, she died a few years later. What a wonderful human being, but she wanted absolutely nothing to do with that life. It's a mystery why, but I think drugs were involved
@@pauljoseph8338 No, not mixed up at all. She worked at Circuit City selling TVs and was quite a pleasant woman. She may have ended up at Macy's, but I used to see her daily on the sales floor at the Circuit City in Bridgeton, MO.
Thank you for sharing! ❤🌈🙏
Great story. With her voice she should have never had to work at Circuit City!
I used to be a singer in a Rock band in the 70’s and I sang this song!! I was always out of breath when it ended! But I gave it my all! I later lived in Costa Rica and recorded it there. I still have it on an old practice cassette!! It needs to be transferred to something else cos it’s seen its last days!! What a song!! Always an honor to sing it. In fact I had long blonde hair like hers and dressed like a hippie. I cut 4 singles (8 songs) most of our own on a CBS label. But it was Costa Rica! I had my 15 minutes of fame!! Something I’ll treasure forever!! I can’t believe she passed away. I’ll never forget her, that’s for sure!
This is mine & my late husband’s song to a tee! I met him in 1969 at a Christmas party when this song came out! He was gorgeous and knew it. I won in the end tho! We got married in June 1970! I just lost him in 2020 after 50 years together! He was my baby and now he’s my angel. I can’t wait to be with him again one day!
Hi Connie
😊
My Condolences 🙏
❤
🙏🙏
to this day this has remained my favorite version of Baby it's You.
she gives me chills when singing this song.. The best version by far RIP Gayle
When did she pass? Music from the 60s-90s was more real. More from the heart/soul. Not Canned stuff like today.
@@staceyy5595 Gayle McCormick passed away in 2016.
She was known around L.A. to be a phenomenal singer, but someone or something derailed her career . . . what is the mystery of Gayle McCormick?
@@BarkleyConners Oddly, in my Universe, she was a superstar. This song, in particular. There's no conspiracy theory needed (Lord knows we're SICK of them). This was a hit record. There were thousands of songs released every year that did not receive airplay, but this was not an example.
@@Vector_Ze - i am not a conspiracy believer. I am a drama queen.
Thank you, Mr. Tarantino for resurrecting this classic rock song in your film, 'DEATH PROOF'. I never heard of A Group Called Smith, and I never heard this song before I saw your film. Respect.
My older sister and I watched this on TV mesmerized when it first aired; the second it was over we ran into her room and tried all her necklaces as headbands- we were so enthralled with the sound, the look, the song, the band!
WOW,...…..WOW AND JUST WOW,...……...This girl can sing. Forget Linda Ronstadt, forget what's her name with Fleetwood Mac, even take a step back Janis Joplin,.........……...none of you can belt it out like this young lady. I don't recall any singer that can get as strong as this from the depths of their soul in such a natural way like she can. If I live to be 100 I still won't outlive this classic.
Nah!
She's so exotic/beautiful. You can see the emotion in her face, hear the pain in her voice. This is what passion sounds like.
So true. I feel the passion in her voice. Powerful stuff.
@@MotorCityPhoenix313 Gayle out did the original. This is a hard thing to do. She did it. She had to put EVERYTHING she had into this song. Passion ? Oh yes she put it all out for this song, and it shows. I am very glad I found it.Dave in Sierra Vista AZ.
Was this their only Hit?
@david Ewing Hello David , it’s been years since I’ve been too AZ , how are things going in your beautiful state ??
they had minor hits from 2nd lp Minus Plus: Take a Look Around, Comin Back to Me. She charted as a solo with It's a Cryin Shame. But her whole catalog is full of amazing songs & vocals. I like her more than Dusty Springfield who she is compared to.
Gayle McCormick, the vocalist formerly of Smith, sadly passed today March 3, 2016. Thank you for the music.
Actually, she died March 1st. But I'm sure she's glad we all noticed. She fought a long and brave battle against cancer. RIP Gayle.
@@instructme RIP GAYLE
Rest in Peace, Gayle, you sweet angel.....
She was beautiful. Hope to meet her in heaven...
So sad to read this
Breath taking beauty 😍 RIP we all loved you.
Best performance. She sang with her heart & soul. The keyboard player (Larry Moss) did an outstanding job for this song. R.I.P. Gayle.
Gayle McCormick's voice gives me goosebumps!! May God have her in the Heavenly Homeland!!
You know someone’s got talent when they can sing live and sound that great!
Man what a fabulous time period to live in. Soooo much great music back then!
You better believe it
Every day a new hit
Yes it was. Wish I could do it all again
In the fall of 69, Smith covered this old song and covered it well.I was a senior in HS and heard it while painting my parents house on weekends. I loved this arrangement as the girl did a knock up job The rest of Smith were good musicians!
The song was released in July, 1969. I was living in Cincinnati, OH at the time. I would listen to it sitting in rush hour traffic. WSAI played it at about the same time each day right after I got off work..
Gayle McCormick brings this song to a new level. Amazing rendition of a beautiful song.
The Shirelles, The Beatles, and Smith. All of these three did a great version of this song, but only one was the greatest, and that was Smith, the passion and emotional heart felt tone of Gayle's voice when singing this song is unmatchable, plus the psychedelic style in this version is what makes it unique. The best version ever!!! Goodbye, beautiful Gayle.
Still nothing on the. Sherelles
I always forget how adorable Leslie Uggams was.
Agree, but 2nd fiddle here.
You're right!
I was a teenager in late 60’s and early 70’s. Best time ever!
Me too!
One of my favorites then !
ditto. am turning 67 july 28th. peace
So was I. As a matter of fact I’m still one today.
When I was a teenager same as you late 60's things were good, but I didn't know that would be the best years of my life!
This live version gave me the chills🔥🎵🙏 her voice!
Don't see guitars plugged in, so how can it be live?
And @@johnwagner2119 there are Drum fills that doen't correspond to the Drummer's movements. Synching with the record was (and still is) commonplace in "live" performances for TV. Why try to reproduce what's already been produced in a Recording Studio.
@@johnwagner2119
Look again.
It was pre-recorded. Hahahaha
@@johnwagner2119the vocal is live
Saw them perform in an open air concert in OKC and like every other male teen there fell instantly in love with her, her voice and this song.
Phenomenal performance. So much raw talent, it still makes me sad that she and they weren't bigger. Should've been.
❤❤
Great cans
This song and her voice gives me chills. RIP beautiful Gayle
Amazing when you are put back in your shoes 50 years ago at 10 years old on a summer day listening to AM Radio having that same feeling today as you did then how powerful is that..!?
Compared to today they would say we had so little
But we had it All! All that we needed!
Thanks for the memory 🙏💕
1969 BABY ITS YOU ........SMITH. LOVE THIS SONG. BEAUTFUL VOICE
She's got it all, beauty, talent, my God that voice, she gives me goosebumps.
There is absolutely no reason she shouldn't have gone on to become a star.
@@LKx979 I think her record label had too many huge names and they did not take time to know what to do with a voice like that.
Blue Eyed SOUL 🎶🎵🎼🎤💥
Just wondering how Cher made it big, and this monster talent, didn't
@@matthewcumberland6877 I'm wondering the same thing 🤔 😕
I was madly in love with her back in the day. She was a beauty for sure. She, as many of our generation, are going before their time. RIP Gayle.
Jeff H, If Gayle seen today for what passes for talent. She would find a .50 Caliber machine Gun & settle all of this filth going on today. Here & the shithole countries. England France Germany Sweden. Political correctness is a socialist, leftist disease that will not be stamped out.
AWESOME SONG HER VOICE RANGE IS SOFT, SENTIMENTAL AND OH SO POWERFUL, BEAUTIFUL LADY, GOD BLESS
This song has never left my heart ❤️ What a voice!!!! Unique
Hello,how are you doing?
OMG! Amazing.Thank you Del Shannon for discovering this band and doing the arrangement.
Interesting, thanks.
A very nice cover for Smith. The organ is great. This was my senior year in HS. I heard it from my radio driving to and from school. Nice memories! A lost 45!
Very soulful and I remember when that song was huge. Great voice!
Love late 60’s and 70’s music ❤️🎶
Smith was an awesome band, this song rocks.
Woke up this morning with this song in my head. Don’t know why or where it came from. Been a very long time since I heard Smith do this song. What a voice.
The best "BABY" ever sung and I've been listening to rock for over sixty years.
Never could understand how this group and Gayle didn't explode and become a HUGH HIT!! Incredible voice, not exactly hard to look at and a style that NO one had in that time period.
Smith did the Song "Weight" in Easy Rider
Her passion reminds me of (dare I say?) Joplin.
@@Vector_Ze - I always got a Janis vibe from her vocal. But when I asked Gayle if she'd been compared to her she said "No, not Janis, but Linda Ronstadt."
@@BarkleyConners I envy you for having known her! But, Linda Ronstadt? No. I enjoy Ronstadt and Joplin, but their styles are very different. In my book, Gayle is more like Joplin. These things are subjective.
EDIT: You know, I don't even know why we're comparing her to other vocalists. Gayle was an underappreciated superstar in her own right. I may be exhibiting misogyny, but if this song was sung by B.J. Thomas or Engelbert Humperdink, I would probably not be typing this comment about them. The idea sounds a bit creepy.
I don't know why I even mentioned them. Gaggggg.
@@Vector_Ze - I didn't actually know her but I called her in St. Louis and interviewed her. She said she thought the "Flesh & Blood" album might've been too raw. But I love it, and I love the Shadybrook single and used to own all of her vinyl. Happy New Year 2023.
Although it was recorded by others, this version was by far the best. From the crisp fall of 69, we got this from Smith. The organ was great. The girl was beautiful but they had just this one hit. It brings me right back to my senior year of that fall. Only a song can do that!
There's a number of different versions of this song done by a number of different bands, but Imo Gayle McCormick here & Smith's version is by far the best. Gayle, this band, & this song were quite popular back in the day. Gayle was both talented & pretty. Sad to think she's gone now. *
WOW!!! This lady blowed my hair back!! What an awesome voice and beautiful to boot.
For years, when this song came on the car radio I would just pull over, stop, and listen for that last "BAYbay it's you". She had some power in her voice.
yes! It even sounded great coming out of the crummy speaker in my friend's 63 Beetle!! Gayle had an astounding voice!!!
Yes
Sad that she passed away....always loved this song by her from my childhood. I swear Ann Wilson of Heart must have watched her. I miss the 60's! Awesome music and talent.
She checked all the boxes. Pretty, sexy and that soulful and incredible voice. Can we do the 1960s over again?
Leave the nam out of course
One of my first 45s I love this song. I was so young before dating.
Had I known it was prophetic
.
BEATLES version is ok but this one gives me the chills.
BEST rendition Ever! God Bless You Gayle. Tears for Ever.
It's Oct, 1969 and I can remember you couldn't go anywhere without overhearing this on someone's car or transistor radio. No one ever got tired of hearing it. They played this over the PA system at halftime during one of our football games in high school. Just great memories. I got a 45 in early 1970 and still have it. Peaked at #5 on Nov 1, 1969 and stayed there for three weeks.
I was born in 1968.Heard loads of music of all genres since my 11-12 years of age as amazed by this new world for me.I only found them now, strange.I listened the song in a loop more than ten times.Class!
Considering all the amazing music that came out that year, if you could hang on to #5 for three weeks in 1969, you were something. I mean, you're competing against Abbey Road, of all things!
@@seanstipsky9473 Yes you got that right. It was one of those songs that people never got tired of.
Great version of this song. She song it from the soul. Her voice though now silenced is fantastic.
She is gorgeous, like stupefying Nordic Goddess type, and she has real soul that comes from deep down in her gut. I must have missed her in her day but so glad I caught this performance.
The raw emotion of her voice is magnificent.
Great band, just so unbelievably good! The phrasing, the timing on this song, and Gayle's voice - Lord, she gives me chills and all kinds of other feelings!
Listen close kids. Pure talent. You may never have it again thanks to computer mixing and auto tune. Loved you Gayle.
Seek out music from Morgan James. An amazing (seriously, ridiculously good) singer and she absolutely refuses to be autotuned, which she can do as she owns all her own material.
It was the 70’s!! There was no autotune or any other tricks to make a singer sound better! She was just naturally talented!!
Morgan James in Palm Desert?
She and Linda Ronstadt are possibly the most beautiful rockers of all-time.
Check out the sweetheart from Shocking Blue. "Venus" Three-way tie.. And I was a major DJ through the sixties and seventies.
Yep
@@3Rubee Thank you for your service. Fun times.
beautiful song, rough sound, emotional lyrics... I love it.... where has this kind of music gone to today???
I would love this kind of music today.🙏🌈🌸🌼

Mary Chapin, Janis Joplin, and Gayle McCormick make the hair on my neck stand up when they hit those perfect notes.
Ruby Starr sings cover great too

Don't forget DUSTY SPRINGFIELD 🎶🎵🎼
Love this version. Great voice.
Hi Pat
If you haven't already, listen to Haley Reinhart's version of this song. She remade this exact version and did it justice.
@@rottdog7864 just went and listened to it. Wow! Incredible version.
Man, she had some vocals! RIP Gayle
I liked to hear this group singing this song. The girl Singer has a way of singing that really touches me. I have liked this song for over forty years.
What power and soul. What a beautiful woman. Her solo album. Flesh and Blood is a killer, start to finish.
I can't remember his name, but "Smiths" guitarist was living in Albany Oregon in 1990 something, our group was working one of the last venues for live music. One night he came in and after some discussion we invited him up, he brought his tele and amp in and played a couple of covers with us, then we invited him to sing, oh man what a soulful voice, the man could sing anything and own it. He had the voice the rest of us all wish for, well, me anyway. True story folks.
It still amazes me everytime I watch videos of her, it was a couple years ago that my grandma told me she was part of our family and I always listen to her music ever since I’ve found out, I’m still regret never being able to meet her before her passing..
Love theHammond organ playing. What great cover.
To the Gorgeous Gayle Annette McCormick with the fantastic talent. She is gone on 03/01/16 but still loved. Rest In Peace beautiful Gayle.
I was 13 years old when this video came out...and puberty kicked in. Had the hots BIG time for this beautiful lady who was singing to me and me alone.
HEY THE BEATLES VERION OF THIS SONG DOES NOT COME CLOSE... SHE NAIL IT TOTAL FEELINGS... ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
legendary - "Don't leave me alone...CMON HOME" she found the soul at that chorus - stirring rendition....
Glad to see this song come back on cable on the TV show Girls.....I remember it when my old man had clubs in the early 70s.
Every time I play this, it's Goosebumps City. Can't believe this was their only hit.
I wish I could carry a tune. The gift of a beautiful voice and the hard work to achieve and share with others is a blessing.
In Gods name, how did she out shine the original? The Sherilles, that might be spelled wrong, but how, did she do it? I listened to all of the people who did this song. I have to say by far, this version of this song is the best. The very best. I am real glad I did that, or I never would have found tbis gem. This song that was mixed in with all the others, is a tribute to Gayle the singer of this song. She put EVERYTHING she had in this song. I mean EVERYTHING in this song. I am privileged to here it. Dave in Sierra Vista, AZ.
They were awesome! Did you notice how they were introduced? A Group Called Smith. That was their actual name. If not, they would have only been introduced as Smith! No one seems to remember that. But it is true! I have a sealed copy of this album and on the front cover their name is written clearly as, A GROUP CALLED SMITH.
Great Great Voice, Beautiful ❤️
Gayle is truly an ICON that represented the 60's culture !!
Most under-rated song ever. Ahead of it's' time.
whaT ? a GIGANTIC HIT by the Shireles in the 60s
It's a remake- not the original
Beatles version is the best. But this very good.
well put!..beautiful song,,singer,,..
Vee Kee. I agree. It was already dated by the time the Beatles covered it. The whole sha la la thing is a bit naff.
This is the version I heard as a kid. The music we hear growing up dictates our musical oponion
This gal gives me goosebumps man, and that beat is great too.
Gorgeous rendition of a beautiful song.
I have loved this version of Baby it's You for more years than I care to remember. It's still the best rendition of this classic. No one ever did it better or looked as good singing it either, LOL!!! The quintessential hot hip chick look of that era, captured forever. It's pretty groovy .
I can dig it, man!
Great version...Tarantino movies always have the best music, along with Guardians of the galaxy.
What a great version!!!! She was one of rhe most beautiful woman i have ever seen !!!! A Goddess !!!! RIP lovely one !!!
RIP Gayle. Superb performance. I wish there were more singers nowadays with your powerful beautiful vocal ability.
She's class. All around. Great rhythm
Beautiful.......nothing today compares to 60 & 70 music
I listened to all the versions of this song but this is the one I remember from high school. Gayle really nails this song in my mind. Brings back great memories.
Brilliant voice Gayle...You are truly missed...
Another hit written by the late Burt Bacharach
Gayle is too beautiful to be human.
The Summer of '69, I listened to this song over and over ,,,,,, seemed it was always on the radio on the way home after work. I lived in Cincinnati at the time! Wow! Those were the days .... 18 was such a young age!
She sings from her heart and soul
The Beatles were definitely good but this girl belted it out from the bottom of her soul. As for these bubblegum comments, next to the dark sophistication of the Doors, they truly were.
It's very interesting that you and others leave the Original version by the Shirelles out of your conversation
Dreamed about this last night, woke up with it still in my head...couldn't shake it...had to see this again, and again, and again.
I never heard this before until today...love it
Hello there,how are you doing?
Personally I think the female vocalist singing here did the best version. Of course that only my opinion, but wow I get chills every time she sings this. She puts emotion behind this song unlike the Beatles version. Don't get me wrong I'm a big Beatles fan. I just think she did a better job with Smith. Thanks for posting this. Great memories.

+Jesse Mendez i totally agree with you
+Jesse Mendez She passed away this week. RIP
+Jesse Mendez I agree, and also a Beatles fan
+Jesse Mendez Absolutely! Plain and Simple.
This lady has an amazingly beautiful voice.
Loved this song growing up. Never knew who sang it until now.
OMG I absolutely love that song...This is bonafide "classic rock"at it's finest and even though this song was the band "Smith,s"only hit song it will stand the test of time as a beautiful song that sounds as fresh as the day it was released back in the early 70's...R.I.P. GAYLE MC CORMICK🙏🙏🙏...
The emotion. The intensity . Way better than the original.... Damn shes in the moment.... i get goose bumps...
She's incredible as she sings the lyrics !!!!
I was 15 in '69 and a friend brought over a 45 of this song by SMITH. I wore the needle off the RCA record player listening to it over and over. I was in love with Gayle. Teenage boy crushes were hard!
I loved this song back when it came out. So so cool! Baby it’s you.....
