  • Alongside filmmaker Josh Safdie, composer Daniel Lopatin sat down with us to detail the creative discoveries behind his synth-packed score for ‘Uncut Gems.’
In this exclusive documentary, Lopatin highlights the soundtrack’s extensive use of Moog One and how he used the instrument to craft the film’s most dramatic moments.

Really? I personally found it incredibly distracting and somewhat obnoxious. I usually love that synthy kinda 70s/80s prog sound in films, but this one just didn't feel right for the film to me. Especially in the beginning where it just goes on and on at a higher volume than the dialogue for something like the first 10 minutes. I liked the film quite a bit but the soundtrack almost ruined it for me. I did like what he did for "good time". I am glad other people really liked it though as the composer is obviously very talented and I'm sure he worked quite hard on the film.

Holy shit. That is a room of holy grail synths. I seriously can’t even pay attention to what he’s saying, I’m just in awe. I’m just adding up the prices of those gorgeous vintage pieces on the wall, like that Juno. I really love Lopatin’s scores. I feel like he added a ton of atmosphere, and completely created the tone of Good Time, and although I didn’t like Uncut Gems as much as Good Time, his soundtrack is incredible. He reminds me a lot of the soundtracks Cliff Martinez does, esp in Drive. It would be awesome to have the 2 of them collab sometime. He really is as important as the Safdies, in his role , and ability to completely drive the narrative along. Uncut Gems was so tense from beginning to end, and I think he did an amazing job of both heightening the tension, and holding back , using more calm, steady tones as the chaos onscreen became insane. Really talented guy. The song he did w Iggy Pop on vocals “The Pure and the Damned” that played over that incredibly powerful, emotional ending of Good Time, was an absolute master stroke in scoring such an emotional, pivotal scene. Glad to see him getting more attention.

This is a top 3 film for me, in no small part thanks to this extraordinary score. Even after this video, I don't understand how Daniel could have possibly produced a set of sounds that so accurately matched the ineffable, subconscious micro-emotions that flow so naturally with the visuals, story, facial expressions... and it's not like he honed in on one particular "feeling"; the film contains a massively dynamic range of INTENSE emotions. The music is a perfect symbolic description of the raw emotions associated with what's present on the screen. This score and OPN more broadly is one reason I've come to recognize the immense potential contained within music.

So much of selling one's craft is knowing how to speak about it in an exciting-yet-mysterious way.
Joseph: "The time frame was insane but there was a sanity inside of it that was kind of, I think, rooted in the new age element of the score."
Translation: they kept the creative process loose & open, and came up with some atmospheric cool sh*t in a short amount of time.

First video that actually makes me want to own a Moog One, sound-wise. Well done Moog. Fascinating video as well. I know I'm gonna watch the movie, if only for the soundtrack. Lots of classical Vangelis vibes in there, but with a modern twist. Great stuff.

Nice to see. Not aware of this film but have to watch it now just because of the music.
Would be fun hearing more about how the team came up with the idea of having that very high contrast in styles, a film like this would usually have orchestrated music. Great job of the director and team deciding to go with this score. I would probably never watch this movie if it wasn't for the score. Well done.

i see a lot of love for Akira here and i wanted to point yall to the record "Capsule's Pride" by Bwana. not sure what you'd call it - it's not a new OST but it uses and changes all the music from Akira and is gorgeous. it's kinda deceptive, starts out with a mostly traditional (but excellent) house vibe and holy shit does it evolve. some of the tracks on there still give me chills 4 years after release and countless listens. highly recommend it, i actually heard it before i saw Akira oddly enough.

This is one of my all time favourite sound tracks. Easily easily up there with Vangelis Blade Runner or TD Sorcerer. Daniel Lopitain just captures a spirit an essence of the music that I love so much and makes it new and exciting. I've listened to this Album so so many times I never get tired of it. Thank you so much Daniel.
