  • Every year the kind people of Conneaut, Ohio offer free Higgins Boat rides around the harbor to pay tribute to Allied forces in World War 2 that utilized these vessels to storm the beaches of Normandy during the DDAY Invasion. The Higgins Boat (also known as the LCVP) was utilized in numerous amphibious landings in both the European and Pacific theaters of WW2. Typically an entire platoon of 36 soldiers were able to fit in the vessel, along with 2 mounted Browning machine guns, life vests, buoys and other equipment. Powered by a 255 gallon diesel engine this craft could reach speeds of 12 knots. Over 1,500 of these boats were used during DDAY and over 23,000 during the entire course of the war. This Higgins Boat in particular was featured in the famous 1998 film “Saving Pvt Ryan'' with Tom Hanks during the opening scene of the movie. It was a surreal experience to have the opportunity to ride in this piece of American history.

It was a blast my friend! They offer it to anyone interested typically during the 4th of July weekend. Also at the DDAY reenactment in August but they are sold out for that unfortunately. Thanks for watching!
