    Okay, it's not the original but it's FAR better than a sequel of this kind has any right to be. The parallel of Norman Bates being unable to escape his past is unquestionably a very 'on the nose' reflection of Anthony Perkins' own struggles to get out from under the shadow of his most famous role. Very watchable indeed!

    Fun Fact: Psycho II was directed by Australian director Richard Franklin, who was a film student of Alfred Hitchcock's and who previously directed the 1981 Australian horror movie Roadgames with Jamie Lee Curtis, which you just recently watched, Jen! 😁 The screenplay was written by Tom Holland, who would later go on to write and direct the horror classics Fright Night and Child's Play. Holland chose to not base his script on Robert Bloch's own sequel novel, Psycho II, which was a satire of 80s slasher films, and instead have the film be a more personal story about Norman Bates.

    Psycho II was released on June 3rd during the summer of 1983, up against movies like Return of the Jedi, WarGames, Trading Places, Superman III, and the thirteenth James Bond film Octopussy. It grossed $34.7 million on a budget of only $9 million and received mixed reviews from critics, but was praised for being more original than most other slasher films of the time, and for the performance of Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates. It was successful enough to earn a sequel, Psycho III, directed by Anthony Perkins and released in July of 1986. A fourth movie, Psycho IV: The Beginning, was released on Showtime as a made for cable TV movie in 1990.

    So glad you did this one. PSYCHO II is one of the few sequels to arrive decades later that masters the high wire balancing act of continuing the story of the original, but also creating a compelling mystery from those events. It is also quite masterful in how they make you feel pity for Norman Bates right up until the ending. Hope you do PSYCHO III. Not as good, but worth seeing.

    Fun Fact: Anthony Perkins originally turned down the offer to return as Norman Bates, and the studio had briefly considered recasting the role with Christopher Walken. Fun Fact: Director Richard Franklin and screenwriter Tom Holland wanted Psycho II to be a tribute to Alfred Hitchcock, and included several nods and in-jokes, such as Alfred Hitchcock's silhouette being visible on the wall when Norman and Mary enter Norman's mother's bedroom. They also repeated several scenes from the original movie, such as the shot when Norman walks into the kitchen and sets his jacket down on the chair.

    This is widely regarded as one of the best horror sequels of all time. At its core, this film is a murder mystery and excels at keeping you guessing til the very last minute. The mother and daughter wrote the notes and dressed up to gaslight Norman, but they weren't murderers themselves. The only murder Norman committed was the killing of Mrs. Spool.

  • @44excalibur

    Fun Fact: Aside from Anthony Perkins, the only cast member from the original Psycho to return for the sequel was Vera Miles, who played Marion Crane's sister, Lila Crane (now Lila Loomis). John Gavin was unavailable to return as Sam Loomis, since he had recently been appointed U.S. Ambassador to Mexico by President Ronald Reagan. Jamie Lee Curtis (daughter of original Psycho actress Janet Leigh) had been approached to play Lila's daughter, Mary. But Curtis had decided to step away from her Scream Queen persona after appearing in Halloween II and being cast in the John Landis comedy Trading Places, so actress Meg Tilly was cast instead.

    • @rnw2739
      @rnw2739 Před rokem +2

      Thank Gawd Curtis did not accept the role of Mary as she would have been terrible. The only reason for her being considered was because she is the daughter of Janet Leigh.... ridiculous. Meg Tilly is superb as Mary and Jamie Lee Curtis does not have the same acting chops as Tilly. She is best in romantic comedies like 'Trading Places' and 'A Fish Called Wanda'.
      Just to point out, no I'm not forgetting her performance as Laurie in 'Halloween'. I find her performance weak, especially when she is supposed to be terrified after finding Annie's body where she just whimpers and fake cries..... lacklustre.

    Thanks for finally getting to Psycho II, Jen! 😁 Yes, Psycho II was partially made to cash in on both the legacy of the original Alfred Hitchcock classic, and the slasher film craze of the 1980s that Psycho and Halloween inspired. Psycho author Robert Bloch wrote a sequel to his novel, Psycho II, in 1982 as a satire of Hollywood slasher films. The movie decided to go in a different direction, telling Norman's story after the events of the original film.

    If you're interested in learning more about Norman Bates' backstory, Jen, I recommend the 1990 Showtime original movie, Psycho IV: The Beginning, starring Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, Henry Thomas as teenage Norman Bates, and Olivia Hussey as Norman's mother, Norma Bates. Not only does that movie, written by Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stefano, go deeper into Norman's psyche and backstory, it is also much less subtle in depicting the incestuous nature of Norman and Norma's relationship.

    They had colour in 1960 also, Hitchcock just chose to shoot in black and white. It allowed him to get away with showing more blood (since it was black not red) at a time when film censoring was a lot stricter. I agree with you, Jen, that the plot twist involving Emma Spool turning out to be Norman's biological mother and the sister of Norma Bates wasn't a very well thought out plot twist. It does make the film start to get muddled and doesn't really align with the events of the original film, similar to the plot twist in Halloween II that made Laurie Strode turn out to be Michael Myers' sister. When asked his thoughts about Psycho II in 2015, screenwriter Tom Holland replied: "We should have called it something other than Psycho, because it had no more than a passing resemblance to the original. What we did to Norman Bates and Lila Loomis was criminal". Smiling, he added: "Outside of that, it was wonderful."

He killed a waiter outside a bar/restaurant after becoming angry they didn't have bathroom facilities available for customers and being taken outside to relieve himself. Years later, Abbott killed himself in prison. The book choice here is quite intentional.

    The inspiration for doing a sequel originally came from an alternate storyboard for the shower scene discovered after Hitchcock’s death, and studios wondering how to exploit Psycho nostalgia to show it. Fortunately, Tony Perkins still looked spookily untouched by time, director Richard Franklin had interned with Hitch, and writer Tom Holland later gave us the coolest horror films of the 80’s. PSYCHO 3 & 4 complete the story, and are worth a reaction, especially the 3rd film, which is my favorite of this series. Don't bother with the 1998 remake. It's notorious for being a shot-for-shot remake that sticks so closely to the original film that it ends up being pointless if you've already seen the original. The third and fourth _Psycho_ films would make for more interesting reactions, as they tell new stories.
    Another horror film I recommend reacting to is _The Hitcher_ (1986), featuring Rutger Hauer. I think it's one of the best horror films of the '80s, but it tends to get overlooked, due to the deluge of horror films released in that decade. A belated, straight-to-DVD sequel was released 2003, and a remake in 2007, but avoid those and stick with the classic original.

    While I have a few personal gripes with this movie, it really is an example of a good sequel to an absolute classic masterpiece. It was never going to surpass or even match the original, but even so, it holds its own, and the idea of playing off of the audience's expectations of Norman's character only to flip the script was a great idea. It really does paint a tragic story of a man who can't escape his past, no matter how much he may try. There are two more sequels. The fourth is honestly really good, despite suffering some production issues due to Perkins' declining health. I honestly do think they're worth a watch, though 3 is the weakest entry.
    We don't talk about the remake.

    This is such an interesting movie - it's that rare sequel that's respectful of the original and full of shout outs to it, but doing something quite different. I loved seeing Anthony Perkins back, great to see Vera Miles back as Lila... and John Gavin (Sam) would have been in it except that his friend Ronald Reagan had become president and made him ambassador to Mexico.

    Cheese & Rice ='s 5, Cheese & Crackers ='s 1. I still think you need to have a cheese & rice counter on screen as the movie progresses. While it can not compare to the first I think it was a pretty good sequel and is a great take on the aftermath of the original story. Norman, nor Mary & Lyla, was actually not responsible for any of the deaths. All of the murders were actually Ms. Spool. When the kids were killed Norman was actually locked in the attic and was not even at the house when Lyla was killed. The sad part is that Norman was changed and fought so hard to maintain that change in him but between Lyla, Mary, and Ms. Spool he really never had a chance.

    Psycho 3 is very 80's in tone and more of a slasher but very fun and entertaining, just set your expectations accordingly. Psycho 4 is creative but kind of like a made for tv movie, watchable but underwhelming. Psycho is a classic and technically the best, sure, but the suspense and mystery only work once, you can never have that experience with it again, making the very rewatchable Psycho 3 my favorite.
    Please don't watch the remake, it's just a far worse version of the original. You want me to beg? I'll do it, I have little dignity remaining.

    As another poster said there is indeed a Psycho 3 and 4' as others have said also skip the remake there's no point in it! What they should have done was re-release the first one again but in color' I bet a color version would be just as good as the black & white version.
    I remember they did that with the original King Kong (1933) movie when it came on the TNT channel and they showed it in color once' it still looked just as good and even more impressive if you ask me.

    The best thing about Psycho II is Anthony Perkins performance as Norman. There is a Psyco III and a Psycho IV called Psycho: The Beginning. Psycho III is a lot of fun to me and has more dark humor than II and it was directed by Anthony Perkins and he has a capable grasp on the material. I worked at Universal Orlando when IV was being filmed and met the costume designer who was fond of me and she introduced to the actress who played Norman's mother, Olivia Hussey, and to Mr. Perkins who was the nicest most humble person although IV is a bit disappointing for me even though it was written by the original screenwriter of Psycho which is a masterclass in screenplay writing. Only watch the remake if you want to watch one of the worst remakes ever made. Great reaction. I agree with all your points.

    • @rnw2739
      @rnw2739 Před 11 měsíci +1

      Psycho IV is ok and I love Olivia Hussey although I feel she was miscast as Mrs. Bates. I was amazed they chose such a young actress to play her as, due to mothers voice in the previous three films and the grey wig, it was apparent that she had Norman late on life and was elderly. I also found Joseph Stefano's script very dated and repetitive with the "Not inordinately" line for example ....

There's Psycho IV, which involves Norman telling his life story to a radio host (and ignoring the "real mother" plotline) and is probably the best of the series after the first film. I think this is a pretty solid sequel, all things considered. Sure, it's not Hitchcock, but I think they did a good job homaging his directorial choices from the first film. The production team on Psycho 2 is top-notch. The screenwriter Tom Holland went on to write and direct the horror classics Fright Night and Childs Play. The cinematographer Dean Cundey worked with John Carpenter on Halloween 1-3, The Fog and The Thing. The Director Richard Franklin did indeed direct Road Games before this, and Patrick (1978). Visual FX artist Albert Whitlock has a long list of memorable films on his resume, including 5 Hitchcock films from "The Birds" to "Frenzy", Exorcist 2 (1977), Dracula (1979), The Thing, and Stephen King's Graveyard Shift (1990). I think they did a very good job with it. There are four Psycho films in the original run: 1 is obviously the best, 2 is very good, 3 is frankly derivative and unremarkable (IMO), and 4 actually tries to do something new again so is worth watching for you. So yeah, definitely watch part 4, but you can give part 3 a miss if you want to. Oh, and as to the remake. Don't bother! I've never wanted to see it as I don't like people remaking classics that don't need to be touched. From all I've read and heard, though, it was an uninspired shot for shot remake.

    Always enjoy your videos, sincerely, but I feel like you are resisting how much you enjoyed this one! As you describe everything at the end of your review, you are saying how brilliant it was, but then saying it wasn't the best sequel. Mrs. Spool was definitely who did all the killings (other than Mary with the doctor and Norman with Mrs. Spool). The police station was all a mislead (for them and for us), as they believe it was just Mary and Lila. So that Norman can be free again. But it was never Mary or Lila. That "middle area" was intentionally to confuse the audience in order to do the reveal at the end. I think as you were analyzing the police station during your reaction, you were subconsciously preparing yourself to be disappointed just in case it was Mary and Lila after all, not knowing how it would all end with an actual single killer that would solve all loose ends.
    There is a Psycho III (which takes a slight dip but is not too bad overall) and a Psycho IV (more of a prequel, but works overall, too). Seriously, always enjoy your reactions!
