To give Scotty the line " Sir, he's dead already ", was a clever move. Instead of the sometimes too emotional McCoy saying that Spock is dead, to have the pragmatic, no B.S. Scotty say the line, in the past tense, gave it a sense of absoluteness that made it all the more chilling.

But never EVER hate on the actors or directors for just doing their job. (cause despite the terrible concepts and writing, there are some good actual performances). Cool! Thought I’d point out that the whole idea of the weird training intro showing Spock looking dead, (followed by Kirk saying later “aren’t you dead?”) was a script revision to throw off the people who already thought he would die. When he ultimately did, it was reasoned that some of those people wouldn’t see it coming, or at least had just watched the whole movie anyway...

      Awesome!

    • @logandarklighter
      @logandarklighter Před 6 lety +18

That training sequence was put in EXACTLY for the reason you said. And pretty much succeeded. Fans who went to the first showings were thinking "Oh! So THAT's what the rumors were all about. Someone saw this scene and misinterpreted what was going on. He's not going to die at all!" And Kirk's "Aren't you dead?" Line was seen as a further fun little jab at a meta joke.
And then when it really DID happen... And happened the way it did - totally organic to the plot and you could see Spock's logic kicking in at his bridge station and realizing there was only one way to save the ship... Even though you're going... "Oh no... no no no... Don't do this Spock!" You somehow know, at the same time, that it makes sense.
And anyone who says Shatner can't act just needs to watch his haunted 1000 yard stare into nothing as he's slumped down next to the chamber after his best friend has died.
That scene and the funeral afterward hits HARD. But it hits RIGHT.

I was with friends trying and not succeeding very well to hide from them that I was openly weeping. I did not even “hear” the hints that Spock would return. I thought it was over. Spock was kind of a father figure to me, and I was devastated. About a month later I wrote to Nimoy, telling him how much the character had meant to me, thanking him for bringing him to life, and telling him that, if Spock had to die, I could not imagine a “truer” way for him to go. It was exactly what the character would have done in that circumstance: sacrificed himself for his lifelong friends and for his “children” calmly, without hesitation. It was not just “logical” as he said but loving and so the ultimate apotheosis of Spock’s character arc. This was the most perfect of all the ST movies on every count. I am glad the franchise has continued, but except for the delightful ST 4, none of the other movies have come close. :).

I remember Ricardo Montalban’s interview on television (Entertainment Tonight, I think). He was reluctant at first. But he saw the episode Space Seed four times and decided to reprise the role. To prepare for the role, Montalban did pushups everyday to build up his chest. He looked great in Star Trek 2 The Wrath Of Khan. Better than he looked in Space Seed.
Star Trek 2 : The Wrath Of Khan was my introduction to the music of James Horner. I assumed that Jerry Goldsmith passed this assignment to Horner. But I may be wrong. Horner’s score was also made this film great.

I was disappointed not only with how stiff the actors were in their old characters but also with the movie basically being a remake of The Changeling episode from Season 2 and the original theme song was not used. The first two things I noticed when going to see The Wrath Of Kahn were the original opening chords from the TV series at the beginning and that the actors were back in proper character. Back to the basics. Choosing Khan as the villain for the movie was a stroke of genius. Star Trek II was another movie that was saved in the edit. Having Spock killed 1/3 of the way in the movie would have detracted from the climax. Placing his death after the battle in the Mutara Nebula was the right narrative device since it placed all of the major narrative events together creating a more monumental climax. You had the euphoria of the escape, and then you see Spock's empty chair. Then you realize the true cost of the battle.

I heard there is an extended copy of khan that features much more than what we saw, such as khans baby. Way too much was cut from this film. The short exchange about saavik being half vulcan, romulan shouldve been left in for sure.
Its a shame that most treks after this always try to recapture this magic, especially with the villian seeking revenge angle. They just cant compare. VI comes a close second to being the best though. The next gen films sucked except first contact. The reboots is a good new spin on these iconic cast except ID. If they hadnt copied the death scene from this film it wouldve been a little better

William Shatner said that it should be transparent instead. That way the audience could see the faces and emotions of both actors and it would have a bigger impact. So they filmed it. Afterwards, Meyer said that was a much better idea than his and kept it in the film.

It manages to stay within the Star Trek guidelines that fans adore and still appeal to non-trek fans with great action and a wonderful story. I really wish the Star Trek people creating the shows and movies today were clever enough to reboot the franchise without totally destroying the lore and rich history of TOS and TNG.

If you look at the clip from the Zapruder film at about 1:07, you can see the frames that disprove the Warren Commission’s number and/or sequence of shots fired by “lone gunman” Oswald. According to their “single-bullet theory” the same shot that passed through JFK also hit Governor Connally, shattering his wrist (as well as other injuries). At this point in the film, Pres. Kennedy has already been hit, therefore Connally should be as well, yet the Governor is still holding his Stetson hat in his right hand.

WIth a few tweaks to the script and a little less scene hogging by Shatner, this should have been an Oscar contender with EASE
It should also have been the first of the Star Trek cinema series.

    13. Many shots of the Enterprise were recycled from the first movie.

Spock really did die in ST 2, but he was buried on the Genesis planet created out of “proto-matter” and thus capable of regenerating a clone of his body. Meanwhile, Spock had transferred his essence (his “soul”) to McCoy at the moment of death, driving McCoy to track down the clone and transfer Spock’s essence into the clone, the subject of ST 3. At the end of ST 3, and going into ST 4, Spock is good as new (except for “taking too much LDS in the sixties”).

Actually It was Director Nicholas Myer who watched all 79 episodes of the original series and chose "space seed" as a catalyst for the second sequel
