  • A Starrett Miter Protractor is a great tool that simplifies the process of trim work. It quickly gives you the angle as to which you should cut your pieces in order for them to fit correctly together.

    Here is a thought from what I've seen: go 1 degree beyond to make it a really tight fit. So for inside corners say the Starett says 44 degrees but instead of doing 44 degrees go 43 degrees (yes 1 degree less). For the outside corners go 1 degree higher. So if it comes back with say 46 degrees go 47 degrees instead. Try it!

      That's great! You'll get the hang of it pretty quickly, I'm sure. I find doing trim work to be one of my favorite things. It's relaxing and challenging all at the same time! Make sure to show some of your projects you're working on.

      @@JoePelayo1 The protractor is amazing. I make wood marquee letters as a side hobby/hustle and those angles can get tuff especially try to cut a 20 degree angle. Installing baseboards can get challenging but your video definitely helped. Thanks again !

    No a bad video. You should buy a camera stand to free up your other hand. .

      @JoePelayo1  Před 5 měsíci

      Yeah, I'm thinking about re-doing this video with a camera stand. It was pretty frustrating wanting to explain but limited because one hand is having to hold the camera. Thanks for the suggestion.

    What do you do when the wall is only 2 - 3 inches from corner ? Or you have a door casing a few inches away from your corner? Cut the arms of the protractor, which would take away from the accuracy. What would you suggest?

    • @JoePelayo1
      @JoePelayo1  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I'd suggest taking a measurement above the door trim. It should be the same degree or very close to it. It's a small enough piece to use as a reference... If it's not perfect, then cut a little more or less than the measurement shown on the new piece to account for any variation. Good luck!

    • @katluke
      @katluke Před měsícem

      Use a spacer big enough on the face of the wall to allow you to use the length of the leg of the protractor. I also cut one leg a little shorter like how Finish Carpentry TV did to his protractor . hth

    Enjoyed your video. How does the angle measurement translate over to a miter saw? What if an inside corner is 46 degrees? How does that translate over? To the left of zero, to the right of zero?

    • @refixed
      @refixed Před rokem +1

      Set your mitre saw to whatever the Starrett reads, it does the math for you.

    • @JoePelayo1
      @JoePelayo1  Před 5 měsíci +1

      It depends on the piece you're cutting and how you normally make cuts. If the protector says 46° then the inside corner is really 92°. For me, if I am cutting a baseboard at 46°, I'd start with the left piece first. I'd set the piece, top up, on the left side of the saw blade. Then I'd set the miter to 46° left of 90°. For the right side piece, I'd set my piece, top up, on the right side of the blade and set the miter to 46° right of 90°.

      That sucks. I'd return it and buy a different one. You'll notice the one I have that there is no "slop" in it. It holds the angle very well. You might have gotten a dud. Return and get another one.

    I wish if people are going to go to the trouble of making and posting a video they would invest in a stand for the camera, it's infuriating watching someone fumble around with one hand.
