I had to look it up, was not Dale who recounted the tale, but George E. Hand.
Slight correction, the German military is not allowed to work within German borders except if there is a war or a natural disaster. That is why the GSG9 is not part of the military.
That is also the reason why the GSG9 can be send to foreign soil without a mandate by the Bundestag. An example would be operation Feuerzauber.
Slight correction to the correction: The German military is allowed to work inside the borders outside war or natural disaster as long as the states are not capable of handling it alone. This even includes using the armed forces as quasi police forces to protect important places and structures.
@@Ruhrpottpatriot I think the first instance was the flood of Hamburg, when the Senator of Hamburg Helmut Schmidt (which is a city and also it's own state) called in favors with his friends in the Bundeswehr to airlift people of rooftops general relief. He later became Chancellor of west Germany and called the go on Feuerzauber.

I think most of the german citizens aren't aware of the capabilities and reputation of the GSG9.
I went to military museums in the US and even there our GSG9 is present like no other german unit.
Which is somewhat disturbing since the GSG 9 is not a military formation, but a police unit ...
@@Uli_Krosse Before germany opened borders due to eu and reunification. The BGS or today called Bundespolizei was a paramilitary unit thats why they could work outisde germany. Today the Bundeswehr has the KSK for this.
@@indahooddererste Yes and no. In 94 the GSG 9 lost their combattant status and the KSK was founded in 96. Still, it has always been a Police unit, otherwise it would have no power inside of German borders. GSG 9 was always a subdivision of the Bundesgrenzschutz which itself was a police force and is now called Bundespolizei. So, rather no - they never were military.
I think the problem with us Germans is the massive distance from our military, as well as the police. Many see both as enemy images instead of the friend and helper that the majority of them are. Many are afraid of weapons and the like because they only know them from games and films. Sentences like "You didn't have to kill him, a shot in the leg would have been enough" show the lack of understanding of both sectors.
@@CalloutWraith Not sure if it's really "many" people per se - I do however think that the people who say things like that are the ones who speak the loudest by default. I do remember that question - I believe it was Künast - about why some perp had not been "shot and immobilized" and for what German Police had shooting training at all ... man, that was hard.
To make it absolutely clear: The regular German police is employed and works for and under the law of it's country (Bavaria, Rhineland-Palantine, Saxonia,....).
The GSG9 is a unit within the federal Border Security Police. That's the reason their name is GSG9 - GrenzSchutz Gruppe 9 - which means word by word Border Security Group 9.
They were founded because of the Olympic Games in Munic 1972 and had been around 200 guys that time. The terrorists held hostages but the german constitution doesn't alow the military to work within german borders except for war and catastrophes. And the regular police wasn't trained to face stuff like this so far.
Then they decided, Germany needs a special unit for counter terrorism and fights within urban area and buildings etc.
GSG9 became famous because of the highjacked plane "Landsburg".

Some slight corrections:
The German border police (BGS, Bundesgrenzschutz) is no longer existent. It has been transformed and the tasks of border protection been taken over by the Federal Police (Bundespolizei).
The perception that it takes a war or natural desaster or similar for the German military to be active on German soil is wide spread, but wrong. Any tasks the states aren’t capable of handling themselves they can ask the federal government for help and this can (of course) include the deployment of Bundeswehr troops (even armed if necessary).
And the hijacked plane was called „Landshut“.

But the german GSG9 is Not only allowed to work in germany, they can "hunt" their targets across Our borders if its needed.

Just for clearance: The GSG 9 is not the equivalent for American SWAT units. That'd be the German SEK (Sondereinsatzkommando). The GSG 9 is an even more tactical (police) unit with its main focus on hostage rescue. They even come close to some military special operating units which is probably why they had the opportunity to train with Delta Force.
Well that depends what American SWAT unit you're comparing them to.
@@broflo3875 Yeah you could maybe somewhat compare them to HRT but in Germany the SEK and the GSG9 are not even commanded by the same agency. HRT is considered a SWAT unit and is also part of the FBI i think (correct me if i'm wrong). In Germany the SEK units are part of the police force of one the 16 federal states while the GSG 9 is part of the Bundespolizei or German federal police, which illustrates quite well the difference between those two elite police units (not even speaking about the obvious tactical difference: The SEK guys are really good but GSG 9, as i said, might even come close to some military spec ops. ) I think when said Swat and didn't include HRT i could've been a bit more precise but most people will know what i mean.
@@Geralt.5261 There's FBI SWAT and FBI HRT, which is a more counter terrorism/hostage rescue focused SWAT team. The truth however is that most large police departments in the US have tactical teams that conduct similar operations to HRT at a higher frequency and go through much of the same training. Many SWAT teams continuously train with US special operations units at home and foreign ones abroad. They tend to have the man power and money to do so. Furthermore, the large metropolitan areas they serve allow them to become well versed in just about every tactical operation imaginable.

That being said, German special police units don't see nearly as much action as the American ones.
The biggest differences between the GSG9 (Federal Police ), and the SEK ( Federal state Police ) is the Money they get and can use. The GSG) hase more funding then the SEK from the Federal states. Other wise there very close. ZUZ (Zentrale Unterstützungsgruppe Zoll; customs) is the Special forces unit from customs.
All in all the biggest difference is funding. Because the SEK, GSG9 and ZUZ can work hand in hand together.
Its not like the SEK is an Support unit to the GSG9. There all on the same level.

@@wolvwwc the Taliban didn't win a single engagement against the US army . And the vietcong and vietmihn also lost the vast majority of direct engagements against the US armed forces. And diehn bien phu they lost 60 to 100 000 soldiers against a much smaller French force.

just a little correction, GSG-9 is federal police. state police special units are called sek and mek, comparable to us swat teams. GSG-9 is more like fbi, dea, atf special units, since all those organisations are com´bined here in germany. army special forces are egb which is sort of rangers and the ksk, the german tier 1 unit comparable to delta oder the ksm which is like the german seals. little different organisation compard to the us system.
Not right, the FBI would be the BKA while the GSG9 belongs to the BPOL

Correction for the Correction. MEK isn't state police but BKA. EGB Forces, also called German Rangers, are specialized forces and not special forces. The only Special Force of the Army (Heer) is the KSK and the Tier system doesn't work with our military

GSG -9 Were chasing terrorists in the mid seventies when I was stationed in Germany. They were training our operators how to get the bad guys in domestic settings.
GSG 9 is short for GrenzSchutzGruppe 9, literally border protection unit 9. Bundesgrenzschutz (federal border patrol) was the old name for what's now called Bundespolizei (federal police). Their highest commander is the German Minister of the interior while the "regular" police force and their special units like SEK, MEK, USK report to the respective state's Minister of the interior.

I think it could be really cool to hear more stories from Canadians or experiences of guys working with Canadians. U.S and Canada have the closest alliance, and I would love to hear more on that.

The net he is describing definitely sounds interesting and different. Some police departments in the USA are using the vehicle deployed net, just recently there was a police chase in Arizona that ended with the vehicle net being used. But it looks like a repo truck tow bar in the front of a police truck, and then the net is packed on it it, when they approach the vehicle from behind in a chase and kinda ram it at ground level with the net, the criminals vehicles rear wheels suck up the net then it becomes entangled and the vehicle skids to a stop.

They catch airplanes with nets - stopping a car is a piece of cake as long as the anchor point doesnt give. 😅 Like he said, cars are a good anchor point because the target wont be able to drag two along. A pair of strong trees will also just work fine. Remember: A big tree always wins in stopping a car. 😉

The police departments S.W.A.T. teams have a newer version of this that they have on the front of their tactical vehicles that sticks out and wraps around the back tires...it looks awesome.

👉👉‼I find it almost a bit strange that one guy here doubts the safety net so much - I mean, to be honest, when have the Germans ever invented something technical that didn't prove its worth in the end or was even a market leader? It's very rare that real German misdevelopments were created. In addition, Germany has its own large authority which tests all materials for the Bundeswehr and GSG9 etc. with long, long tests for effectiveness and functionality.

GSG 9 is German Federal Police. KSK is one of the special forces of the German Armed Forces. So one is police the other military.

@@behappy9184 FBI HRT also deploys overseas frequently. Throughout 2002 and 2010 most HRT operators had three to five deployments to Afghanistan.

We had some dealings with the GSG9 in the 80’s in West Germany when we went on full alert after President Reagan tried to kill Qaddafi and the Red Army Faction and every camel bricker was trying to kill us. Something like that, yes. The military cannot normally deploy troops within germany, so if you're gonna have an anti-terror force which obviously needs the ability of operating domestically, they can't be part of the military.

Years ago ... GSG-NINER associates replicated a US SWAT competition course in Germany, by sending a German film crew to the US location pretending 2 DO an "interest piece" on the event ... Approx a week later, the GS goofs won the event hands down & zipped out of the US B4 their Paulaner lost it's head. F-sticks
