Self Portrait - Cinematic Blender Animation

- "Self-Portrait"
is an 100% CGI animated short made by me using tools such as Blender, Marvelous Designer, Iclone 8, Axis Studio, Davinci Resolve and more. The concept might have been a little too ambitious as its quite long and took me around 8 months to complete but I managed to get it done just in time for my 18th birthday. I really wanted to create something that incorporated my love of filmmaking and allowed me to both explore artistic concepts and styles, and practice my lighting, cinematography, editing and sound.

i'm so glad for the younger generation that such powerful software is easily available. when i first got a camcorder as a present 24 years ago and started filming, it was absolutely unthinkable to make even the slightest 3d animation on a "normal" computer. when i started editing on the pc, there was no youtube and hardly any tutorials on how to do things. you had to teach yourself everything and when you had questions, you were often left alone. it's so cool to see what you newcomers are doing. my hat's off to you!

Thanks man, my channel doesn't really have an audience for anything else other than tutorials when really sucks. But hoping the algorithm picks up on it or some people share it around in the future 🙏

Your talent for directing, photography, editing - let's ignore the mindboggling fact you did all of this on Blender and all by yourself for a moment - is absolutely out of this world. I see from the description you are 18: I seriously hope this will be your choice of career!
I appreciate the kind words, it's definitely my passion and will hopefully be my career. I want to be a film director but for now I'm writing screen plays and trying to make short films, some animated, some live action!
@@_Approximated_ If it's your passion and you're willing to put in hard work (which you clearly do, finishing a 8 months project shows some real commitment) please don't ever settle, because you are really talented. I'm a movie editor, and directors with this clear of a vision are few and far between - and you are still so young! God, how many short films I edited that wanted to be deep and emotional that don't show an ounce of the mood and depth you are able to put in a single shot.
ps: cheeky note, I hope you'll make a breakdown of some scenes because it'd be really cool to see your 3d process

As we move through life we change and desperately try to grasp onto who we are by desperately painting ourselves on a canvas. However just as we are finishing our painting, it feels as if we have died, as if we have failing to grasp who we’re were at all. However we hang the painting up and try to paint the next, fulfilling our repetitive day to day duties whilst trying to grasp onto who we are.
Anyway that’s what I was thinking after finishing your short. Maybe not the intended message, but it really spoke to me. Your an amazing artist and your short screams so much of passion for what you do.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. Might make some breakdowns in the future but a lot of it is done in scene with the lighting. I built and lit the scenes with color in mind

Thanks, it was a solo project while I had other commitments like school and work so about 8 months

BTW I noticed some flickering on the reflective areas. You can fix it by applying temporal denoising (It's in davinci resolve or it could also be done in the blender compositor)
Is this really animation or is this real life cinematography? The skeptic in me wants to yell out show me the wire frame! Really this is one of the most incredibly cinematic high quality animations I've ever seen regardless of blender or what other software. If this was done all in blender that's all the more amazing.
Thanks mate I really appreciate the compliment, I assure you it's all 100% 3D. I don't really know how to get wireframe screenshots to you but if you stop at any part of the video you'll be able to tell something is off haha
@@_Approximated_under the View menu, you can do Viewport Render Image, or animation and have it in wireframe mode, FYI. BTW, I was just kidding.. whenever someone would post an incredibly good animation that looked like a photo, some wise guy would always demand he show a wireframe version or he won't believe it was CG.

Thanks I appreciate it! I used the Preception Neuron 3 which is really good but I did have some junky animation because I didn't set it up right

Blender, I can imagine how long it took to render.
How many days did it take you to create the whole movie?
Thanks man, for the mocap I used a perception Neuron 3 suit but I had some things configured wrong so that's why it's glitchy. It took like a 4 days to render on like 5 or 6 4090's and it took me like 8 months to make because I had school and other commitments.
