      He's the only credible judge that any of these "music" shows has ever had. TV should enrich culture. But these singing shows take one of the most difficult disciplines out there and says, "you don't have to know anything about it, to do it." It's embarrassing, and insulting to the musicians who struggle to find work in America, or leave the country to find work. It's like saying, "you don't have to go to law school, to be a lawyer....you can just come off the street and do it." For musicians, this show is incredibly stupid and frustrating. I think that the majority of the population represents J.Lo's attitude. You know nothing about music, but can't accept the fact that you know nothing about it. :)
      Harry is way more tactful than I would be....almost all of these contestants shouldn't be anywhere near a stage....and these "judges" know next to nothing, and have no business judging singers. I could literally record myself and just play it back for every contestant: "it sounds terrible. go to school, study voice, learn your theory, take lessons, learn how to practice, PRACTICE, then come back in about 10 years. :)
      People need to stop calling this industry "music." It's NOT music. It's entertainment.

      @@alexanderleeart They are completely different genres of music, though. "Blue Light, Red Light" had a big band ensemble backing him, and "She" had a funk band backing him.
      "Blue Light, Red Light" got me into Harry Connick, Jr, and I still listen to it on the regular, but I also have "She" in the rotation just as much. I love them both and would never be able to put on above the other.
      I've also seen Harry Connick, Jr multiple times over the years performing with his big band, quartet, and even a full-blown orchestra, but my favorite concert of his that I've ever been to was when he was touring with his funk band in support of "She" and "Star Turtle" back in the mid-90's. They were just mind-blowingly awesome, and Harry was able to do a lot more spontaneous and improvised music with that type of band. It's a shame he has never wanted to revisit that era of his music. I'd pay so much money to be able to see him with that funk band again!

    What people don't know is that Harry is a prodigy. He was taught by the jazz greats at a young age. He understands the science and theory of music. So when you have a Jlo who "sings" into a computer to enhance her vocals or a Keith urban who is also manufactured you're going to have a gap in understanding what music really is. Harry is looking for real talent and not someone who can be manufactured cuz as we see real singers have more longevity.

    • @robertlangslet9108
      @robertlangslet9108 Před 10 lety +47

      NickBlevinsGuitar His explanation was actually perfect and 100% correct. He said there are 12 chromatic notes, and that the pentatonic scale is FIVE of those twelve notes. And that they are the five most consonant and melodious notes from the chromatic scale. 99% of the vocal runs you hear from Christina Aguilera to Aretha Franklin are based on that scale.

    • @NickBlevinsGuitar
      @NickBlevinsGuitar Před 10 lety +4

      Robert Langslet Any student of music uses the term Chromatic pitches as notes outside of the home key area, so any tonal music will have 7 pitches in the scale it's based off and 5 chromatic pitches. But why even mention chromatic pitches if the scale he's trying to explain doesn't contain any? That doesn't make any sense. And I wasn't arguing that singers don't use pentatonic scales in their vocal runs. I was just stating everyone claiming this guy knows his shit when he clearly is just tossing around vague concepts he doesn't have a clear understanding of.
      (Major Pentatonic scale= Do Re Mi So La Do)

    • @reakt80
      @reakt80 Před 10 lety +54

      NickBlevinsGuitar Are you seriously suggesting that one of the most famous and skilled jazz musicians of our time doesn't know what he's talking about when describing a pentatonic scale? A man who arranges music for his band? Who has been reading music since childhood? He mentioned the 12 notes of western music because Jlo seemed confused and he wanted to start from the basics. He went on to say that a pentatonic scale is the 5 most sonorous notes out of the 12, and the most common notes used in fast scalar motion by singers and jazz musicians. Is that wrong? Do you know something he doesn't?

They couldn't play an instrument or do the the audio engineering well another in a LIFETIME, which is where the magic happens. Producers can make ANYONE sound good with the right "plugins" which most people don't have any ideas what I'm talking about. They do know autotune but there's sooooooooo much more effect a vocal take ie compression, eq, saturation, exciters, etc. So ANYONE with the right look can be made to sound good. As a professional musician with degrees in vocal performance, I haven't been able to watch this show since the third season or so, because of the lack of education the "judges" have. Harry is an excellent addition to the panel, because he brings an informed and accurate judgement of what is going on with these so called "singers". Hopefully we won't hear "you were 'pitchy' dog", ever again. These judges shape the American public's idea of what singing "should" be, especially for the very young musicians out there. They need this type of commentary, so they will experience real musical terminology and criticism. Thank you so very much!
