Just to let y'all know I got the job to be a photojournalist. It's no longer photojournalism it's called public affairs. It's a 6 month long course and you learn how to video, take photos, and write articles.

One major thing I love about your videos is that you are extremely informative one, and two a lot of youtubers essentially will describe their time in BMT as a blur, they don’t remember much. Vague descriptions of their duties. They are negative and say it sucks etc etc etc. I think your approach doesn’t make joining seem all doom and gloom. You’re very positive!!

I effectively served the last 4 years as a photojournalist. While trained as a graphic artist at Lowry AFB in Denver (now closed), I was first stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. After that I was transferred to an MI unit in New Jersey. Assigned to their PAO. I did graphics, but they also needed me to do photography and write stories. Served from 1990 - 1996.

Great video! My husband went to BMT (3 years ago) open general with hopes of getting photojournalism and thankfully it worked out for him!
Ft. Meade was awesome, I loved living there while he was at tech school. There really is so much to do and see there. Sounds like tech school there has chilled out a little bit, which is nice. My husband was only allowed to go to D.C. once. But I spent almost all my time there haha it's one of my favorite cities (I spent a semester of college there so I had a bunch of friends there too which was great).
He's transitioning to com cam this summer and is so excited! When he first got there, he was out on shoots all the time, but now he's at a desk a lot. He hates the "PA side" of the job as he calls it. He's in charge of the media team right now so he handles all the social media and coordinating with civilian media. And right now they're hearing up for an Air Show so he's working like 14 hour days. He hates doing the desk job stuff, so he's thrilled to be moving into a position that's pretty much just photography with com cam.
It's Joint Base Charleston in South Carolina. It's a Navy/Air Force joint base. But yeah, sounds like he'll be gone a lot once he starts com cam. Lots of TDYs and deployments. I plan on making some videos with him about it once he starts!

I’m in the air national guard and it is a hit or miss with going to tech school right after BMT. It all depends on if they have tech school dates open. For instance they don’t have any open spots for my job until October so I am going to BMT next month and then coming home and then going back to texas for tech school in October. Sometimes it may work out in the way that you do go straight there after basic. The active duty members get seniority over us so once a stop opens we can take it.

I came across your video completely by accident from an unrelated video and figured I'd watch it since I drive by the Defense Information School (DINFOS) on my way to work each day and wondered what you guys do as I've encountered quite a few its students around the post. About the only things I've said to the students is to not photograph any of the facilities that have fences around them, surveillance cameras, "No Photography Permitted" signs, electronic keypads on the doors, or there are police at the gates, which I'm sure you know what I'm referring to. The combat camera squadron at Charleston AFB, SC (where I was once stationed over 20 years ago), that you mentioned is the 1st Combat Camera Squadron and yes, they deploy everywhere, all of the time, according to a former co-worker who was married to a girl from that unit. If you want to become aircrew rated so you can be one of the people who takes photographs from aircraft while in flight, that's the unit to get assigned to.

Thanks to the assignment gods.... i didn't get station in the northern states. Guam, new mexico, korea and west texas. And traveled to many places as a security police. Now security forces. You got a bright future, don't let the north get under your skin. I'm grateful for all the people and places.

Thank you for all the info you provide in this video. I'm in the process of joining the Navy and originally REALLY wanted a Mass Comm Specialist job (the equivalent of AF's Photojournalist with additional graphic design skills), but I'm reconsidering now because what's most important to me is advancing in rank as fast as possible... and the more you advance, the less of your original job duties you do (in theory)... and the more supervisory your duties become (so job assignment almost becomes irrelevant or a moot point). I feel like I could do my photography/graphic design interests as a side (freelance) job... instead of trying to make it my military career. I'd like your thoughts on this... the changes in job duties as you advance in rank and how much that may weigh on one's decision (of which job to choose) and their experience in their field of work.

I’m so thankful that I found your videos, I’m very big on preparing myself beforehand and I don’t turn 18 until next year so I have a whole year before I can enlist. Your videos have saved me the stress lol ! Anyways, I was going to ask you: Are you required to go to college when enlisted ?

Hey Elora! I really enjoy your videos! I'm probably not part of your usual demographic--40+ yr old teacher/mom with 3 kids! haha. I found you when searching CZcams to learn more about USAF/USCG/all military branches in general. I believe the Air Force hair tutorial popped up first--it was really interesting! I always wondered how you all achieved such smooth hair with a perfect bun. :) As a teacher, I'm always on the lookout for possible career fields for my students & I know very little about the military sadly. I've learned so much from your videos! (4 yr commitment, NOT 6 yr. Start with a 4-year commitment!)
I do have a question but I don't see an email to reach you so hoping leaving a comment here will work. In the USAF, I know you are working in photojournalism. What kind of equipment are you using on a regular basis? Do you ever film & edit videos? (Or perhaps that is more in line with Broadcast Journalism?) If you were not in photojournalism, is there another career in the USAF that interests you? Finally, I was also curious if you or the Air Force in general used small UAVs (drones) to film or take photos? I tried Googling that answer but it thinks I am looking for those super large UAVs the military uses--the ones that are the size of small planes. I was curious if the Air Force or photojournalists in the AF used small, handheld drones for photography or filming? It seems like photography, in general, is expanding into the handheld drone market & was curious if that kind of photography/filming was an option in the USAF. Thanks for any insight you might have! Thank you also for your service! I know being stationed in North Dakota must be rough (brrrrr!) but there are many of us out here that "see you" & appreciate all that you do!

Hi there! I'd love to answer your questions, if you have any other than the ones on here my email is elorajean.business@gmail.com. ANYWAYS
-The equipment I use regularly include digital single-lens reflex cameras (DSLR), Adobe and Microsoft software, and other miscellaneous camera gear like lights, tripods, flashes, etc.
-My primary job is not video, but I am learning to film and edit videos because the broadcast&photojouranlist career fields are merging within the next few years.
-If I was not a photojournalist, there aren't really any other artistic jobs, but I would most likely be into loadmaster, primarily because that job would take me across the world. It's a lot of math, and physical labor, but you travel with the cargo I'm pretty sure, so you're always flying.
-My office does not use any sort of drones to gather photos and videos, just because we don't have any, but I'm pretty sure there are some offices who use this technology. One of my coworkers requested we purchase a drone for certain projects that would benefit from it, it's just a matter of waiting for our budget to approve.
      I hope that helps!
