How to Understitch a Facing or a Lining

- In today's video I'm going to be showing you how to understitch. Understitching is a technique that is most often used when sewing woven fabric garments but occasionally with knit fabrics as well. It's mostly used when you are sewing a facing, a lining or an in-seam pocket. The purpose of understitching is to keep those parts of the garments hidden and out of view.
It's actually very simple to sew an understitch. All you do is sew a straight stitch to attach the seam allowance to the facing (or lining or pocket). Because this is such a simple technique, I think people are often tempted to skip it altogether. But, I really recommend that you do not skip the understitching because it will help you make a more refined, dare I say, professional looking garment.

Thank you so much for the tutorial, I truly do appreciate it. Currently, I am working on a crop top pattern, and it requires me to understitching. Your video was very helpful.
Thanks so much for this refresher! It's been a few years since I've done much sewing and this was a great explanation and tutorial. Thank you!
Thank you for this tutorial. So many sew along videos rush over the understitch portion, and I needed to see more clearly where to stitch.
Glad it was helpful!
The best tutorial on this, hands down! Thank you!
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Great tutorial! I always understitch. It's so important 👏
So true!
I love this 😍😍
Thanks for the help.
Thank you, you're the first person that told me that I don't have to understich all the way and I can do it on the wrong side. I kept messing the narrow corner - now I know why 🥲
Thank you!
I want to start sewing garments. Any tutorials on sewing tips, reading patterns, processes, would be wonderful, thank you
Great suggestions! I have a playlist with my videos of sewing tips here: czcams.com/play/PLKj1-Kcnc_DEFlq3x90QOO7qV2elVQQ8W.html
I haven't done one about reading patterns yet though.

When understitching how do you sew straight without a guide?
Hi, thank you for the video. I dont seem to be able to find any that shows us how to understitch when a bodice is inside out and there is no way to open up the lining and the facing because all sides are stitched apart from the hand wide opening at the base of the bodice to turn the whole thing back the right way out. I am using the New Look patron D0593 and some of the instructions are in the wrong order when it comes to understitching it seems. If I'm making any sense to you, would you have a video for that stage of understitching? Thanks I advance.
In many cases you won't be able to understitch the entire seam and you just stitch as far as possible until it becomes too difficult. That's a bummer about the instructions. It might be too late now to understitch. You could topstitch, if you like.
@@SewDIY hi, that's what I ended up doing ...3 times...picking the corners out as it went into a curve and giving it another go.. .such an awkward step to do. The style is better with the understitch than a top stitch unfortunately...the finish is nice and crisp, topstitch would not give it the same effect. Thanks for coming back to me though, really appreciate it. Have a good day!
But how do you add a lining? Do you stitch the seam allowance on the lining to the allowance on the sheep fabric??
If you're using a lining instead of a facing, then you under stitch the seam allowance to the lining fabric.
No. Can’t figure it out.
Hi Karen, Is there a particular section that you're struggling with?
I always thought under stitch and edge stitching was for lining only? It looks like the under stitch really strengthens the garments edges when now adding lining?
