Yo this video is SO good. Compressors have been something I've seen in lots of things but mainly video editing tools. I've always seen it and wondered, "Wtf is a compressor?" And at the same time I wondered if there was something that could normalize the volume of tracks. This video solved both of those questions at the same time and I feel like I fully understand what a compressor does and how to use it for my applications. Thank you sir, your videos are art.

Thats a good question! The attack setting on a compressor is actually pretty counter-intuitive because -- the shorter the compressors attack, the longer the sounds attack. It's an opposite force. You use a quick attack compressor to shave off the sharp attack of a snare or hi-hat

Sweet video, the visuals and production are really well done. I feel like I know enough about compression at this point to know what it's doing in theory, I just have trouble hearing it in practice unless it's set to something super obvious. Most of the time, I'll just be watching meters and assume it's doing the right thing. I'm bad at mixing. :P
Really good explanation! If I get this right, for a specific threshold and compression ratio, the gain reduction applied is not static but depends on how much the input signal exceeds the threshold. Is this calculated on a sample-by sample basis or a time-window is used?
i dont understand how the release work as hard as i try it makes no sence to me because you said that the only signal is afected is the one thats upon the threshold . so if the signal doesnt across the threshold is not afected, then why is there the release .
