  • The Prius V was a surprising vehicle to me. It had unbelievable utility, space, and efficiency. This is a great vehicle for short and long distances for small families. I want one.

    Our family purchased a 2014 model V new and we had "ZERO" issues with the vehicle. We do oil changes at 5k, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter, windshield blades and no brake change with 68,000 miles. Spark plug change is due at 120,000 miles. We are averaging 46 MPG. Thumbs up.

      As a user of the 2013 model, it's very practical and can last a very long time in terms of mileage with enough maintenance. Yes, it has a butt load of space but it's not really a replacement for a small pick-up truck. When you use the max power setting it will significantly decrease its MPG because it derives its power only from gasoline. On "ECO" mode, this is where the true Hybrid system is utilized and greatly increases the MPG from 9-10 on average from power mode to 29-30 on average (personal experience on city streets) when using ECO mode. However, EV mode exclusively derives power from the electric battery system which is somewhat small. To be honest, I don't use EV mode that often because of the rate of electric power usage when driving on it, which is expected. Acceleration is quick and best in POWER mode because it's using only gasoline to throttle it; best for heavy loads or hilly areas. Acceleration on ECO mode is noticeably slower which can be quite a challenge to navigate when dealing with tight situations where you have to think on the fly.
      Of course, the hybrid system on ECO mode shines very well when you go at a constant speed and no longer require more acceleration. This is because the electric battery can charge itself when your brakes are slowly applied and because (while at a constant speed) your car will exclusively use the electric battery to derive its power.
      The plastic interiors for storage are to be expected because it's not really made for heavy duty, but with enough creativity you can create very nice storage solutions as I have done.
      I'm currently learning how to replace all 4 brakes by hand, so that should be very interesting to see how to make a good vehicle last longer.

    Know why this car is beautiful? Same reason a sailboat it beautiful. The lines are a response to airflow, to forces of nature and nothing more. No trendy slashes on the body, which these days change from year to year. Super classic. Stood the test of time very well. I bought one of these 20,000 miles ago, and I am still in love. Really solid feeling. Corners flat, damps the bumps well. Great visibility. Only one thing I would change. Reduce the road noise at highway speed.

    Losing 5-7mpg over the base Prius seems like a fair trade off for all that more useable room you get in return. Extending the roofline just that little bit and adding a true hatchback does a lot for practicality. In my eyes this seems like the perfect do-all commuter/people hauler vehicle. Its too bad toyota discontinued this model because they believed it cut into their rav4 hybrid sales. The proof is how well the V model holds its value on the used market.

    Excellent review. The Prius C I kind of had a bad experience with. I found it to be very cheap and flimsy and suspension sucks. I obliterated the front end and lucky to not be injured. After hitting someone from behind at 30 mph just got absolutely crushed the Prius standard or V would hold up much better in an accident plus butter cargo space than c.

    • @coreyisabigpushover
      @coreyisabigpushover Před 8 měsíci

      The Prius C is the Yaris chassis so that's why it feels cheap. To some extent, the front end is SUPPOSED to crush in to absorb the forces. The cabin itself is reinforced. But you are correct that a bigger car is likely to be safer.

    Howdy, I’ve been recently looking to buy a Prius V. From what I’ve been hearing is that these vehicles start going downhill around 150k miles with EGR/head gasket issues and eventually around 200k they need a completely new engine. Now I don’t know how true this is because I haven’t gathered enough info from enough people but I’m curious if you’ve experienced any of these issues?

    • @alanrussell6678
      @alanrussell6678 Před rokem +1

      Not sure how many data points to support that 200K mark. 200K miles for a 2014 would be considerably higher than normal driving at 20K/year.

      If you can't get service records it's roll of the dice on these as far as head gasket and egr issues. Buying with more than 100000 miles and no service records is a gamble especially what people are asking for them.
