Gamestop.com has Retro Games Now but the Prices Kinda Suck

  • AlphaOmegaSin talks about Gamestop launching retro games to be sold on their site. Gamestop.com is now offering NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Dreamcast and PS1 games as well as consoles. I compared the selling prices on Ebay to what Gamestop has their classic games listed for, needless to say a Gamestop rant was in order.

Playful Fruit I live in a rather large city. You know how many Mom and Pop game shops are still open? 2! Yet we have 4 EB games. Most people take their crap to EB games because of brand recognition alone. It kills the smaller stores inventory for used current gen or even last gen console games. It breaks my heart, especially when the M&P shops offer more trade money for games.

Playful Fruit You have no idea. I live close to one of the largest cities in Canada, and it has 14 EB Games inside it, and a total of 76 in it's surrounding area. 4 doesn't seem so bad now does it?

***** Ive seen Chrono Trigger for $100+ for a complete one. The Cart alone on E-bay runs about $50 on average. Better to get the DS version for about 30 if you have a DS/3DS. I am pretty sure it is on E-shop or PSN as well. Or there is always emulation. I don't like to advocate it; but if you can't afford to buy a vintage game or are unable to find it? Sometimes its the only viable way to enjoy a classic. Digital distribution makes that a bit easier. Can find a lot of vintage Sega games on Steam. I picked up Vectorman 2, Sonic 2, Comix Zone, and Shining Force for about $1.50 each.

I vote we break up Gamestop and reform it back into EB Games and have it where they you know, actually gave a shit about gamers.
But on this, it just keeps solidifying my theory that eventually Gamestop is gonna collapse in on itself cause they're ether 1. Ignoring the people who built up their business or 2. Making dumbass decision after dumbass decision (though the two are not mutually exclusive).
Target, Best Buy, and Walmart should learn from this and take in retro games cause if I went in and saw a copy of say "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie" for the SNES I'd buy this shit just on impulse. Alot of people don't seem to get that we LIKE retro games, we LIKE to revist the games we played as kids.

Likely I'll never see those again. If not for the fact that my Snes controls are fucked (yeah, not done the greatest of jobs of keeping them intact), I'd be playing at least Super Metroid on the console and not now and then on an emulator.

It's not the average consumer's problem if a company(if it even exists anymore) doesn't make their games available for sale on e-shop or PSN and make money. The company doesn't lose money from someone pirating it. Not anyone can pay 300$ for Hagane or Ninja Five-O.

WTF!? These prices are insane. Look at Conker's Bad Fur Day, costs *$80*. Fuck that. In fact, the memorable titles, are the ones that cost a lot.
Now before anyone mentions stuff, like, those games are in good condition, there's this nice spot at a Flea Market, Gamerz Paradise, they sell classic stuff too, but at least the prices are understandable, I bought a few PS1 games that cost $8 or so(which came with the case & manual btw), some GameCube games that cost $12, some NES & Sega Genesis games cost $6 or so. Some Xbox titles cost $15, GTA San Andreas, for the Xbox, cost $20, and that's understandable too. Only the big name games like Punch Out, or Mario, cost $20 or so, and they're behind the counter, and that's understandable too. The consoles, they cost $60 or so.
But GameStop's prices, better get changed *fast*. The only prices that are understandable, are the classic consoles, costing $60, or even lower than that, $50, $40 or $35, so they got the console prices right. *All* of those old games, should cost up to $10, with the memorable ones like Mario, Final Fantasy VII, etc., costing $15 at best. If the prices were like that, they'd sell quick.

    • @Walt_Xander94
      @Walt_Xander94 Před 9 lety

***** Its better if the games sell quick, at least GameStop would make profit off it, than be stuck with a stock of classic games & consoles that no one buys because of the insane prices, so it would've been a waste of money getting those games & consoles in the first place.

I refuse to pay $80 for a 14-year old, used game, and I cannot believe you're trying to defend it. That price is bullshit. Current games already cost $60, these old games shouldn't even be near that same price point.
Its not like Conker is a rare game, I can understand stuff like the Nintendo World Championship, Action 52, and Cheetahmen 2 cartridges demanding high prices, those things are actually rare.
But Conker's Bad Fur Day, a game that was actually sold in stores. Nintendo & Rare back in 2001, already gotten the money from people who bought the game at retail price, so why should we have to pay even more? Its not like Nintendo & Rare will get any money from it, the game is used.
No wonder people would rather play old games on Emulators. I could probably buy Conker at some Flea Market for $5 or so, or buy the remake, Conker Live & Reloaded for a low price, or get the Rare Replay Collection, which is 30 classic Rare titles, all for $30(one of those 30 games, is Conker's Bad Fur Day), or just play Conker on an N64 Emulator.

I don't care what YOU are willing to pay. The price evaluation is based on Ebay and Amazon prices that people DID pay for the game. Your opinion on what you would pay means nothing to the community or the games price. It IS worth that much because it sells for that much.. If you don't understand retro collecting then there's not going to be any way to get through to you. People that are older than 20 and grew up with the systems (like myself) are the people who are shaping the market value for games by purchasing them. I had the complete NTSC SNES collection and paid a lot of money over the years acquiring it. However it is worth probably $15,000 - $20,000 and I paid much less than that.
As for finding Conker's Bad Fur Day for anything less than $50 does NOT happen anymore. People (obviously not you) are much more educated on values of games. I wouldn't express your opinion on values if you haven't educated yourself on them. You just end up with your foot in your mouth. If you find CBFD for $5 though, I'll give you $10. Happy hunting and good luck acquiring a collection with no knowledge of values or rarity.

Honestly, if they want to sell retro games, I honestly think it should be in-store only. If I'm buying an older game online, I'd like to see a picture of the actual copy I'm getting so I'll know what condition the game is in (for example, if the label on a cart game is torn or not). Unfortunately, I don't see this happening, since GameStops barely have enough room for what they already have in stores.

It is not just one or two of the prices, its well over half the prices I can remember. They are using a price guide that was online somewhere for the average of what you should sell the game for.

In Austin, TX there are three stores called GameFellas who not only sell old games as far back as the Odyssey and Atari 2600, but also buy at scale price (including inflation costs) games and even movies whilst also allowing you a free fix on disk scratches and maintenance on old consoles. You could go to either of those stores and buy a working and modified (for RGB setup) Sega Genesis w/ Golden Axe, Sonic 2, Mortal Kombat, Aladdin, Unaltered Beast, NBA Jam, Road Rash, Vectorman, and Street Fighter 2 for the price that Gamestop is selling Mario Party. Gamestop is out of their mind.

You should do a video about Fox News calling out DarkSouls. Here is the Article:
    Fox News Legal Analyst Peter
Johnson Jr gave his thoughts. “We do know that she has an affinity for the fantasy game called Dark Soul [sic],” Johnson said on Fox News, “which is a very dark, death-laden video game that’s on PlayStation and other kinds of video-type things where there’s a lot of killing involved”.
Then, on the segment Fox and Friends, the Fox News team went on to further the point. The following is a transcript from a show earlier this year.
“Elisabeth Hasselbeck: Now that we’ve uncovered that this game Dark Soul is the reason for the Craigslist killing, what else has this game done to our society?
Steve Doocy: It’s a good question because for so many years, we never knew this game existed. Now that we do, it seems like the perfect answer as to why video games are ruining America.
Brian Kilmeade: Well, look closely at the title. It has dark right in the name. Clearly this game has some racial overtones that probably has inspired a lot of video game playing racists. It really speaks to how out of touch gamers truly are.
Doocy: Video games like this one is exactly why racism is alive today in America.
Hasselbeck: Again, it’s another Japanese-made video game trying to pollute the minds of young Americans. It just shows how everyone wants to undermine America in any way possible.
Kilmeade: That is a very good point.
    Hasselbeck: Thank you. I know.
Doocy: To reiterate, I have not heard of this game until a few minutes ago, but this looks like Grand Theft Auto times a million from what I can tell. We have to give some credit to Grand Theft Auto because despite it promoting violence, it never promoted cult violence.
Hasselbeck: Cult racism, cult violence, it never ends with these video games. We all thought Mario was fun and games until Mario became a dark soul and started killing people.
    Kilmeade: Now look here.
[Kilmeade gestures to footage from the game]
Kilmeade: Apparently, you are able to invade other people’s games and kill them. You essentially kill people in a place that is supposed to be safe. This sounds a lot like a school shooting, does it not?
Doocy: I know children love these video games, but they’re too young to understand what’s going on so I don’t blame them. Then all of a sudden, some gamer comes in with a weapon and kills them. Yes, it sounds exactly like a school shooting and it has probably inspired all of these shootings that we hear about.
Hasselbeck: They get that first virtual taste and then they go after the real thing. It’s so sad how many lives were taken because of this Dark game. Shame on the creators.
Kilmeade: It’s unfortunate that these sick people are all in Japan. There’s no international law that will get them, right?
Doocy: I think we need to do some more research.
Hasselbeck: So tell us your thoughts on Dark Soul. Should the creators face the death penalty for making this game?”
