I was a 19 y.o. kid from the UK touring the US. Went to Tower the day before this to try and tickets for the show at the ?Filmore. Sold out. Guy says come down tomorrow lunchtime... I am somewhere front and centre in this as a result 🙂
Wasn't until now, after decades immersed in my own music bubble that I finally got what these guys were about, so far ahead of their time. Better late than never. Gordon's The Collective is amazing and I can't wait to see this rock pioneer in person in Detroit
At 3:50 Lee asks “Is Nirvana here?” without prompting any reaction from the audience. It’s easy to forget that iconic, larger than life bands were obscure and only known within their immediate peer groups and scenes at one time or another. Thurston is wearing a Hole t-shirt who in 1990 had only released a few singles up to that point, not even an album
@@robrob1723 Oh that’s right. I forgot they brought Nirvana and STP on tour that summer. Which makes sense because I think part of the Mildred Pierce video was shot in Las Vegas. I thought one of the members of STP starred in the video but then remembered it was Sofia Coppola, I think. I haven’t seen it in many years. That must have been an amazing show. Sadly I was only 7 years old at the time
@@alexandermuratis it was..but at the time I was all about SY and got there late and only caught Nirvana's last song . I remember they were being heckled and borderline booed lol
@@robrob1723 Nirvana were a great band but I’ve always much preferred Sonic Youth. When Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Kim sang with the surviving members of the band, all I could think was how Sonic Youth deserved to be inducted as well.
most salient recollection of the Warfield show 1990 is that Nirvana, as openers, didn't have use of the full sound system. borderline heckled sounds about right. when Sonic Youth came on, they plugged into the giant wall of whatever. this "in store" gig at Tower Records parking lot in North Beach must've been the afternoon before that night downtown
If I'm not wrong this is the time they toured with Nirvana right before their massive breakout. Imagine seeing Nirvana and Sonic Youth in the same show. Insane.
Sonic Youth greatest rock band in the world. All other rock bands are run by little girls. Sonic Youth number one exporter of stage energy Other rock bands have inferior stage energy Sonic Youth home of Thurston guitarist. He's length hundred ninety eight centimeter. Sound amplification a marvel to behold. It remove 80 percent of human emotional waste.
Ladies and gentlemen, Steve Shelley. He was the secret ingredient.
Exactly what I was thinking! He pounded the hell out of those drums!

Because Sonic Youth was on tour with Nirvana, STP and the Melvin's in 1990. I seen the whole bill at Calamity Jane's in Las Vegas in August of 1990

I was there, it was Lunchtime, then I had to go to work.
This is amazing lmao. If I had a time machine this is where I'd go
Kim Gordon and Steve Shelley get my vote for best bass/drum combo ever all time.
Thanks to the hero that recorded this!!!
Yeah I’m so grateful too. We get to travel back in time and enjoy all the amazing performances from Sonic Youth and other bands.

I'll give ya $6.50 for it! lol
Was there. Lived around the block. Took me a couple more years after that until I began to realize how amazing they were.
