The vacuum sealer and the watermelon is pretty common in the "molecular gastronomy"-space. They'll use the pressure of the vacuum bag for compressed watermelon, which kinda smooshes it down and compresses it, changing the texture. And since watermelon is so porous, you can also infuse it with a lot of different liquids. He used grape juice, but it's also common for quick pickling with vinegar/salt brines... not just for watermelon, but anything with that very porous, crunchy, open texture. Any melons, cucumbers, radishes, etc.
@ 3:42.........Nate, the movie that the clip is from is called "War Games." With Mathew Broderick. Tag line is in Stephen Hawking synthesized voice modulator "Do You Want To Play A Game?"
Yes, you can make a whole tent out of plastic wrap, and yes, it'll survive a wood burning camp stove running over night. from the video, it was way too hot after a short time. Advoko Makes did a dome from plastic wrap, Modern Self Reliance did a cabin, and ToThePoint did a tipi. GreenPowerScience seems to have done the first video on the subject about 9 years ago. Someone else may have done it earlier, but if so, I haven't found it yet.
There are containers to be used with the vacuum units for marinading meats and such, that is hard sided and has a valve where you attach an accessory tubing to the vacuum sealer and to the container, draw out the air, close the valve to retain the vacuum and allow the marinade to infiltrate the meat, I use it quite frequently because it cut down the amount of time needed to marinade the meats.
The corn and bread one is from the movie War Games, The dad then bites into it and finds out the corn is raw, wife ays it's better for us this way we get more vitamins, he says can't we just cook it and take some vitamin pills... Great movie.
@Nate Thanx for the description of what using a vacuum bag does. I'm constantly rolling my eyes at the cooking shows that talk about "compressing" things together in a vacuum bag.
Whipped cream canisters are nitrous oxide because it will actually "whip" the cream and stay that way for a while. You can also get carbonation canisters that are usually used to make carbonated water for a bar, so you don't have to keep buying seltzer water. The two products are for different purposes.
One tip on the corn buttering bread: Put some salt and pepper on the bread too. Also, after everybody's corn is buttered, if you get to the bread before anybody else, it's better toasted (but only if you have a toaster oven. That much butter should not go in a regular toaster)
If you do want to test the shrink wrap camp check out industrial supply stores for bigger rolls and the handles that go in them. I think I've even seen handles in Walmart near the bubble wrap.
Love the new videos!!! I would LOVE to see you guys do a vacuum sealer video. It would be cool to see different kinds of fruit like peaches, nectarines, maybe bananas? Can't wait to see more reactions/discussions.
The corn on the buttered bread was from a commercial in the 80's. I can't remember what it was for, but it was screened in Australia. The plastic/saran wrap is likely pallet wrap, not the food wrap variety, which is way stronger, more durable, and less likely to break. Now, is this filmed on a new camera, or have you somehow bypassed CZcams's compression? Because damn that's a crisp, clear, artefact free quality video.
Nate, I am the same way about watermelon. Love watermelon but watermelon flavoring tastes like the rind of the melon. I have a mix that uses powdered watermelon, it is just as bad, it is as if they used a melon that was not ripe.
If you are going to build a tent, use pallet wrap from an industrial supply store (Grainger, for example). It is thicker and you get more per roll than even stuff from Lowes or HD, so it is way cheaper. You can even get different widths, up to 30 inches wide.
Have you forgotten when you sealed yourself in a trash bag and used a vacuum cleaner to remove the air? You could not move due to the pressure of the outside air. So marinading in a plastic bag with the air removed does put pressure on the contents of the bag.
Cream whipers use NO2 (nitrous oxide), soda syphons use CO2 (carbon dioxide) and both of the charging bulbs which are exactly the same size, shape and pressure. So the "carbonated fruit" video used CO2 in a device that normally uses NO2.
The way she wrapped the plastic around the tree will not be very friendly to cutting it off and knotting the ends for reuseability but it can probably be done (the risk is that the wrap would relax and become looser, therefore losing some of the tension and waterproofing). However, trees are really just thick posts and we have all sorts of man-made posts we can use in a similar fashion. It would be really easy to set up a 4-post frame to attach your saran wrapping to so that you can incorporate the tie-offs permanently. This much saran wrap might not compress any better than a typical 2-man tent or hammock (like trying to fold paper more than 7 times), but it would save a little bit of weight and space by not having any of the rigid pieces (ie, tent poles). Maybe you could even roll it up together with your sleeping bag.
The surround wrap (cling film) thing....could a functional raft be made from mainly that material/product. And if so....can that waterproof spray stuff that you sprayed on the tent in a tkor vid be applied
The CO2 cartridges are for Paintball and Airsoft, have the same size as the nitrogen cartridges, always fun switching them out in the kitchen and when they try to whip cream...well..
There's more than 1 piece of bread for the corn. Each person gets their own, so then you have buttered corn and a buttered piece of bread. You can fold the bread in half to eat with the rest of the meal.
I think the fruit experiment could be cool, like try to see if the sences are mixed when you get watermelon/kiwi and try to figure out if the eyes are more powerfull than the taste or sort of and also changing the lights affects the smells dont know why but it does.
Man Nate not knowing that the clip with the bread and the corn is from the movie War Games really drove that generational gap home like a dagger...ouch!
If you remove the air from inside the bag then the bag itself pushes down against whatever is inside. So at sea level at perfect vacuum the bag itself should exert 14.7psi against say, a bathroom scale??? That would make for a good experiment, another example you guys tried is getting your body inside a bag and vacuuming the air out with a shop vac

Maybe there shold be a: Society for the Prevention of Cuetly to Fruit, or Respect Our Fruit's Liberty (ROFL for short!) I think the vacuum bag thing works because of osmosis and is nothing to do with the bag, the bag only helps completely surround the watermelon with liquid. Would be cool to see tested though :)

Guys I don't know if this will be seen but if you cut a hole in the top and put a full bottle of whatever juice on top then the watermelon (one of few fruits that can do this) will absorb the liquid and it will taste both like the juice and the watermelon and u can cut it up how ever you want in the replys I will link a video to support this sorry but I'm really glad the direction the channel is going now I missed the old way 😅😅

Definitely way all water in a watermelon. I cut some up and put it in a food dehydrator once just to see what would happen. Went from pieces that were about one inch square and half an inch thick to just a few small fibers.

I disagree about your assessment on the vacuum bit nate. Just cause the gases in the marshmallow didn't escape does mean they were not under stress. Think structure strength between gas pockets. Here's an experiment for ya, kind of a stretch. Degas your marshmallow. Inside your vacuum chamber put another container with one really small orifice(less than .01"). Maybe baby food jar could sustain some pressure. I could explain how to get incredibly small hole in sheet metal. Stuff that container packed completely full of mm's, or just get one to press right on the hole. Then vac that sucker. I figure it will shear the structure allowing the gas to evacuate. Once recompressed it should have much less volume.
About the watermelon, wouldn't this work?; Instead of marinating the cubes, dehydrate them, then rehydrate with any type of other fruit juice? I mean if you are going to replace anything in the watermelon for flavour, why not replace the water?

The scene at 3:30 is from the movie Wargames.
On the last one, if you use a chamber vacuum sealer not the normal vacuum chamber if does compress the fruit so it should work with one of those.

It is not Saran Wrap, it is clear palate plastic wrap, to keep loaded palates from falling over. Quite a bit tougher material.
