Vergina | The first capital of ancient Macedonia
Vergina, a monument of Cultural Heritage and an area of ​​special natural beauty, is home to one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.
Vergina, a town of Imathia, is located 80 kilometers southeast of Thessaloniki, on the slopes of Pieria, just 14 kilometers from the city of Veria.
The capital of ancient Macedonia is located in Vergina and its name means "the place with many goats". In Vergina is the palace of the Goats, the palace and the tomb of King Philip.
The palace of the Goats was built in the years of Philip II (359-336 BC) and is considered not only the largest, but together with the Parthenon, the most important building of classical Greece.
In the summer of 336 BC Philip II, elected ruler and commander-in-chief of all the Greeks, decided to celebrate in Aiges his omnipotence with an unprecedented celebration. As, following the Holy procession, he entered the theater, he encountered the assassin's knife and fell dead before the eyes of the assembled. Alexander was proclaimed king and took care to bury his father in the royal necropolis of Aigon with honors that surpassed all previous ones.
The area of ​​today's Vergina, which was inhabited by the Pieres, thus remained uninhabited until the middle of the 6th century BC. After 550 BC, a Macedonian population settled in the area. During the 5th century BC, King Archelaos I moved the Macedonian capital further north to the region of Pella, in the central Macedonian plain.
The location of today's Vergina was initially considered by the excavators to coincide with the ancient city of Valla, which according to Pliny, was a city located in the Pieria mountains, south of the Aliakmonas river. In 1968, the British historian Nicolas Hammond, a professor at the University of Bristol, proposed the association of the archaeological site of Vergina with ancient Aiges, the first capital of the Macedonian kingdom, in which the royal cemetery of the Macedonians was located, but his proposal was not accepted. by the other scientists and rejected by M. Andronikos.
In 1977, with the discovery by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki of the important untouched tomb of Vergina, the then excavator M. Andronikos, although he initially had many reservations, was convinced of Nicolas Hammond's point of view, so he agreed that in Vergina is the royal cemetery of Macedonians, that the tomb he discovered is royal and that in today's Vergina must have been the site of the ancient Aiges.
