    “New, exquisite standards” is an understatement! This townhouse is the loveliest Georgian house that I’ve ever seen. Georgian architecture and furniture (also going back to Queen Anne style) are my favorite because it’s so elegant. There’s no comparison between the clean lines Of Georgian exteriors and interiors to the dark paneling and over carved interiors of Tudor/Jacobean homes (although there are some lovely examples of architecture from that time), the “decorated within an inch of its life “ Victorian architecture and interiors or the almost brutalist Art Deco designs of the 1930’s. Just my opinion. Thanks for another wonderful video!

      Hello Monica. I do agree 100% with you, the Georgian era was unrivalled in beauty and elegance. In fact, the XVIII century (particularly its second half) was the Golden Age of European civilisation. Art, music, architecture, gardening, furniture, silver, etc, everything was beautiful. Stanley Kubrick´s masterpiece "Barry Lyndon" perfectly illustrates what I have just said.

    • @monicacall7532
      @monicacall7532 Před měsícem

      Arslongavitabrevis, I’m thrilled to know someone else feels the same way about Georgian architecture! Ever since my parents bought a set of encyclopedias when I was a child (they became some of my favorite reading material!) and I discovered the history of architecture section and period furnishings sections it was truly love at first sight for me. When I was bored in school I would design Georgian houses and their interiors in the margins instead of taking notes. Pretty weird, I know.
      Do you know about the Federal Style in the US that went from about 1790-1840? It is equally simple and elegant inside and out. My favorite furniture styles during the Georgian/Federal are Chippendale, Duncan Phyfe and Robert Adam. Queen Anne style is also a favorite. If you like Georgian interiors a lot check out videos from the Winterthur Museum in Delaware, USA which has the world’s largest collection of Georgian and Federal rooms. They are to die for! Also check out Bret Hull’s Georgian/Federal design videos that he did at Winterthur. Winterthur is now on my list of “must see” places.
      PS. Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, USA is another fabulous place to visit in order to see the Georgian elegance esthetic on display.

    I'm a sucker for a Georgian house. After viewing many country homes (mostly on your channel, thank you so much!), it's interesting to see a town house that could still host a party for 200 people. I love all of the collected items, displayed to show how people of that class lived during the time. I like to compare the level of ornamentation between the Georgian and Victorian periods (though we know Victorian spanned many decades and influences), and find myself leaning toward the relative simplicity of the Georgian. I look forward to your York adventures. We loved it when we visited many years ago. I'm up for a ramble around the Shambles. :)

    • @MemorySeekers

      I find it hard to believe the managed to get 200 into that house really, they must have been hanging off the staircases. I sit on the fence with Georgian and Victorian era's love them bother probably just lean to Victorian a bit more. We have a lovely sequence in the shambles early in the morning when no one was about so you can really see the buildings! Enjoy. Coming soon.

I mean, I know it was lovingly restored and provisioned, but hearing the distant echo of people in the house, coupled with the music and "be here now" filming...really felt it was of the moment of a big dinner party. Great music and filmography. I found it charming that you pronounce stucco as "stew-co" as here in Canada we pronounce it as "stuck-oh". Thanks again so much, to you both!

    Ahhhhhh. Videos like yours allow people like me to feed our addictions to Britain's elegant past. No king or potentate could have had a lovelier or more comfortable winter retreat than viscount Fairfax. London in that time was splendid and full of ambitious people, but also crowded, dirty, and rather stinky. I absolutely love how the trust has staged the house, as if family members stepped out of the rooms before you and your camera entered.

    It’s not Terry Noel ,it’s Noel Terry. He was part of the Terry family who owned Terry’s chocolate factory, makers of Terry’s Chocolate Orange.

    Good on the cinema owners. We lost a historic 19th century opera house in my (Canadian) town by a cinema owner who just gutted the place to put in a multiplex. City Hall oversaw the destruction of 90% of our other historic properties. One mayor wanted to tear down our early 19th century Town Hall but was persuaded by concerned citizens to hold a plebiscite. It was defeated by over 88% opposed. He was voted out next election. Damage was done, though, and our historic town center is basically derelict. When it's gone, it's gone.
