He wrote this for his good friend Clint Eastwood.
It was used at the end of Clint's movie The Mule.
The song was for the movie n the song never got the ratings as should of like he said in January ( last month) now it definitely needs the ratings but u can’t share this to any social medias! A big part of my twenties through to my mid thirties was hanging out having fun and listening to Toby Keith. Not only will I miss him and his music but the history that went with him.

Toby wrote “Don’t Let the Old Man In” in 2018 as a birthday present for Clint Eastwood, who was going to begin shooting his next movie, “The Mule” on his 88th birthday. Clint liked the song so much that he put it in the movie. Watching Toby perform the song in light of his ailment adds another meaning to it, and he sure didn’t let the old man in that night. May God bless him and his family.

I am fighting Bile duct cancer. In treatment since May 2022. Currently I am in remission. The survival rate is 24%. Thank you Toby Keith for all you have done for this Country and the military. And thank you for waking me up from the denial I have been in. May you rest in peace Toby Keith and may your family and friends find comfort knowing that you are free from pain.

I am from the UK and had never heard of Toby Keith until it came up on my phone about his death! I have found his songs and listened to an interview not long before his death! What a man he was! RIP Toby ❤xx
My husband and I had the honor to see his very last concert in Las Vegas on December 14, 2023. I’m so grateful and thankful we could go see him. ❤️ He was such a genuine man and very humble. We learned that night him and Clint Eastwood are very good friends. May Toby rest in Paradise.

Clint was his inspiration for writing the song. They met in Palm Springs right before Clint was to turn 88. He asked Clint what he was going to do to celebrate? Clint said he was going to be off making a movie for a few months. Toby was shocked & asked him what keeps him going? Clint's response, "I get up every day & I don't let the old man in". Toby knew he had a song in that line. Then put together the song for Clint's movie, "The Mule". He said it was one of the best times of his life writing this song.

Seeing him perform last September 2023 brought tears to my eyes, especially after the recent loss of my son. Although he was tired and worn from his battle with cancer, his voice was as smooth as butter. You leave a lasting legacy Toby Keith, and your spirit will live on in the hearts of your family and everyone that ever heard one of your songs. I know you're singing with the angels and entertaining in heaven. RIP brother ❤

The depth of emotion in that performance is incredible. I’ve always loved his singing, but this particular song done at that particular time, just incredible. The strength of character to do that when so obviously in pain takes the breath away. Never got to see him live, but we have a wealth of recordings to enjoy again and again. Hearing the news that Toby passed brought back memories and made me recall the feeling that I felt when I was a 6 yr old little girl at home missing her dad who was serving active duty overseas. A lot of days were tough on our family because we couldn’t hold communication with my dad. Postcards here and there were a blessing. One day mom got a call from Dad and he was proud to tell her that Toby Keith was out there giving the troops a performance. Toby, I thank you so much for going out of your way to be a great American. For giving men like my father a reason to make a happy phone call home during the worst of times. But ultimately, for teaching us to be proud and unapologetic patriots of America 🇺🇸 ❤️🤍💙 RIP

I grew up listening to Toby Keith and at one point me and my childhood best friend used to play Red Solo Cup nonstop, I remember us singing along to it in the woods when we used to explore as kids. It feels like a lifetime ago now, that song came out 12 years ago this year and while I may only be 22 it’s gonna be odd carrying on knowing there’s never gonna be any new Toby Keith songs because I’ve never known life without. 62 years is far too young, cancer robbed us of one of country’s greatest and one of the last few country music singers that kept it old school. He said he was not afraid after ending his chemotherapy. He has a strong relationship with the Lord who rode shotgun with him for a while. RIP Toby - you will be missed, but we will have you forever in your music and talent you left us with.

My husband passed in June last year. I played this song for him many times as he grew weaker. I will miss Toby Keith, but I picture him in heaven with many other talented men and women, gathered together and performing in heaven. Rest in peace Toby Keith. You will not be forgotten.

I don't know what was more moving to me Toby's singing goodbye to us or his beautiful wife watching the love of her life saying goodbye. She quietly wiped tears as he sang. Now this is a real love story. ❤️

This hits me different today as I watch this again. I have been sick for 6 days and am weak. I can't imagine how weak he was standing there on stage, strumming his guitar, and standing there singing. My emotions are more vulnerable today. He was such a strong man to be able to sing. I'm sure the song has a different meaning for him, than what it was originally written for. :(

I grew up with Toby’s music, and have been a fan pretty much since I was born. That was around when he started getting super popular. He’s always been a big part of my music taste, so all of this hurts 😭😭😭 but I’m glad he doesn’t have to be in pain anymore. I’m sure he’s having concerts all the time in heaven with the other greats up there. ❤

As a Retired Marine I loved this man for everything he did for us Veterans. As a man in his 50s fighting cancer now... there are no words to express how I truly feel at his loss. This song and a few other of his have all been anthems of sorts for me at different points in my life. This song and this performance is one that carries meaning and helps me keep fighting.
My husband was a Marine for 16 years. In April he will be 65. It was four years ago last August that he was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer. I watched my husband go from 220 pounds to 125. He endured both chemo and radiation. He had to have all his teeth removed. He was on a feeding tube for two years. He also became septic. All of his care was through the VA hospital in Dallas. This past December marked two years that he's been cancer-free. I am whole-heartedly praying for you. I know first hand the amazing power of prayer. My husband is my miracle THREE times. May God be with you as you go through this trial. Much love to you, and thank you for your service.

I cry every time I watch this performance. I cry for the strong man who admits he is weathered and worn, and for the people who are fighting cancer.
I cry because I didn't know if I'd ever see Toby perform again- and here he is with the best performance I have even seen him do.
It was truly a beautiful moment. I love that Toby is center stage and his faithful crew stands behind him in the shadows. Always behind him, supporting him.

I saw Toby Keith live while on active duty in the early 2000s. He sang "courtesy of the red white and blue" and he brought down the house.....seeing like like this brought a tear to this old soldiers eye. RIP "Big Daddy". You fought well, sir.
